Abstract Because of its importance in setting the distance scale, the time scale and in estimating cosmological parameters from the CMB, astronomy needs an estimate of the Hubble constant independent of the local distance scale and its systematic problems. This can be achieved using gravitational lenses with time delay measurements given enough constraints on the gravitational potential of the lens. We will use deep NICMOS observations of the lensed quasar host galaxies in 7 gravitational lenses with time delay measurements to obtain the necessary constraints, determine the dark matter distribution and estimate H_0. Analysis of the existing images and the well- developed theory for analyzing Einstein ring images of host galaxies suggest the new data will break the familiar degeneracies between lens mass distributions and the Hubble constant. We also request 30 ksec Chandra ACIS images for each of the 2 systems lacking them (B1608+656 and B1600+434) to measure the mass in nearby or surrounding groups and clusters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9375( 5) - 05/05/03 11:54 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The goal of these observations is to obtain deep, high precision images of the host galaxies of the time delay lenses. We will use the NIC2 camera and the F160W (H-band) filter. H-band is the best compromise between sensitivity and resolution (compared to J or K). In our previous NICMOS observations we found that the NIC2 camera produced superior results to the NIC1 camera because it had fewer artifacts and better dark current models. The marginal sampling of the PSF created few problems. In our analyses of NIC2/F160W images, we routinely achieved milliarcsecond astrometric precision (based on comparisons to VLBI images of the lenses). We will spend 5 orbits per target. An accurate, high signal-to-noise PSF model is essential to tracing the host galaxy near the quasars or in the direction perpendicular to the ring. Our previous analyses used the best PSF from a suite of empirical PSF stars (Tiny Tim PSF models were not as good as empirical PSFs). We could subtract the point sources at the level of a few percent of the peak, with prominent problems near the first Airy ring. Given the importance of the PSF model, most of one orbit (probably spread over the first and last orbit) will be invested in obtaining contemporaneous images of at least two stars for use as PSF models. These must have very high signal to noise compared to the brightest quasar images because we do not want to add noise to the images when we model and subtract the quasar images and the lens galaxy. The PSF stars should have similar IR colors to the quasars in order to obtain the best match to the core/Airy ring structure of the quasar images. Obtaining two stars, one at the start and one at the end, can partially compensate for temporal drifts and minimize the chance of finding that the single PSF star was in fact an unresolved double (as has happened.) We will spend 4 orbits on the target, obtaining 4 images at 4 dither positions in each orbit, for a total of 16 images (more for the targets in the CVZ). We will use the same exposure time for all lenses even though the host surface brightness covers a moderate range. The data for the faintest two hosts should be modestly better than those illustrated in the proposal, and the data for the bright hosts will be vastly superior. For the bright hosts we can use the radial structure of the Einstein rings to constrain the models as well as the tangential structure. In 4 orbits, the S/N per pixel is 13 (2) for an H-band surface brightness of Mu=20 (22) mag/arcsec^2. We do 50\ of the dark current bump. In the current images (1 orbit) we can trace the hosts down to Mu~eq 21 mag/arcsec^2 without smoothing the image. Even if we smooth the images, we are limited to Mu > 22 mag/arcsec^2 by the flatness of the images. In the new images we should reach at least Mu > 23 mag/arcsec^2 with modest smoothing partly from the improved photon noise and partly from the improved image flatness from stacking more independent dither positions. The observed hosts have peak surface brightnesses of 20--21 mag/arcsec^2 and the minimum surface brightness in the ring is 21--23 mag/arcsec^2. We should be able to measure complete ring curves in all 7 systems, and make detailed studies of the radial ring structure in at least 4 systems. The tools for reducing and modeling the images have already been developed. In particular, the nicred package for reducing NICMOS images, and the lensmodel package for modeling gravitational lenses including lensed host galaxies are available from the CASTLES WWW site (http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/castles/). Real Time Justification ----------------------- 9375( 5) - 05/05/03 11:54 - [ 3] We can obtain an extra 0.4 mag/arcsec^2 in surface brightness sensitivity for the two lenses in the CVZ by using the longer exposure times per orbit permitted by their location. The better our surface brightness sensitivity, the further we can trace the host structure in the radial direction. The first NICMOS exposure following an SAA passage is greatly degraded by cosmic ray persistence problems (see ISR NICMOS-98-001). Such images are useless for studying low surface brightness sources like the lensed host galaxies. The observations should be scheduled to avoid this problem. Published CXO images of two time delay systems, Q0957+561 (Chartas et al. 2001) and RXJ0911+0551 (Morgan et al. 2001), show that CXO can provide accurate positions and masses for the groups and clusters which can perturb the time delay lenses. While the host rings can measure these environmental effects, knowing their position and mass directly can greatly simplify the problem. Of the 7 delay lenses we consider, only B1608+656 and B1600+434 lack CXO images comparable to those obtained for Q0957+561 and RXJ0911+0551 (the others are unpublished, however). B1600+434 is part of a group/cluster and the environment of B1608+656 is unclear. We propose to observe both of these systems with 30 ksec ACIS-S images as were used for RXJ0911+0551. CXO easily separates emission from the quasar images and the extended group, and even 100 counts from the group/cluster are sufficient to roughly characterize its morphology, position, gas density profile and luminosity. For a 2 keV temperature this corresponds to a flux limit of 5times10^-15 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 and to luminosity limits of 5* 10^42 ergs/s for B1600+434 and 10^43 ergs/s for B 1608+656 (h=0.5). The detections in Q0957+561 and RXJ0911+0551 corresponded to 4* 10^42 ergs/s and 8times10^43 ergs/s. Hence the data should be able to characterize nearby, low mass clusters in some detail and to locate high mass groups. As a constraint on systematic errors in estimating H_0, even non-detections would be very valuable. Two co-Is have extensive experience using ACIS-S images of clusters.
