Abstract The very massive, unstable, persistently enigmatic star Eta Carinae has implications for several branches of astrophysics. Despite a series of remarkable discoveries in previous HST data, the nature of the central object remains elusive. Fortunately, recent developments offer, for the first time, an approach that can settle a number of long-standing questions which have been obstacles to understanding this unique object. A 5.5-year spectroscopic and X-ray cycle is now well established. STIS provides the most promising and very likely the only way to test whether Eta Car is a 5.5-year binary system. If it is, STIS gives by far the best constraints on the companion star, orbit, etc., needed to assess mechanisms for past outbursts and ejecta. If binary models don't work, then the 5.5-yr effect is probably a thermal cycle which gives novel information about the star's structure. In addition to the periodicity, the unprecedented brightening found with STIS in 1999 has continued at a diminished rate and merits followup observations. We sense that these recently discovered effects offer a likely breakthrough if Eta Car can be observed repeatedly with STIS through the current 5.5-year period, 1998.0--2003.5. During HST Cycle 10 the pace is expected to increase as this object enters the phase preceding its next major ``event.'' ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9337( 5) - 04/15/02 10:05 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The current spectroscopic cycle of Eta Car began with its previous ``event'' about 1997.9 and will continue to the next one about 2003.5. We have minimal STIS data for 1998.0 and 1998.9, and good data for 1998.2, 1999.1, and 2000.2. Shorter intervals will be highly desirable after 2002.0 as the rate of change is expected to increase. This is especially true for the orbital-velocity question. Some of the motivations and considerations of our present plan first became evident when the 1998--99 STIS data were reduced. HST Cycles 10 and 11 are important because they represent a phase in the 5.5-year period leading up to the next major spectroscopic event, reliably predicted to occur near 2003.5. This proposal is mainly a request for Cycle 10 HST time. However, we frankly fear the possibility of HST schedule slippage, which, in a worst-case scenario, could prevent normal allocation of the orbits needed for late 2002 and early 2003, the most critical time. Therefore we also request Cycle 11 orbits, simply to avoid the danger that schedule slippage or similar factors might cause none to be allocated then -- which would be a scientific disaster, because the observations planned for 2002--2003 would have to wait until 2008-2010, at the end of the planned HST activities. No suitable instrument is likely to be available after the demise of STIS. A heritage proposal has been accepted (9420 & following) for additional orbits in Cycle 11 through 13 to carry across the minimum. This proposal will provide observations to bridge between 9083 in Cycle 9 and 9420 late in Cycle 11 and extending across the minimum projected to be 2003.5 . We know from experience how many orbits are required for a good set of observations of this target; in fact we have developed techiques to make the process unusually efficient. In a single orbit we can cover only 3 to 6 wavelength intervals with the medium resolution gratings. Eta Car has hundreds of useful spectral features across the whole CCD wavelength range; a wide sample of these is needed for modeling. The star's behavior is still so unpredictable that critical effects can happen in almost any of the STIS grating-tilt wavelength samples. With 3 CVZ orbits, complete STIS/CCD coverage is possible on one object, with full wavelength calibrations, etc; because we wish to obtain spectra of both the Central Source and Weigelt D, five orbits are required to gain full spectral coverage of both positions. We add two CVZ orbits for a single visit to obtain STIS/MAMA/FUV, 1250--1700 Angstrom with echelle E140M and STIS/MAMA/NUV with echelle E230M centered at 1978A. We choose the echelles both because of increased spectral resolution and because we can cover most of the UV range in one visit. Because of bright-object limits and the brightness of the central source, plus Fe II nebular emission at 2507 and 2509A, we are unable to use the longwave E230M setting. So far one observation of this type (1175-1700A) has been obtained in March 2000. Another was done in Cycle 10 which included the 1978A setting. In summary, we will use 5orbits for STIS/CCD observations plus 2 orbits for STIS/FUV and NUV in Cycle 11. CVZ time is necessary to accomplish full coverage and monitoring of Eta Carinae. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We intend to observe Eta Carinae in mid-2002 when the ORIENT angle duplicates a similar angle to that which will be used in the Treasury proposal, 9420, and following proposals for cycles 12 and 13. We have been monitoring the central source (A) and Weigelt blobs B and D. However, the boost servicing mission 3B and RPS2 visibilities will greatly affect these plans. We anticipate a revised submission once the new orbit parameters of HST are known. We plan full coverage of Eta Carinae from 1180A to 10300A in about the same time frame as the predicted spectroscopic minimum. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Visit 1 and 2 are to be coordinated in the same CVZ opportunity in mid- 2002 for monitoring purposes and to get a complete wavelength coverage from 1150A to 10100A. A FUSE visit is planned in the same time frame. Both visits are planned for July 2002 using 7 CVZ orbits.
