Abstract Gamma-ray burst astronomy is a field maturing at a phenomenal rate. Only three years after the discovery of fading long- wavelength counterparts, we now have distance measurements for dozens of events, we have developed a detailed theoretical framework for understanding the X-ray -- radio afterglow lightcurves, and observational evidence now ties the progenitors of long GRBs (those studied to-date) to the collapse of massive stars. While progress has been rapid, three important new observational and theoretical discoveries, formulated over the last twelve months, allow us to address new and in many cases more sophisticated questions than could have been posed a year ago. These developments: the discovery of X-ray lines in GRB 991216; the observation that N_H as deduced from X-ray afterglow are one to two orders of magnitude larger than the dust extinction inferred from optical afterglow; and the growing realization that the afterglow emission may exhibit features of dust echoes, appear to offer unexpected and new diagnostics that will directly inform us about the progenitor, the circum-progenitor material and the immediate interstellar environs. These motivate us to propose an aggressive program for cycle 10. As one of the most actively evolving areas in astronomy today, we anticipate the contributions of HST to be part of the foundations of this new and important field. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9180( 30) - 07/15/02 10:31 - [ 3] Observations Description ------------------------ To carry out the ambitious program described above, we request a total of 4 standard TOO observations. The scientific payoff for these observations is high, the rapid response being required to ensure the return. We describe the proposed observations below. \medskip centerline Standard TOO Observations par WFPC2 - Search for the Underlying Supernovae and Dust Echoes: Our goal is to obtain photometry of 5\ accuracy in each of three filters (F814W, F606W, F450W) near the secondary SN peak in the light curve for any burst that begins to show a leveling off in ground-based photometry. The peak of the possible SN needs to be well sampled to allow to distinguish a SN from a dust echo and to correct for it to discern a possible dust echo. Late time sampling (several months) is also required (see below). The ground-based program will be reviewed by co-I Holtzman, so that transformations from these filters to standard ground- based sets will not be a limiting factor in the linking of ground-based and HST photometry. Modeling these expected light curves after SN1998bw, the secondary peak is expected to occur at about day 24 for an event at z = 1. At that redshift, the peak R magnitude is 25.2. Using the Exposure Time Calculator for the WF, and the three filter magnitudes listed in Table 1, we calculate that it is possible to get S/N = 20 at z = 1 in all three filters during a five-orbit visit. Since we want to obtain the same set of measurements approximately 8 days before the expected peak, on the peak, and 8 days after the peak, we will adopt the following plan: If after one week the light curve as measured from the ground asymptotes toward R=25 or brighter, and if z <=q 1, we will invoke a TOO in which the first visit will begin one week later, and two more visits will be scheduled to span the expected peak over the subsequent 2--3 weeks. Thus, these will constitute standard TOOs with a lead time of one week and an orbit allocation of 15 orbits. We will plan for two TOOs of this type (total of 30 orbits). noindent STIS UV Imaging - Determining the amount of Dust: To obtain the UV measurements required in order to (combined with ground-based optical/IR and X-ray hydrogen column measurements) determine the effects of dust and dust destruction, we will plan STIS NUV MAMA observations with the F25QTZ filter (to reduce geocoronal lines) in the same TOO observations described above. We plan 2 orbits (4800 s total exposure) for each of 2 TOOs to reach an unreddened equivalent V magnitude (assuming a power law with Beta = 0.7) of 25 with S/N of 10. UV Spectrum of a Bright Burst -- Probing the GRB Environment: For a burst which is determined to have V < 20 and 0.4 < z < 1.4 within the first 24 hours, low Galactic extinction, and canonical slow decay, we will request a TOO to take place within the next 2--3 days. This will be a PRISM observation with the STIS NUV MAMA and 0..^ 2 slit, which is a regular supported mode. A standard point-source acquisition will work at this time, as we will determine that the OT is indeed the brightest point in the 5^ * 5^ STIS CCD acquisition image. The chosen redshift range is the one in which either or both of the molecular hydrogen breaks at 1300 Angstrom and 1650 Angstrom\ will fall in the region of the PRISM where the throughput is within a factor of 2 of maximum. A UV spectrum will also allow to study the effects of dust and dust destruction. For faint continuum sources, the PRISM is the most sensitive UV spectral mode. Resolution at these wavelengths is in the range 20-40 Angstrom, which is well matched to the expected features. Assuming a canonical spectral index Beta = 0.7 and temporal decay index Alpha = 3Beta/2, we calculate the signal to noise that would be obtained in 200 minutes of exposure, which is typical for a five-orbit observation after accounting for all overheads. Slit throughput and dark count are taken into account, and the PRISM throughput is conservatively estimated at the half- maximum points. For V = 21, \ S/N = 21, for V = 22, \ S/N = 10. Either of these could be less if there is significant extinction (but that is the quantity we are trying to determine). We plan for two standard TOOs of this type (total of 10 orbits). \medskip centerline Non- 9180( 30) - 07/15/02 10:31 - [ 4] TOO Observations WFPC2 - Late-time Measurements: Long after the TOO Observations of each SN and/or dust echo candidate, we wish to make additional three-filter WFPC2 observations for several purposes: 1) to search for the expected late-time exponential decay of the supernova which is now presumably powered by radioactive nickel or find that a possible scattering echo dominates the emission (the SN can be distinguished from a scattering echo by its rapid rise and decay compared to the echo). 2) to obtain clean images of the underlying galaxy for image subtraction as a step in the precision photometry of the earlier-observed OT, and 3) to study structures such as star-forming regions in the host galaxy and to determine the precise position of the OT with respect to those structures. Although these observations are ``triggered'' by the previous TOOs, they are not charged against the TOO quota for HST because they will begin more than six weeks after the TOO. Since SN 1998bw settled into an exponential decline only after t_ peak + 30 days, we would begin this set typically at t_ peak + 60 days at z = 1. Ideally, we would like to have the two sets of observations spaced at a two-month interval, therefore, 10 orbits for each GRB (total of 20 orbits). In addition we request one epoch of deep WFPC2 imaging around 450 days after the event of the three SN and/or dust echo candidates that we will have followed up with HST in A09. These may detect the fall off of the dust echo, but if no echo is present provide clean images of the underlying galaxy for image subtraction and for studies of structures such as, e.g., star-forming regions in the host galaxy at the position of the OT. This amounts to 5 orbits for each GRB (total of 15 orbits). par WFPC2 - Nearby hosts and imaging of dark GRB hosts: For the nearby hosts our goal is to first determine the precise localization the GRB and then study the environment immediate to the GRB site. We have already determined the location of GRB 990705 (Bloom et al. 2001) to an astrometric accuracy comparable to the resolution of a drizzled WF image (~ 75 mas). After determining a low-redshift (z < 0.5) of a future burst or after finding a large spatially extented host (> 3"), we will image the field ~ 2 months after the bursts with F606W for 2 orbits. The signal--to--noise expected for a typical afterglow, will be ~ 10-- 30, sufficient to use this early image to accurately place the GRB on later images of the field. The late-time images of the nearby hosts will consist of imaging in each of three filters (F814W, F606W, F450W). The goal is to compare the photometry of the region with standard starburst models to constrain starburst age and dust content. In addition to the 2 orbits required for astrometry, we are requesting 10 orbits per GRB to image the environment of GRB 990705 and one future low-redshift GRB (22 orbits in total). For the two dark bursts, we must rely (by definition) on accurate localizations from either the radio or X-ray afterglow. With our pulsar work, we have demonstrated a technique to astrometrically tie VLA radio positions to HST imaging to an accuracy of 100 mas. This localization is more than sufficient to determine the GRB location relative to dust lanes. A dust lane will be distinguished by its red color in F606W - G814W relative to the globally bluer host. We are requesting 6 orbits per GRB to image the host in two filters for a total of 12 orbits. STIS - Imaging Short-Burst Hosts: In the event that an OT is discovered for a short burst or in case no OT is found to deep optical limits but the localization uncertainty requires only a single HST pointing we request deep STIS imaging. For maximum sensitivity, we will make STIS CCD Clear observations of 5 orbits/field. This will cost 10 orbits in total. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Requested and Supporting Chandra Observations. Co- ordinated multi-Lambda observations are key to GRB astronomy, and this group is in an excellent position with respect to coordination with ground-based efforts. X-ray observations, particularly spectroscopy and measurement of flux at late times 9180( 30) - 07/15/02 10:31 - [ 5] (10-30 days) when combined with HST observations also provide unique and critical information. We have devised a strategy that allows us to obtain such coordinated observations despite the stringent limitations of Chandra TOO opportunities in the HST AO-10 competition. noindent Coordinated X-ray Observations. We request one Chandra TOO observation, to be taken at similar epoch to the HST TOO 1. This valuable TOO will be used for observation of a bright afterglow event for which we will obtain a wealth of observations -- HST/UV, ground/optical and Chandra. The goal of the Chandra observations is to diagnose circumburst (via X-ray spectroscopy) and interstellar material (N_H) and to correlate these with extinction measures. The 50 ksec CXO spectral measurement, using HETG must be rapid -- within 3 days of the GRB. This will be followed by one 50 ksec ACIS-S exposure occuring 14 - 21 days afterwards. However, one Chandra TOO is not enough. To this end, we have an agreement within the group to use at least two Chandra TOOs granted to co-I Ricker (who has a total of 4 TOOs under the Chandra Cycle-2 GO+GTO program) between the Chandra AO-2/HST AO-10 overlap period: July 1, 2001 and November 1, 2001. Co-I Ricker plans to request GTO TOO slots in Chandra Cycle-3, and we will also propose for GO observations in the same cycle (November 1, 2001 through October 31, 2002). Finally, during the Galactic Bulge seasons (May-August) HETE-2 will engage in ``head nodding'' maneuvers to avoid false triggering due to Sco X-1 and as a result GRBs identified by HETE-2 will be accessible to BeppoSAX. Co-I Piro, Project Scientist for BeppoSAX and our Italian colleagues, expect to mount a vigorous followup campaign with SAX. Furthermore, co-I Hurley and Piro have a TOO program of following up IPN localized bursts with SAX. They have agreed to use at least two of their allocated slots to observe those bursts that HST will observe. The SAX observations will be undertaken between 1-5 days of the burst. Because our HST observations also critically depend on triggers from other satellites, and on ground based OT locations and measurements, we summarize the availability of the necessary resources below: Space- based satellites: BeppoSAX, RXTE, IPN &\ HETE-2. In the past, BeppoSAX and RXTE X-ray observatories provided accurate GRB positions at a rate of ~ 12 per year with accurate GRB positions (~ 3^prime-10^ radius). After a long hiatus, BeppoSAX has now resumed full operation and will return back to this rate starting September, 2001. Co-I Piro has requested funding to continue operation of BeppoSAX through March, 2002. The IPN (presently Ulysses+NEAR+SAX and starting April 2001 will include Mars Surveyor Orbiter as a replacement for NEAR) has been streamlined and is now producing one rapidly determined (10-50 hrs), moderately precise (10-500 square arcminutes) GRB error box per week. The increasing availability of large format optical/IR detectors and our VLA program (see below) is making it increasingly attractive to follow up on IPN bursts. IPN bursts because of their brightness will continue to be important even in the HETE-2 era. The launch of HETE-2 will afford many more localizations with very high accuracy 2^''- 10^'' (Soft X-ray Camera; SXC) and good accuracy 4^'-10^' (Wide X-ray Monitor; WXM), at an expected rate of about 16 and 50 per year, respectively. Though the launch of HETE-2 appears eminent, previous setbacks lead us to consider the possibility that it will not be operational during AO10. In this case, short bursts will not be localized, the rate of accurate localizations will be substantially lower than expected, and the delay of localization positions will be hours rather than minutes. As such we will not implement our express TOOs on the short-bursts (10 orbits). In addition, we will likely not be able to implement the second low- redshift host observation (12 orbits). The other components of our program will be, however, relatively unaffected since the rates and timescales of IPN and BeppoSAX localizations (see above) are sufficient. \medskip noindent Keck and Palomar. Our team has access to Keck telescopes and they have identified GRB astronomy as their number one program. This includes a TOO program in effect at Keck (Caltech PI: Galama, UC PI: Hurley), and highest priority on service observations taken during engineering time. We have access to the Palomar Hale 9180( 30) - 07/15/02 10:31 - [ 6] 200-inch (P200), the 60-inch (P60), the 48-inch Oschin Schmidt (P48) and the 18-inch Schmidt (P18). In addition to our own collaboration, we have in place agreements with other users of these facilities. noindent Las Campanas, Mt. Stromlo, MDM, HET and Magellan. Co-Is P. McCarthy of OCIW will continue directing the use of the Las Campanas facilities (2.5-m du Pont and 1.0-m Swope). The 50-inch Mt. Stromlo equipped with the dual band large format MACHO camera telescope has now been fully automated to respond to GRB localizations. We also have TOO programs at the Siding Springs (spectroscopy, 2.3-m; 40-inch telescopes to observe in non-MACHO bands). We will seek AAT observations when appropriate. MDM has a dedicated GRB program (PI, Halpern). The recently commissioned mosaic CCD imager has a field-of- view of 24^ on the 2.4-m telescope and almost twice that on the 1.3-m telescope. We expect to have an IR imager with 4^ FOV by Fall, 2001. We have a GRB program at the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET; Wheeler, PI) and this has already shown results (GRB 991216, 000301C, 990216). The 2.7-m Harlan J. Smith telescope is particularly useful and unique for blue spectroscopy (down to 3200 nm; this was demonstrated for GRB 000301c). noindent VLA, ATCA, OVRO and IRAM. The Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), on which we have an approved TOO program, is a southern equivalent of the VLA, giving critical access to the Southern sky. Our ATCA collaborators are all on-site at the ATCA enabling us to get onto the telescope as early as possible. NRAO has allocated to us 1 hour per day (as a result of peer review process) at the VLA (including explicit TOO time) for GRBs from July, 2000 through January 2002. The Owens Valley Radio Interferometer and the 30-m IRAM telescope give us access to the important mm and sub-mm band. We have a target of opportunity proposal at the OVRO to respond to all well-localized GRB. We have a program (in collaboration with K. Menten of MPIfR) of sub- millimeter observations with the MPIfR MAMBO camera.
