Abstract Accretion inflows and outflows are fundamental phenomena in a wide variety of astrophysical environments, such as Young Stellar Objects, galactic binaries, and AGN. Observationally, cataclysmic variables (CVs) are particularly well suited for the study of accretion processes. We propose to carry out a STIS UV spectroscopic snapshot survey of CVs that fully exploits the diagnostic potential of these objects for our understanding of accretion physics. This survey will provide an homogenous database of accretion disc and wind outflow spectra covering a wide range of mass transfer rates and binary inclinations. We will analyse these spectra with state-of- the-art accretion disc model spectra (SYNDISK), testing our current knowledge of the accretion disc structure, and, thereby, providing new insight into the so far not well understood process of viscous dissipation. We will use our parameterised wind model PYTHON for the analysis of the radiation driven accretion disc wind spectra, assessing the fundamental question whether the mass loss rate correlates with the disc luminosity. In addition, our survey data will identify a number of systems in which the white dwarf significantly contributes to the UV flux, permitting an analysis of the impact of mass accretion on the evolution of these compact stars. This survey will at least double, if not triple, the number of high-quality accretion disc / wind outflow / accreting white dwarf spectra, and we waive our proprietary rights to permit a timely use of this database. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9357( 9) - 03/03/03 12:03 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Visit structure: The planned observations are straightforward: each snapshot consists of a guide star acquisition (~6 min), a target acquisition (~6 min), and a G140L science exposure (~15 min on-target + ~8 min overhead), resulting in a total duration of 35 min. We will use the 52"*0.5" slit as a compromise between throughput and resolution. Slitless spectroscopy would save the time of the target acquisition, but deteriorate the wavelength calibration, which is essential for the purpose of our proposal. The observing summary (p.2) lists a few sample observations, the full target list is given in the appendix. Expected S/N: We have used the STIS exposure time calculator (ETC) to estimate the S/N that can be achieved in a 15 min exposure: (i) Systems in which the WD dominates the UV emission, e.g. in polars and in VY Scl stars during low states or in dwarf novae in quiescence: The typical contribution of the WD to the V magnitude in these systems is ~50\ spectra as input data for the ETC. In a CV at our cut- off magnitude of V=17.5, a 15 000 K (20 000 K) WD with \Mwd=0.6 M(sun)\ has a 1400 Angstrom\ flux of 3times10^-15$ (6times10^-15) \ecsa. A 15 min STIS/G140L spectrum will have a S/N=10 (15) at 1400 Angstrom. The cut-off magnitude corresponds to a distance limit of 225 pc (290 pc) for a 15 000 K (20 000 K) WD. (ii) Disc-dominated systems, i.e. novalike variables and dwarf novae in outburst: The V- magnitudes of these systems and their UV fluxes are well correlated. We use, therefore, FOS/G130H and IUE spectra of VW Hyi obtained during superoutburst (V~8.5, Fmbox 1280AA~2*10^-11 \ecsa) as input for the ETC and scaled the UV fluxes according to V. For V=12.5, 15, 17.5 disc-dominated CVs, 15 min STIS/G140L spectra will have S/N ratios of >100, 50, 15 at 1280 Angstrom. The number of targets in this snapshot program: We have selected a list of 149 CVs that are well studied at optical (and/or other wavelengths) and bright enough to yield good S/N data. This choice of objects (Appendix A) guarantees that all our scientific goals can be addressed by observational data. The target stars are well distributed over the entire sky, facilitating an efficient scheduling of the individual snapshots. We are aware that there is no guarantee that all targets will/can be observed during a Cycle 11 snapshot program. textitCovering 20\ lower limit to the snapshot completion will textbfdouble both the number of well-observed accretion disc / wind outflow systems and of exposed accreting white dwarfs -- obtained so far throughout 10 Cycles of HST observations -- and will clearly provide a much improved statistical database for the analysis of accretion disc / wind outflow / white dwarf physics. A somewhat more optimistic completion factor of 40\ outstanding breakthrough in this research field. Bright object limits (BOL): Using available IUE and HST spectra as input for the ETC, we have checked that the selected targets do not exceed the STIS/MAMA BOL for 1st-order spectroscopy. The results are summarised for the individual CV subtypes: (i) Polars: AM Her, the brightest polar, yields global and local count rates which are a factor 4 and 10 lower than the limit, respectively. All other AM Her stars are at least a factor 3 fainter at UV wavelengths. Hence, for this class of objects there is no concern with regard to the BOL. (ii) Disc dominated systems; novalike variables and dwarf novae during outburst: based on the more than 3200 available IUE spectra for all non-magnetic CVs and on the long-term optical light curves, we have screened our target list for systems which exceed the BOL. The resulting CVs were removed from the target list, except for a few dwarf novae with very long (~ yrs) and predictable recurrence times between their outbursts. Continuous monitoring by AAVSO and VSNET allows us to predict the outburst in advance of the scheduling.
