Abstract The spectacular structures seen in HST images of planetary nebulae (PNe) are generally accepted as originating from hydrodynamical interactions between stellar winds: the interacting-stellar wind model (ISW). Traditionally, the shaping is thought to occur after the star becomes hot enough to ionize the PN. But recent HST images indicate that the shaping may occur earlier, and the newer GISW model puts the shaping during the pre-planetary nebula evolution. The relative importance of both models is not known: GISW shaping will account for some fraction of PNe, but estimates range from 15--100\ during the PN phase, especially for the youngest PNe. We here propose an HST SNAPshot survey of compact PNe in the Galactic Bulge, to test these predictions. The Bulge provides the only PNe population for which progenitor masses are known and nebular ages can be measured. In support of these HST measurements we have already measured velocity fields and emission line fluxes. The survey will give an unbiassed sampling of morphologies, and allow evolutionary sequences to be determined to test the ISW versus the GISW model. By-products of the survey will be the determination of nebular masses, diameters and filling factors. We will also obtain the White Dwarf mass distribution in the Bulge, and the initial- final mass function for low-mass stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9356( 3) - 06/14/02 11:46 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ In this SNAPshot survey, we include 60 compact PN located in the Galactic Bulge. The usual Bulge PN selection criteria are: (i) within a radius of 15^degrees of the Galactic Center (2200pc for an assumed distance of 8.5kpc to the Galactic Bulge); (ii) a diameter less than 10''; (iii) radio flux less than 100 mJy (or equivalent HBeta flux). These criteria lead to a confusion rate with Galactic disk PNe of 15\ objects with low radial velocity. There are 260 planetary nebulae listed in the ESO-Strasbourg Catalog (Acker et al. 1992) which satisfy these criteria. Newly discovered Bulge PN from van de Steene & Pottasch (1993, 1995) and Beaulieu et al. (1999) bring the total to 354 PN. 60 objects with diameters of less than 5 arcsec will be observed with HST. For larger objects, ground-based observations are being obtained, but for objects less than 4 arcsec it is not possible to separate star and nebula in such data, and morphological data is compromised. Existing NTT observations confirm this. The exposure times are short since the surface brightness is high. For a limiting signal-to-noise of 3 per pixel, the corresponding surface brightness is 2* 10^-14 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 arcsec^-2 for a 5 minute exposure at HAlpha with the PC. We will take an OIII exposure, HAlpha and a continuum filter close to OIII (F547M). The advantage of imaging at HAlpha over HBeta is that the line is >3 times stronger and even larger in the presence of extinction, and the WFPC2 QE is larger at 6560 than 4860Angstrom. For example, the target listed in the Observation Summary has an HBeta flux of 6.0* 10^-15 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 but is unresolved; the assumed diameter is 1.0''. The HAlpha/HBeta ratio is 13.1 (high extinction) resulting in a surface brightness of 1.0 * 10^-13 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 arcsec^-2 at HAlpha. Using the WFPC2 extended object ETC, a signal-to-noise ratio of 9 per PC pixel at HAlpha is calculated. The OIII flux is similar to HAlpha and the same exposure time is used. For the broader F547M filter, a 3- minute exposure is sufficient. Two 5-minute exposures and 1 3-minute exposure, plus 3, minute readout per exposure, requires 22 minutes. Acquisition (6 min.) and 1 -minute WFPC overhead per orbit bring the total to 29 minutes per SNAP. This time is ideally suited for the SNAPshot program (User Information Report UIR-2001-01, Fig. 1). The PC is chosen for its better spatial resolution. (The ACS cannot be used because its filters are not well suited for these emission lines.) The area coverage of 35 arcsec is ideal. The exposures will not be CR- split. The cosmic rays on the images can be filtered, because of the small pixel scale, but can also be removed by filtering the ratio images of the different filters. With the full sample, we can achieve sqrtN or 13\ on the frequency per morphological type. We stress that this will be the only such statistics for a uniform sample of PN with known progenitors mass and age. SNAPshot surveys normally achieve 50\ 18\ elliptical, round, bipolar. The census of rarer morphological types will be dominated by the sample statistics.
