Abstract We propose to observe the newly discovered r-process-element enhanced star, CS 31082-001 (Fe/H ~ -2.9), in order to determine abundances of the heaviest stable elements, using absorption lines that are only reachable in the near UV. This star is the only halo star for which a uranium detection has been reported, and for which the U/Th chronometer has been used to specify an age limit. In order to improve the accuracy of the age determination from U/Th we require abundance estimates of the daughter nuclides --Pb & Bi-- for which only upper limits have been obtained from ground-based observations. Such estimates will provide crucial constraints on the initial production ratio of U/Th, resulting in a more strict lower limit on the age of this star's progenitor, hence on the age of the Universe. Measurements of 3rd- peak neutron-capture elements, such as Pt, Os, Ir, and Au, all with lines in the 2400-3100 Angstrom\ range, will expand our knowledge of element synthesis in the early Galaxy. Our recent ESO-VLT data indicate that the neutron-capture elements in this star exhibit different enhancements as compared with the previously known `` r- process star'' CS 22892-052, an apparent anomaly that must be resolved. CS 31082-001 is the ideal HST target in its class -- it is 4-times brighter than CS 22892-052, and less affected by molecular line blending. Consequently, these HST data will become the reference in all future studies of similar stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9359( 15) - 10/28/03 08:18 - [ 3] Observations Description ------------------------ Our target S/N is set to 50/1 at 2900 Angstrom, which we propose to obtain with 48 orbits of integration for CS 31082- 001. The exposure time estimate takes into account an expected total overhead of 24 min for the first orbit (guide star acquisition, target acquisition, peakup target acquisition, overheads -- 6 min for each) and 11 min for each subsequent orbit (re-acquisition time of 5 min + 6 min of overhead), and a visibility of 52 min per orbit. This results in a net exposure time, over 48 orbits, of 115620 sec. The expected S/N ratio has been obtained by comparison with the measured HST flux for HD 115444, a star with similar physical parameters to CS 31082-001 (T_ eff/logg/Fe/H = 4750/1.7/- 2.8). Adopting a flux for HD 115444 of 2.0 * 10^- 13 (2900 Angstrom), and reducing the expected flux for CS 31082-001 (V=11.7) by the V-magnitude difference with respect to HD 115444 (V= 8.9), we use the online STIS ETC to obtain the estimates for S/N (per two-pixel resolution element) listed in the table below. begintableh begincenter begintabularcc multicolumn2cSignal-To- Noise Predictions, Wavelength & S/N , (Angstrom\ ) & (Full/2/4) , 2900 & 50/70/100 , 2650 & 43/61/85 , 2450 & 17/24/34 , endtabular endcenter endtable Because CS 31082-001 is so bright, we expect to be able to obtain 40/1 <= S/N <= 50/1 at full STIS resolution, i.e., R= 30, 000 in the regions of greatest interest, without the necessity of rebinning. For completeness, we have shown the expected gain in S/N ratio for CS 31082-001 that would be obtained by carrying out a rebinning of a factor of 2 and 4, as might still be required for this star at the blue edge of the STIS wavelength coverage. Many absorption features of interest occur near the short-wavelength limit, and, owing to its large r-process overabundance and relative brightness, may become visible for the first time in CS 31082-001. To aid interpretation of our observations of CS 31082-001, we plan to use high-S/N observations of the bright metal-poor giant HD 122563, already carried out in Cycle 8 by Sneden et al. This star has similar physical parameters to CS 31082-001 (Teff/logg/Fe/H = 4600/1.2/-2.7), but has the advantage of being deficient in neutron-capture elements. Thus, lines of interest in CS 31082-001 are weak or absent in HD 122563, allowing determination of any atomic/molecular line contamination common to the spectra of both stars. Also note that the spectrum of CS 31082-001 will aid interpretion of the lower S/N spectrum of CS 22892-052, as the location of weak lines will be accurately obtained from the superior spectrum of CS 31082-001. The gradual degradation of the STIS CCD for spectroscopic observations (Sec. 4.5.1 of the STIS Primer) underscores the importance of obtaining a high quality HST spectrum of this unique star in Cycle 11, before the opportunity slips away. This was verified by running the online STIC ETC under the patently false assumption that this star is an O5 dwarf, rather than the K-I giant that it is. Even with this extreme case, no bright object alert was triggered, and fluxes were well within limits.
