Abstract The X-ray nova XTE J1118+480 has minimal interstellar extinction and therefore represents an outstanding opportunity for multiwavelength studies. In outburst we conducted a comprehensive study of this object that was extremely rewarding. Now we propose an analogous campaign to observe the quiescent state using Chandra, HST, and the MMT. Our objectives are to 1) assemble the best possible optical to X-ray spectrum of a quiescent black hole, 2) constrain the radius of the inner edge of the accretion disk, 3) determine if the UV/optical emission is due to the accretion disk or to an advection-dominated flow, 4) acquire key data on the extreme faintness of black holes relative to neutron stars, and 5) test models proposed to explain the faintness of quiescent black holes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9282( 4) - 12/05/01 09:47 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We plan 5 orbits of near-uv followed by 5 orbits of far-uv spectroscopy of this object. The near-uv spectroscopy is using the STIS/MAMA-NUV detector with the G230L grating, the far-uv is using the STIS/MAMA-FUV detector and the G140L grating. We expect to accumulate about 7, 000 counts in the FUV and about 40, 000 counts in the NUV over the 5 orbits. We choose the time-tag mode because the object showed large amplitude 10 second oscillations during outburst. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- The timing constraints for these observations are complex and severe Tucson) and during the new moon, in order to allow us to carry out simultaneous ground based observations. The moon requirements have been specified with 4 'BETWEEN' constraints, and the two different gratings (in two visits) tied together in time with a 'GROUP WITHIN'. Target visibility limitations knocked out two of the dark moon windows, leaving two windows of 6 days each as possible scheduling intervals. In addition, we require the observations to be simultaneous with Chandra. We expect that both the night-time and Chandra constraints will be sorted out approximately 1 month before the obserations occur. If the specified BETWEENs do not give enough flexibility to actually schedule the observations, there is a fifth (and sixth) between which could be attempted. We include these here (rather than in the requirements) because it will result in significant loss of our science, but some data is better than none These intervals are BETWEEN 09-MAY-2002 AND 15-MAY-2002 and BETWEEN 07-JUN -2002 AND 13-JUN-2002, the second of which gives us the least opportunity for simultaneous ground based observing. In addition, we note that we have requested the VISIT 2 observation to occur within 48 hours of visit 1. Ideally we would like them 24 hours later, but include the extra day in order to allow some flexibility in HST scheduling. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9282( 4) - 12/05/01 09:47 - [ 3] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 XTEJ1118+480 EXT-STAR RA=11H 18M 10.85S +/- .02S, J2000 V = 18.8 DEC=48D 2' 12.9" +/- 0.2" B = 19.4 E(B-V) = 0.013 Coordinate Source: OTHER_SOURCE Comments: position is from Uemura 2000, apparently measured off DSS, but within 0.2" of the USNO-A2 catalog position for this star.
