Abstract We propose to carry out a NICMOS snapshot survey in the Paschen-alpha (PAlpha) emission line and H-band of the sample of galaxies being observed at 3.5 -- 160 microns as part of SIRTF Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) and a related guaranteed time survey of starburst galaxies. The PAlpha images, accessible only from HST, will be combined with groundbased HAlpha imaging to measure the extinction in the star- forming centers of these galaxies, and obtain robust, extinction- corrected maps of the massive star formation rate (SFR). The PAlpha data by themselves will provide reliable `extinction- free' SFRs, and a cross-calibration of the (dust--affected) HAlpha-- and UV--based SFRs. The PAlpha--based SFR measurements will extend the SFR- vs.-gas density law (Schmidt--law) to surface densities at least 30 times higher than what is accessible using HAlpha--based SFR measurements alone, bridging the gap between normal galaxies and IR--luminous starbursts. Furthermore, the combination of the HST PAlpha images with the SIRTF images and spectra, as well as ancillary ground --based UBVRIJHK images and GALEX UV images being obtained as part of the SINGS project, will provide a definitive study of the radiative transfer of starlight and dust heating in star--forming galaxies. The processed NICMOS images will be incorporated into the public SINGS Legacy Data Archive, to enable scores of follow- up studies by the astronomical community at large. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9360( 6) - 04/22/02 09:42 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ \medskip SNAP Sample Definition The foundation of our sample is the SIRTF Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) sample. The sample comprises 75 galaxies with a representative range of galaxy type, luminosity, and FIR/optical properties. The bandpasses of the two NICMOS PAlpha filters, F187N and F190N, cover the redshift ranges v<=sssim1500 km/s and 2900 km/s<=sssimv<=sssim4800 km/s, respectively. This limits the original sample to a total of 63 galaxies (a few representative examples are listed in Table 2). A search of the HST archive shows that 19 of these galaxies have been observed previously in PAlpha, though data for 5 of these are either mis-centered or of poor quality. Consequently our target list includes 49 SINGS galaxies. We have supplemented this list with 31 nearby starburst galaxies with similar redhisft characteristics and being observed with similar configurations on SIRTF as part of the guaranteed time observations of the MIPS and IRS instrument teams. These galaxies extend the range of the SINGS sample to higher star formation rates and lower metal abundances. One of the surprises of the ISO mission was the discovery of very dusty star forming regions even in extreme metal-poor starburst galaxies (Thuan et al 1999, Figure 2). In total we request observations of 80 SNAP targets. Assuming a typical fraction of 50\ archival PAlpha data for ~20 of the galaxies, we should have a sample of roughly 60 galaxy centers, which should be adequate for the scientific investigations outlined earlier. \medskip SNAP Priorities We will take advantage of the new prioritization option to assign high priority to galaxies with the highest likelihood of containing high- extinction HII regions in the NIC3 field. Low priority will be assigned to galaxies which are expected to have low SFRs (elliptical and S0 galaxies, objects undetected by IRAS and/or ISO). \medskip Observing Strategy \medskip Our snapshot observing strategy is closely based on the successful Institute program SNAP-7919, whose results are published in Boeker et al (1999). We will use the NIC3 camera to maximize the field size (51 * 51 arcsec) as spatial resolution is not critical for this application. Figure 3, taken from the Boeker et al (1999) paper, illustrates the typical field coverage and depth of the SNAP data. Each observation will consist of images taken in a narrowband filter centered on PAlpha (F187N or F190N, depending on redshift), a matching continuum exposure in the companion narrowband filter, and a short broadband exposure in H (F160W). Our previous experience (GTO-7218, 7219) shows that the extra time spent obtaining a narrowband exposure for the underlying continuum provides a much more reliable continuum subtraction and PAlpha photometry and better spatial PSF matching relative to using the F160W filter for continuum subtraction. This is especially important for regions with high obscuration and with large local variations in extinction. Each set of exposures will be made with a 4- position dither to maximize recovery of spatial information and rejection of cosmic rays and CR-persistence. From the images of Boeker et al. (1999), the typical PAlpha-line surface brightness of nearby galaxies is 7* 10^ -16 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 arcsec^-2 and the H-band continuum surface brightness is 5 * 10^-5 Jy arcsec^-2. The WWW NICMOS Exposure Time Calculator with default temperature and dark current parameters shows that 4 exposures of 192 seconds each in F187N and in F190N will achieve S/N=21 per resolution element for the line+continuum and S/N=8--9 for the continuum only (one resolution element is 0^prime .6*0^ .6, as we will bin the images in 3 pix*3 pix). This will typically result in continuum-subtracted images with S/N~7--8, perfectly adequate for our science goal. The F160W observations will consist of 4 integrations of 24 sec each, that will achieve S/N=18 per resolution element for our typical surface brightness. Overheads include guide star acquisition (6 minutes), instrument set-up (18 seconds), filter changes (16 seconds each), readout (4 seconds each), and dithering (~11 seconds each). These, added to our exposure times (192*4*2+24*4), imply that each SNAP observation will require 35.7 minutes. Our team includes members with expertise in interpreting visible and near-infrared emission-line observations of galaxies, and several individuals with experience in the planning, reduction, and analysis of NICMOS PAlpha observations. Calzetti was a member of the team that carried out the successful Institute SNAP program 7919, and M.\ Rieke and A.\ Alonso-Herrero carried out similar observations of starburst galaxies as part of the NICMOS GTO program (GTO- 7218, 7219). \medskip Need for HST Observations \medskip Most of the astrophysical applications in this project do not require the 0.2 arcsecond resolution of the HST + NICMOS images, though we will take full advantage of this capability in separating the often-crowded star forming regions in the centers of the starburst galaxies, and for placing limits on the spatial scales over which the nebular extinction varies significantly. The primary need for HST for this project is for accessibility of the extinction- sensitive Paschen-Alpha line at the surface brightnesses required to study the star formation and extinction in these galaxies. PAlpha is not accessible from the ground (it lies in a deep atmospheric absorption window), and surrogate features such as Brackett- Gamma and PBeta are inadequate substitutes. BrGamma is 5 times fainter than PAlpha and lies in the groundbased K-band window where thermal background makes the feature virtually undetectable outside of the brightest starburst and star- forming regions. PBeta (or the higher-order Paschen lines) are also much weaker than PAlpha, they provide a much shorter extinction baselines relative to HAlpha, and groundbased observations are hampered by the high airglow background.
