Abstract HD 209458b is the only extrasolar giant planet (EGP) detected that has an orbit inclined enough toward the Sun for the transits to be detected. Differential photometry of HD 209458 with respect to comparison stars showed a transit depth of 1.5\ a transit time of 3.2 hours. Transit ingress and egress are ~25 minutes in duration suggesting the planet transits along a short chord instead of the full stellar disk. We propose to observe the transit ingress (1-orbit) and egress (1- orbit) with a Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) used as a high- speed photometer (40 Hz). An FGS can be used to obtain relative photometry with better than milli-mag accuracy and one-minute time resolution. FGS photometry of the ingress and egress will allow an independent determination of the planet radius and the inclination of the orbit. We also propose to observe the ingress and egress at least five times during Cycle 10 (10 orbits requested) to determine any variability of transit times that would indicate precession of the orbit caused by secondary bodies in the HD 209458 system. As a secondary goal, we will search for structure in the photometry that would indicate the presence of planetary satellites. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9171( 35) - 08/16/02 10:33 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe HD 209458 with FGS1 in Position (POS) Mode using the F550W filter. We will devote one orbit for each ingress and egress. The ingress observations will start approximately 5-10 minutes before the start of the transit (T_C-(110-115) min), and the observations of the egress will end approximately 5-10 minutes after the end of the transit (T_C+(110-115) min). T_C is the time at mid transit. We have discussed our program with the FGS Instrument Scientist Dr. Ed Nelan. We estimate that for FGS1 we will obtain ~24, 000 cts/25 ms read with the F550W filter using POS mode to observe HD 209458 (sp.type=G0, V=7.65, B-V=0.594). Count Rate = 20901.2 * f-fact * 10^-0.4 * (V-13) = 954, 990.859 cts/sec = 23, 874.77 cts/25 ms noindentwhere f-fact (F550W) = 0.331 for B-V=+0.60. We will achieve 0.1\ Fractional uncertainty = sqrtN/N = 0.0010 or 0.1\ noindent The Fine Guidance Sensors (FGSs) The Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) photomultipliers (PMTs) are end-illuminated 13 stage venetian blind dynode S-20 photon-counting detectors. There are four PMTs per FGS. In Position (POS) Mode, the data stream carries the counts for the four PMTs. The PMTs are read out every 25 ms (40 Hz), and the counts are placed into a sum register. The register has a limit of 2^16 (65, 535) counts. The individual PMT counts are stored in the engineering telemetry. The sum of the PMT counts is used internally by the fine guidance electronics (FGE) to determine a star's presence. The total counts are compared to the expected counts for a star. This register determines the bright limit. HD 209458 (mv=7.65) is too bright to observe directly with the F583W photometric filter due to the limit of the sum register. Therefore, we need to observe with the F550W or F5ND filter, a 5-mag neutral density filter. The F5ND filter will yield ~720 cts/25 ms read. The photometric accuracy is a trade off between the time resolution and the number of counts because the data can be binned to any time interval. Our accuracy (Deltam) would be 7 milli-mag for a 25 ms read and 1 milli- mag for a 1 second time interval. Real Time Justification ----------------------- The FGS observations are time-critical. They need to be scheduled during HST orbits that contain the full ingress, or egress, of the transit within the target visibility time (~53 min). The length of an ingress, or egress, is ~25 minutes. The orbital period of HD 209458b is 3.5247736 days (Castellano et al. 2000), and the time at the center of the transit T_C = 2451659.93675 +/- 0.0001 HJD (Brown et al. 2001). We will update the transit ephemeris for the Cycle 10 observations. The full length of the transit is 3.2 hours, or about 2.18 HST orbits. If possible, we would like to observe the ingress and egress of the same transit event, or the transit egress followed by the next ingress. We plan to observe five transits, ingress/egress pairs, over Cycle 10 to meet our science goals. The observation pairs should be separated by about ~60 days. One team member, Gregory Henry, has observed the transit with the the automatic photoelectric telescope (APT) at the Fairborn Observatory in Southern Arizona (Henry et al. 2000). If possible, we would like coordinated observations of the transit with the APT and HST. The APT site is shut down during the summer rainy season from about July 4th to early to mid September. Observations before July 4th or after mid-September would be desirable.
