Proposal For 3. Cycle GO 11 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Investigators Contact? PI: Erich Karkoschka University of Arizona CoI: Dr. Martin Tomasko University of Arizona N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Abstract We propose to image Saturn near its solstice with the same 22 WFPC2/NICMOS filters which we imaged Saturn near its equinox about six years ago. Additionally, we propose to use the ACS/HRC with its high ultraviolet throughput and its superior spatial resolution. All filters span a wavelength range of a factor of 10, they cover methane band strengths over several orders of magnitude, and they include the center and wings of the hydrogen dipole absorption near 2000 nm. Thus, they probe many atmospheric levels over five scale heights. The 22 WFPC2/NICMOS filters have proven to provide an excellent probe of Saturn's vertical aerosol structure. The spatial resolution yields several hundred resolution elements in latitude which can be grouped into 10-15 distinct zones. The best viewing of Saturn high southern latitudes occurs at its winter solstice which happens during Cycle 11. The three spacecraft which have visited Saturn flew by near Saturn's equinox, and Cassini will miss the solstice too. HST acquired comprehensive data of Saturn near its last equinox in 1995. The proposed observations will expand this data set to Saturn's solstice and thus provide a unique record of its seasonal variation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9354( 11) - 11/19/03 09:34 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to image Saturn at its solstice with the same 22 WFPC2/NICMOS filters which we images Saturn near its equinox (GO 6030 and 7823). This will record seasonal changes and give the best viewing geometries for high southern latitudes. We add exposures with the ACS/HRC in order to improve ultraviolet exposure levels and spatial resolution. Exposure times for most WFPC2 and NICMOS filters have proven to give signal-to-noise ratios near 100 or more, and the same is expected for most ACS filters. We now describe each orbit, one orbit for each camera. With the ACS/HRC, we expose each of eight filters twice, shifted by 4.5 pixels vertically and horizontally in order to achieve the highest spatial resolution and to recover possible bad pixels. For each filter, one exposure is somewhat longer than the other one. The longer exposures gives better signal-to-noise ratio, while the shorter one smears longitudinal features less considering Saturn's rotation. One filter (F330W) is used a third time to image the rings. The proposed ACS filters are ultraviolet filters with higher exposure levels than similar WFPC2 filters (F220W, F250W, and F330W) and other filters at longer wavelengths with better spatial resolution than WFPC2 although less spectral sampling. Following is the list of proposed ACS/HRC filters with exposure times in seconds and HST time including overhead in minutes: F220W (240 and 120, 9.0), F250W (180 and 100, 7.7), F330W (100 and 60 and 120, 8.7), F435W (15 and 10, 3.4), F502N (60 and 40, 4.7), F550M (9 and 6, 3.3), F658N (50 and 35, 4.4), F892N (100 and 60, 5.7). Adding 6 minutes for acquisition and 2 minutes for the small offsets gives a total of 54 minutes HST time, which is the available time per orbit. The WFPC2 filters are the same as used in our GO 6030. Exposure times are similar except for FQCH4N-D (893 nm) in order to avoid saturation for the brighter rings. Each filter is exposed once on PC1, except FQCH4N-C (728 nm) which is only available on WF4 and imaged twice with 4.5 pixel offset in both axes in order to partially recover the poorer sampling interval of WF4 with respect to PC1. Following is the list of proposed filters with exposure times in seconds and HST time including overhead in minutes: PC1: F255W (160, 5), F336W (80, 4), F410M (40, 3), F467M (16, 3), F588N (14, 3), FQCH4N-B-620 (23, 4), F673N (14, 3), FQCH4N-D-893 (160, 6), F953N (100, 4), WF4: FQCH4N-C-728 (8 and 6, 11). Adding 6 minutes for acquisition, 1 minute for CCD change, and 1 minute for small offsets gives a total of 53 minutes HST time. The NICMOS orbit is an exact copy of our 1-orbit GO 7823 with NICMOS, except that exposures in filter F113N are extended by 16 seconds due to the slightly longer available time per orbit. Images in this filter benefit most by lengthening exposure times. The three filters of NIC1 are used four times each to mosaic the full disk of Saturn. The nine filters of NIC2 are used twice each with slight offsets. Although Saturn can just fit into NIC2 at certain times during the year, we use two exposures in order to make sure to include each limb and to record data at the location of the coronographic hole in the other exposure. For most locations on the disk, the second exposure gives additional spatial sampling through dithering. Following is the list of proposed filters with exposure times in seconds and HST time including overhead in minutes: NIC1: F095N (4x48, 4.8), F108N (4x48, 4.8), F113N (4x128, 10.3). NIC2: F165M (2x8, 1.0), F171M (2x64, 3.0), F180M (2x48, 2.4), F187W (2x16, 1.4), F190N (2x48, 2.4), F204M (2x32, 1.8), F212N (2x128, 5.0), F215N (2x96, 4.0), F237M (2x64, 3.0). Adding 6 minutes for acquisition and 3 minutes for detector change and small offsets within each detector gives a total of 53 minutes HST time. The changed operating temperature of NICMOS has 9354( 11) - 11/19/03 09:34 - [ 3] no significant effect for our exposure times, aside from an improved quantum efficiency and thus slightly improved signal-to-noise ratio. In case ACS and/or NICMOS will not be available during Cycle 11, the other proposed observations are independently valuable and still should be carried out. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Although the observations can be taken anytime within about 18 months of Saturn's solstice (October, 2002), there are three parameters which influence the scientific return. First, in several filters, the rings are brighter than the planet. Since the ratio of ring brightness to disk brightness varies strongly with phase angle, observations at the highest phase angle from Earth cause a decrease of scattering of ring light onto the disk. Second, the visible shadow of Saturn onto its rings creates a black space between the disk and rings and thus decreases scattering of light from the rings onto the disk, primarly near the south polar region. Third, the sub-Earth latitude varies somewhat during Cycle 11. The higher sub-Earth latitudes give better scattering geometries for high southern latitudes. All three parameters are optimal in March, 2003. Therefore, we request to schedule our observations during March, 2003, perferably near mid-March. In case such scheduling is impossible, February and April, 2003 are preferred. These are requests and not requirements. Because of Saturn's variability, the data set should be taken within about one rotation of Saturn.
