Abstract Our goal is to dynamically measure the masses of low mass pre-main sequence stars. This is important because there are still no such objects with an accurately measured mass. In cycle 5 we began to map the orbits of young multiple star systems in Taurus using FGS3. In cycle 8 we switched to the more capable FGS1r. We propose to continue to observe these binary and triple systems so that we can establish their visual orbits. In addition to our Transfer mode observations, we include Position mode observations of reference field stars so that the position of the multiple systems' barycenter can be located, giving the relative masses of the components. In addition, the Position mode data will allow us to determine accurate parallaxes for these systems, and hence the physical, absolute masses of the young pre-main sequence stars along with absolute magnitudes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9229( 27) - 05/08/03 07:03 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our program uses the FGS1r operating in both Transfer and Position mode. We will use the F583W filter. The multiple star systems are expected to have orbital periods of a few years so we request two observations per year, near times of maximum parallax factors but with concerns about the system position angle accomodated (so as to not cause a projected angular separation along a given FGS interferometric axis to be too small). The binary or triple systems are observed in Transfer Mode to obtain high angular resolution measurements of the component separation, position angle, and relative brightness (of the individual stars). The science target is also to be measured in Position mode along with other nearby reference stars that are simulataneously present in the FGS FOV. These measurements will yield the parallax and proper motion of the science object, as well as locate the system's barycenter, which in turn will ultimately yield the mass of each star in the binary or triple system.
