Abstract The visible consequences of the hard shock of the impact of SN 1987A's ejecta upon the inner circumstellar ring are apparent and developing rapidly. Over the past year, this phenomenon has made a transition, from emission originating in just a few "hot spots" at restricted locations in position angle (PA) around the ER, to a collision producing optical emission over a nearly continuous distribution (with few breaks larger than 45 degrees in PA) and indications of low-level emission arising from nearly all PAs. We propose a modest but effective program to trace superbly the development of the entire interaction region by drawing on capabilities of STIS which are well-matched to the task, and on the strength of comparison with existing STIS data. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9328( 4) - 05/17/02 11:20 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe the complete SN1987A equatorial ring (ER) and all newly- discovered hot spots with STIS with the 52X2 slit through the G750M/6581 grating (Visit 1) and also the G750L/7751 and G430L/4300 gratings (Visit 2), and also perform F28X50LP broadband imaging. During each visit we will perform an on-board acquisition of the offset star S2 (of Walker & Suntzeff 1990), then an offset to center the ER within the aperture. A short F28X50LP image will be taken during each visit for use as a spatial intensity map, to record the telescope pointing, and to search for the appearance of new hot spots. We will obtain the 52X2 spectra through each grating by dithering along the slit at two positions offset +/-0.9 arcseconds from the center of the equatorial ring. This pointing strategy splits the ER into two halves, provding maximum spectral resolution of the high velocity hot spots and of the ER in closely-spaced emission lines. In order to exactly match the orientation of p re vious visits (GO 7123, GO/DD 8806 and GO/DD 8872) and facilitate sensitive difference imaging, the slit position angle needs to be matched as closely as possible to 86.51 degrees [ ORIENT = 131.55D ] for Visit 1 and to 87.21 degrees [ ORIENT = 132.25 ] for Visit 2. A PA as close to 86.51 degrees E of N [ i.e. ORIENT = 131.55] is MOST STRONGLY DESIRED.
