Abstract Photoionized, warm absorbing gas is an important component of the nuclear structure of AGN. About half of all low-z AGN show X-ray warm absorbers and high-ionization UV absorption lines, but the relationship of the X-ray absorber to the UV-absorbing gas is not clear. Only a handful of high-spectral-resolution observations with Chandra, HST, or FUSE currently exist (NGC4151, NGC3516, NGC3783, NGC5548, Mrk 509). These show a diversity of kinematic structure and sample of low-redshift AGN studied at high spectral resolution in the X-ray and the UV by obtaining simultaneous HST, Chandra, and Fuse spectra of Mrk 279. Our HETGS spectra will also probe the origin of narrow Fe Kalpha emission in Seyfert 1s. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9275( 3) - 09/05/01 10:00 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain medium-resolution far-UV echelle spectra of Mrk 279 using the STIS FUV-MAMA, grating E140M, and the 0.2X0.2 aperture. Mrk 279 has a mean continuum flux at 1450 A of 5e-14 erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}~A^{-1}. Historical IUE and HST observations show UV flux variability at the tens of percent level. A 5- orbit visit nominally allows ~13, 000 s for science. Using the STIS on-line ETC, this exposure would yield a S/N per resolution element of 7-8 in the Ly alpha+N V region, and similar results in the C IV region. The absorption features of interest have FWHM of 30-60 km/s (Crenshaw et al. 1999), so we can bin the echelle data up to 25 km/s (a factor of 4 for a resolving power of 45, 000), resolve the features of interest, and achieve a S/N per bin of ~15 in the continuum. Such results would be comparable to the GHRS observation of NGC 5548 reported by Mathur et al. (1999), and superior to the STIS/E140M observation of Crenshaw & Kraemer (1999). Real Time Justification ----------------------- We propose to coordinate our HST observations with FUSE and with Chandra. If this proposal is successful, the FUSE observations will be proposed for NRA 3, which covers observations starting in December 2001 and overlaps the HST Cycle 10 observing windows for Mrk 279. The FUSE spectra would cover the 912-1187 Angstrom range, including the O vi and LyBeta absorption lines. The Chandra observations are proposed here, and these Chandra Cycle 3 observations also overlap the FUSE NRA 3 and HST Cycle 10 observing windows for Mrk 279.
