Abstract Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) provide the only direct evidence for an accelerating universe, an extraordinary result that needs a rigorous test. The case for cosmic acceleration rests on the observation that SNe Ia at z ~ 0.5 are ~ 0.25 mag fainter than they would be in a universe without acceleration. A powerful and straightforward way to assess the reliability of the SN Ia measurement and the conceptual framework of its interpretation is to look for cosmic deceleration at z >= 1. This would be a clear signature of a mixed dark-matter and dark-energy universe. Systematic errors in the SN Ia result attributed to grey dust or cosmic evolution of the SN Ia peak luminosity would not show this change of sign. We have demonstrated proof of this concept with a single SN Ia, SN 1997ff at z = 1.7, found and followed by HST. The results suggest an early epoch of deceleration, but this is too important a conclusion to rest on just one object. Here we propose to use HST for observations of six SNe Ia in the range 1.2 <= z <= 1.6, that will be discovered as a byproduct from proposed Treasury programs for high-latitude ACS surveys. Six objects will provide a much firmer foundation for a conclusion that touches on important questions of fundamental physics. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9352( 58) - 02/19/04 07:03 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We are planning to observe 6 newly discovered supernova found from the GOODs program (Proposal XXXX). This proposal contains the requested observations for each supernova. The goals of the program are to obtain a number of observations with ACS/WFC F850LP which will provide the restframe U -band light curve, and to obtain NICMOS observations for color measurements. There are more visits in this phase II then will be used We are planning on following 2 supernova from each redshift bin: z = 1.1 - 1.3 z = 1.3 - 1.5 z > ~1.5 The visit sequences are further divided into 2 groups based on if the supernova has a visible host galaxy. (some supernova may come from low surface brightness galaxies and @ z=1.2 one will not see anything of the host. we call these no host supernovae. ) z=1.2 Both host and no-host sequences are 13 orbits. There are 2 sets of visits for each choice in case both targets have the same host type. Total 26 orbits. z=1.4 There are 2 idential sequences 27 orbits each. total 54 z=1.6 There are 2 idential sequences 27 orbits each. total 54 outstanding questions: a) we used Avail_Ok: YES, to sanitize the snytax errors that RPS2 creates. We are planning on using various ACS/RAMP filters and the current version of RPS2 doesn't allow the GO to use them. b) On visits using the F892N filter for more than 1 orbit, we can't use the same exposure time as other ACS filters. see visit: E2 and F2 Adam: you need to explain the changes from phase I. a) narrow band filters Real Time Justification ----------------------- We have gained valuable experience working with STScI, developing techniques so most of the proposed observations will generally not require target-of- opportunity, but instead can be prescheduled into the HST SMS loads due to the ability to anticipate the timing and approximate position of SNe found in Treasury surveys. However, given the relatively small size of the proposed Treasury fields, some of the smaller fields may not yield a target SN while the larger fields may yield more than one. To provide the needed flexibility (especially without knowledge of what Treasury surveys will be approved) we are requesting TOO status. We are not requesting the ultra-rapid 24 hour turnaround. Experience shows our slower response TOOs cause little disruption to the HST schedule.
