Abstract Our Cycle 1 observation of 47Tuc has shown its promise as the ultimate laboratory for study of the production and evolution of compact binaries and compact objects in globular clusters. We propose a deep (4x75ksec) ACIS-S observation to measure the complete populations of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) and cataclysmic variables (CVs) by their variability and spectra and to constrain the main sequence binary population. Coordinated HST (ACS) data would provide unique identifications of CVs and many MSPs and allow the full population of quiescent low mass X-ray binaries to be distinguised from CVs. This dataset would provide fundamental constraints for the origins of neutron stars, millisecond pulsars, magnetic white dwarfs and compact binaries in globular clusters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9281( 3) - 04/17/02 10:29 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ TIMING CONSTRAINTS and SCHEDULING: These ACS observations are part of a joint HST/Chandra observations, with the HST/ACS observations to be performed simultaneously with 3 of 4 separate Chandra observations. Two of the 4 Chandra observations (each 75 ks) are to be obtained contiguously, the 3rd ~3 days after the beginning of the first and the 4th about 10 days after the beginning of the first. The HST observations should be simultaneous with Chandra observations 1, 3 and 4. Currently Chandra observations 1, 2 and 3 are tentatively in the long-term schedule for the week of 30 Sep 2002 - 7 Oct 2002, and observation 4 is scheduled for the week of 7 Oct 2002 to 14 Oct 2002. This Chandra scheduling therefore constrains the timing of the HST observations. Firmer details about the Chandra scheduling will be given to STScI as soon as they become available. ORIENT CONSTRAINT: The orient constraint combined with our slightly off center pointing allows several known Chandra sources lying near the edge of the ACS field of view to be optimally included in our field. Given the above timing constraints, this gives no extra constraint on our observation. FILTERS/EXPOSURES: Our observation uses a combination of F625W (~R), F658N (Halpha) and F435W (~B) exposures. Seven Halpha/R pairs and 3 B exposures are to be obtained per visit with the exception of the 3rd visit where the longer occultation time means having to drop one Halpha/R pair. The exposure times have been designed to give slightly greater depth in R than Halpha, and less depth in B. Saturation is avoided except for stars significantly brighter than the MSTO. DITHER PATTERN: The dither pattern is designed to fill up a 4-by-4 subpixel grid for the R and Halpha exposures. Fourteen different points are used in the first 2 visits and the remaining 2 points plus 4 repeated ones used in the 3rd visit. For each visit we select at least one (and not more than 2) grid points from each column and row of the 4- by-4 grid. This ensures a good quality image with useful subpixel dithering can be obtained for each visit, but because the dither pattern is different for each visit, the PSF for the final summed image should have even better quality than for the individual visits (even with uncertain pointing between visits). For B we fill up a 3-by-3 subpixel grid over the 3 visits. Real Time Justification ----------------------- This is a joint Chandra/HST observation, for simultaneous observing, as stated in the Phase I proposal.
