Abstract The white dwarf (WD) mass and age distributions hold clues to the star formation history of our Galaxy and the age of the disk. To extract this information we need to carefully calibrate the WD mass-radius relation and the WD cooling curve. But to do so, we must directly determine the masses for a variety of WDs of different sub- types. The only direct method is through the orbital analysis of resolved WDs in non - interacting binary systems. Sadly, this has been done, with varying quality, for only 4 WDs (40 Eri B, Sirius B, Procyon B, and Stien 2051B), mainly because it is extremely difficult to resolve WDs in binary systems with periods less than ~50 years. We propose a high angular resolution Snapshot survey with FGS1r to observe cool WDs with the objective of discovering (resolving) double degenerate systems with modest separations and periods as short as 25 years, ideal binaries for follow up mass determinations. By carefully selecting our targets, about 10 such systems should be revealed. This will dramatically increase the number of WDs available for dynamical mass measurements (its 2 for 1.), enabling a better calibration the WD mass-radius relation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9169( 11) - 11/07/01 14:42 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We considered using WFPC2 for this proposal but decided that it would be unwise to forfeit the detection of systems with angular separations less than ~70 mas. And since the Villanova Catalog contains a large number of cool WDs brighter than V=16 (and observable with FGS1r), WFPC2's faint object sensitivity is not needed. Therefore, FGS1r is the instrument of choice. We note that our targets are all too faint for ground based efforts such as speckle interferometry, adaptive optics, and long baseline interferometers, hence the need for HST., We will observe the targets with FGS1r in its high angular resolution Transfer Mode. Each object will be scanned in a single 1 orbit visit approximately 40 times to achieve the necessary S/N. The objects will be inspected for binarity by comparing the observed interferograms to those from point sources in the FGS calibration reference library. Standard software packages available at STScI will be used for the analysis. Given that the potential binary components should be of nearly equal temperature, the magnitude differences will always be small (<~2, even is they have a large mass difference), an ideal situation for discovering new DD systems with the FGS.
