Abstract H_2 emission provides an excellent probe of the physical conditions in planetary nebulae (PNs) and also in proto- planetary nebulae (PPNs), objects in transition between the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and PN phases. It is thought that the shaping of the PN occurs when a fast wind interacts with the remnant of the AGB progenitor during the PPN phase. The study of shock-excited H_2 in PPNs will allow us to study this process. We request HST/NICMOS H_2 and complementary K and H broad- band images of 13 PPNs with a range of spectral types of the central star. We presently have very high- resolution (~100, 000) H_2 spectra for 7 of these, which we will use with the high-resolution images to study the velocity structure of the fast wind. We will also explore the relationship between the presence of H_2 and a bipolar shape for the nebula, as has been found in PNs. However, the role of the equatorial torus is expected to be different in these two cases, and in the PPNs it is expected to collimate the wind rather than shield the molecules. Thus the H_2 in the PPNs is expected at the ends of the lobes rather than in the torus. Radiatively- excited H_2 emission appears to be common in PPNs with central stars of B spectral types; this appears to be a transitional stage in the evolution of the H_2 in the nebula which these images will help us to better understand. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9366( 9) - 07/08/02 06:22 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to use the NICMOS Camera 2 with the narrow-band H_2 filter (F212N), the medium-band K filter (F222M), and the wide-band H filter (F160W) to obtain images of 13 PPNs. The K-band image will be used to subtract the continuum from the H_2 F212N image, as described below, and also to determine the morphology of the nebula. Eleven of these PPNs have been observed in ground-based spectra to have H_2 emission at 2.122 Mum and the other two are expected to have it based upon their known bipolar structure. The MULTIACCUM mode will be used, since it permits one to remove cosmic rays, repair any saturated pixels from the central star, and enhance the dynamic range. A 3-position dithering mode will be used. We have used the NICMOS ETC to compute on-source exposure times for each object based on the observed sizes, H_2 fluxes, and continuum flux densities (or observed K magnitudes if there is no K-band spectra). In cases where the objects do not have high-resolution (HST) imaging, we assumed a typical size of 2arcs0 * 2arcs0. In the H_2 images of IRAS 17150-3224 and the Egg Nebula, one sees that the bright emission comes not from the nebula in general, but from discrete clumps. It appears that the clumps cover an area of about 10\ We have included a somewhat more conservative filling factor of 5 in our calculations for the surface brightness for these smaller nebulae. Our time estimates presented below take into account the decrease in S/N as a result of continuum subtraction. Take as an example IRAS 20028+3910, which has a size of 2arcs1 * 0arcs7. It has an observed H_2 1-0 S(1) line flux of 2.2 * 10^-14 ergs s^-1 cm^-2. This corresponds to an H_2 brightness of 1.5 * 10^-14 ergs s^-1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2 if it were spread evenly over the nebula and 7.5 * 10^-14 ergs s^- 1cm^-2 arcsec^-2 if we correct for the filling factor of 5. The flux density of the continuum is 1.6 * 10^-15 ergs s^-1 cm^-2 AA^-1, which corresponds to a flux of 33.6 * 10^-14 ergs s^-1 cm^-2 within the 210 Angstrom- wide bandpass. This implies a brightness from the continuum of 11.2 * 10^-14 ergs s^-1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2 and a total brightness (continuum + line) of 18.7 * 10^-14 ergs s^-1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2. If we calculate the brightness per Angstrom, this value is 8.9 * 10^-16 ergs s^-1 cm^-2 AA^-1 arcsec^-2, or 2.2 * 10^-2Jy arcsec^-2. A S/N of 100 (200) is achieved in the F212N filter in 7 (28) min and in the F222M filter in 1 (4) min. Subtracting the scaled F222M image from the F212N image results in a S/N of 21 (41) for the resulting H_2 image. In 1 orbit with 40-45 min of source observing time, we can expect a S/N ~ 30 in our resultant H_2 image and ~200 in each of our K and H images. The detailed values for each object are summarized in Table 2. The other objects (except for IRAS 17441-2411 and 16594-4656) have observed H_2 1-0 S(1) line fluxes of 2.2-10.4 * 10^-14 ergs s^-1 cm^-2. Carrying out similar calculations for them results in a S/N of 100 (200) in the F212N filter in 5-31 (21-122) min and in the F222M filter in 1-4 (4-16) min. Subtracting the scaled F222M images from the F212N images results in S/N of 7-36 (13-73) for the resulting H_2 image. IRAS 17441- 2411 has a lower H_2 line flux of 0.5 * 10^-14 ergs s^-1 cm^-2. It is a known bipolar PPN (see Fig. 1), and the E-W orientation of the slit caused the very ends of the lobes to be missed; therefore the actual flux density and resulting S/N will likely be higher than that based on our spectral observation. Based upon the time available in one orbit per object, we expect to obtain a S/N of at least 15-50 in the continuum-subtracted H_2 images. The H-band (F160W) image of each will only take a few minutes per object. For 3 of these targets we already have F160W and F222M images; we will not repeat the F160W images but will repeat the F222M images due to the known light variability of PPNs. The continuum subtraction to isolate the H_2 emission from the scattered- light continuum in the F212N image involves more than simply taking the difference between two narrow-band observations. One must correct for the difference in band widths, detector response, spectral shape, and any included spectral lines (such as BrGamma, 2.166 Mum). We investigated this in our study of IRAS 17150-3224, for which we had HST NICMOS F212N, F215N, and F222M images along with a 2 Mum spectrum. Based upon the determined flux calibration and the observed spectrum shape, we determined that the F215N image should be scaled by 1.055 before subtraction from the F212N image. We also examined the use of the F222M for continuum subtraction. We found that with the use of our observed spectrum in this region, the medium-band F222M image could also successfully be used to subtract the continuum. These results are shown in Figure 3 (from Hrivnak et al. 2001b). In both H_2 images, the region near the star appears to be slightly oversubtracted (this could be corrected by a reduction in the scaling of ~3 resulting H_2 emission strength in the lobes is the same (<= 5\ Thus we find that we can economize the HST observing effort to avoid the need of a second orbit for each object by using the medium-band F222M filter rather than the narrow- band F215N filter to obtain the continuum. This requires the use of the 2 Mum spectrum, which we have for 10 of the 13 objects and which we plan to obtain for the other 3.
