Abstract XZ Tauri, HL Tauri, and HH 30 are three young stars which can be observed simultaneously in a single WFPC2 pointing. Broad-band HST imaging has revealed that the XZ Tauri binary is the source of an elongated bubble of emission nebulosity nearly 5" long. In new images of these objects obtained in March 1998, we discovered that the XZ Tau bubble had expanded significantly and had become markedly limb- brightened since 1995. This behavior suggests that we are witnessing, for the first time, the earliest stages of development of a Herbig-Haro bowshock, perhaps the initial formation of its post-shock cooling zone. We propose to test this hypothesis with emission line imaging and temporal monitoring of the bubble's size and brightness. Simultaneously with the XZ Tau study, we will observe the jets and reflection nebulosities of HH 30 and HL Tauri. Monitoring of HH 30 is particularly important, as our 1998 imaging also revealed that a very large reflected light asymmetry has developed in this prototype young stellar object accretion disk system. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9236( 3) - 05/31/01 09:55 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Imaging of the XZ Tau - HH 30 region over three consecutive observing cycles in planned, spaced annually with the same position and orientation as used for the previous observations (XZ Tau and HL Tau on the PC, HH 30 in the corner of WF2, LkHa 358 on WF3). Our strategy is Cycle 10 is to use two visits: One with three orbits is focused on XZ Tauri, and a second single-orbit visit to expand the temporal monitoring baseline for HH 30. The XZ Tauri visit employs long (2000s) and short (12-180s) exposures in each of three filters. The short exposures are used to determine the positions and brightnesses of the stars, which are saturated in the longer exposures. The first orbit consists of F656N exposures for Ha imaging. The second orbit is in F673N ([S II]). The third orbit is in F675W for deep imaging of the XZ Tau bubble, jet proper motion measurements in HH 30, and HH 30 disk and HL Tau nebula variability analysis. The second visit is aimed at HH 30 only, which will be imaged on the PC in F675W, F555W, and F814W. The narrowband images will also allow us to view the XZ Tau bubble closer to the binary than before, because the nebula-to-star contrast ratio will be much higher. If we assume that all of the emission seen in our previous R-band images is due to Ha, then we would expect 12-20 DN per pixel in F656N. This is the Cycle 10 version to obtain the last data point.
