Abstract The distance to the LMC and the Cepheid P-L law form the backbone of the Cosmic Distance Scale and the determination of H_degrees. Unfortunately, in spite of concerted efforts of many investigators, the zero point of the Cepheid P-L law and the LMC distance remain controversial and uncertain to ~10-15 our ongoing program of using eclipsing binaries (EBs) as ``standard candles'' (Guinan et al. 1998; Fitzpatrick et al. 2000) to include two recently discovered LMC eclipsing binaries (EBs) with Cepheid components. HST/STIS observations of these extraordinary systems hold the key to determining simultaneously the Cepheid P-L zero point and the LMC distance, and provide a direct test of the Baade-Wesselink parallax method. The proposed targets are a 17th mag LMC EB with P_orb~800 d, which contains a classical Cepheid with P=2.03 d, and a 14.5 mag LMC EB with P_orb=397.25 d with a 4.97 d Cepheid. HST/STIS low-dispersion spectroscopy will be used to determine T_eff, [Fe/H], and A_lambda. HST/STIS medium-resolution observations yield accurate radial velocities of these double-line systems which, when combined with the light curves and temperatures, yield the stellar radii and luminosities, and distances. These EBs offer the unprecedented opportunity to minimize the dependence of the Cosmic Distance Scale and H_degrees on zero point uncertainties. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9176( 6) - 03/20/02 09:24 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Low-Dispersion (120-900 nm) Spectrophotometry. We wish to obtain complete low resolution spectral coverage, from 120 to 900 nm, of these two targets. The proposed spectral coverage is similar to that used in our previous HST LMC EB programs, and our Cycle 9 STIS LMC EB program. This will require the use of four different grating/detector combinations: G140L (STIS/FUV), G230L (STIS/NUV), G430L (STIS/CCD), and G750L (STIS/CCD). As discussed by Fitzpatrick & Massa (1999) the extended wavelength coverage uniquely disentangles the stellar from the interstellar parameters, yielding the quantities: T_eff, log g, [Fe/H], E(B-V), A_lambda, necessary for the goals of the project. Using the online STIS exposure calculator for the brighter target (SC21 40876, MACHO 6.6454.5), we calculate exposure times of 25-30 min (for the G140L and G230L gratings) and 5-10 min for the remaining two gratings. The exposures will require 2 consecutive HST orbits to complete. These exposure times result in a S/N typically exceeding 30:1 per resolution element. At this S/N the spectrophotometry will have sufficient quality for the determination of the stellar parameters and reddening. The timing of the visits is important, since we wish to observe the binaries outside of eclipses (phase 0.2-0.3 or 0.7-0.8). Moreover, one set of low resolution spectra (covering 120-900 nm) will be taken near the Cepheid's maximum effective temperature, and another near minimum effective temperature. These measures are important in characterizing the changes in the physical properties of the Cepheid (T_eff, R, L) over its pulsational period. For the fainter target (SC16 119952) we calculate exposure times of 40-50 min (for the G140L and G230L gratings) and 20-30 min for the remaining two gratings. The exposures will require 3 consecutive HST orbits to complete. These exposure times result in a S/N typically exceeding 20:1 per resolution element. Although the S/N is lower for this target, the observations will be binned during the analysis and the accuracy will be sufficient for determining the desired parameters. Phase coverage requirements for this target are the same as described above. Medium-Dispersion Radial Velocity Study We intend to observe the targets using STIS in the G430M (STIS/CCD) and G750M (STIS/CCD) modes, centered at 450 nm, 520 nm, and 850 nm, respectively. This setup provides sufficient spectral resolution for measuring radial velocities of the individual stars in each binary (using cross-correlation or disentangling techniques) to a precision of ~3-5 km/s. These spectral regions, rich in stellar absorption features, have been selected to enable the clear separation of the spectral features of the hot and cool components of each EB. The Cepheid components of each target have estimated spectral types ranging from F2 I-II to G0 I-II. The spectra of F-type stars are rich in metal lines, permitting robust radial velocity measurements via cross-correlation and disentangling analysis. In SC21 40876, the Cepheid is the cooler component, while in SC16 119952, the hotter component is likely to be the Cepheid. The average visibility for these targets is 59 minutes per orbit. For the brighter target, a visit consists of one HST orbit (32 minutes of on-target science time after subtracting various overheads), during which time two 14 and 18 minute exposures will be taken with the G430M and the G750M setups, respectively. These spectra will have a S/N of ~40:1 per resolution element. The timing of the visits is important, since we wish to observe the target at specific phases outside the eclipses. More frequent observations will be taken near the orbital quadratures where the maximum radial velocity separation occurs. We also plan to determine the radial velocity variations of the Cepheid component arising from its 4.97-day pulsations. Near the orbital quadratures, the orbital radial velocity curve is flat, minimizing the effect of its orbital motion on the determination of the Cepheid's pulsations. For galactic Cepheids with similar characteristics, we expect radial velocity variations of ~30 km/s. These observations are being secured for two reasons. First, we will directly test the Baade-Wesselink method as discussed previously. Second, we must remove the Cepheid's pulsational velocity signature from the system's orbital motion, to derive the Keplerian orbit. Fortunately, the ephemeris and pulsational period of this Cepheid are known to high precision from three years of OGLE and MACHO photometry. Additional MACHO photometry of the system will be obtained during the proposed HST observations. For the fainter target, a visit consists of one HST orbit, during which time one 38 minute exposure will be taken with the G430M (HST/CCD) setup. The spectrum will have a S/N of ~25:1 per resolution element. The timing of the visits is important, as noted above, and we expect radial velocity variations of the Cepheid component to be ~15 km/s with a 2.03 day period. Additional MACHO photometry of the system will be obtained during the proposed HST observations. Real Time Justification ----------------------- SC21 40876 has an orbital period of ~397 days. Based on the available ephemeris, quadrature (phase 0.25) occurs in late August 2001 while the opposite quadrature (phase 0.75) occurs late March 2002 (at the quadratures the binary's orbital motion is minimum and the radial velocity separation of the two components is greatest). This phasing is well- suited for observations with HST. During the first quadrature (Aug 2001) we will execute the low-dispersion portion of the program (spectrophotometry of the EB with the Cepheid at maximum and minimum light). The observing plan for the second object, SC16 119952, is similar in terms of scientific requirements and phasing but because of the longer period, two HST Cycles are required to adequately sample the radial velocity curve. The first quadrature occurs early November 2001 based on our ephemeris and the 800 day orbital period. This time is ideally suited for HST observations and we plan to execute the low-dispersion spectrophotometry and the medium-dispersion radial velocity study of the Cepheid.
