Abstract We propose a near-UV snapshot survey of 101 Seyfert galaxies using ACS/HRC and the filter F330W, a configuration which is optimal to detect faint star forming regions around their nuclei. These images will complement optical and near-IR images available in the HST archive, thus providing a panchromatic atlas of the inner regions of active galaxies, which we will use to study the starburst-AGN connection. The main goals of this proposal are: (1) Determine the frequency of circumnuclear starbursts in Seyferts, down to levels which cannot be observed from the ground; (2) characterize the observational (fluxes, colors, structure, sizes) and intrinsic (luminosities, masses, ages, global star-formation rate) properties of these clusters; (3) derive the luminosity functions of young star clusters around the nucleus of Seyferts and compare these results with those from normal and starburst galaxies to determine their survival rate close to the AGN; (4) address questions about the relation between AGNs and starbursts, like the possible connection between the masses and luminosities of black holes and starbursts, and the implications for the evolution of the black holes and their host galaxy bulges. By adding UV images to the existing optical and near-IR ones, this project will create an extremely valuable database for astronomers with a broad range of scientific interests, from the properties of the AGN to the properties of their host galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9379( 3) - 06/21/02 11:10 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Sample Selection - We selected our sample based on the data already available in the HST archive. We started with the 112 galaxies presented by Quillen et al. (2001), which corresponds to all Seyfert galaxies observed by HST with NICMOS cameras 1 or 2, using the filter F160W. For 101 of the 112 galaxies we were able to find WFPC2 broad-band observations centered around 6000Angstrom, most of which obtained with filter F606W (Malkan et al. 1998), but some obtained with the filters F555W or F547M, which also serve for our purposes. Our sample will consist of these 101 galaxies, 22 of which are classified as Seyfert 1, 1.2 or 1.5, 18 as Seyfert 1.8 or 1.9, and 61 as Seyfert 2. These galaxies have a large range of OIII luminosities, between 10^38-10^43 erg s^-1 (Quillen et al. 2001), which indicates a large range of nuclear luminosities (hence AGN power), assuming that the OIII and bolometric luminosities are correlated. Although this sample is obtained based on observations already available in the HST archive, which includes galaxies selected by different criteria, the total number of objects is large enough to allow us to define unbiased subsamples selected by various criteria, like OIII or infrared luminosity. Another alternative would be to separate the galaxies according to their membership to magnitude limited samples, which should be relatively free of selection effects. Some possibilities would be the CfA sample (Huchra & Burg 1992), or the extended Revised Shapley Ames sample defined by Maiolino & Rieke (1995). Our sample covers 65 per cent of the galaxies in these two samples. Also, the total number of galaxies is large enough for us to draw robust statistical results from this study. The median radial velocity of the galaxies in the sample is 2700 km s^-1, which gives a median distance of 36 Mpc, assuming H_0 = 75 km, s^-1 Mpc^-1. At this distance we will be able to achieve a spatial resolution of ~ 15 pc, of the order of the sizes of star clusters observed in starburst galaxies. Feasibility - Based on the information available in the HST manual and our previous experience with UV imaging of Seyfert 2's and starbursts, we decided that the best option is to use the high resolution camera on ACS and the filter F330W, which gives a resolution of 0.027 arcsec per pixel. Although we recognize that going farther into the ultraviolet region would have its advantages, due to the higher contrast between the younger and older stars, after careful consideration of the options we decided to use this configuration because it is the one with the highest throughput, has one of the smallest red leaks and minimal contamination by line emission. The fact that observations with ACS/HRC are not affected by bright object protection (like in the case of observations with the STIS MAMA's) is also important, since this allows us to observe Seyfert 1 galaxies and compare their circumnuclear star formation with that of Seyfert 2's. Furthermore, we showed above (Figure 2) that the combination of the information from the ACS/HRC F330W filter with the WFPC2 and NICMOS data available in the archive is suitable to estimate the ages of clusters from 3 up to 300 Myr and disentangle this information from the reddening effect. Since we are planning to detect star clusters on top of a galaxy bulge and disk, we used the ACS Exposure Time Calculator to estimate the detectability of point sources on top of a smooth background. We plan to observe each galaxy for 20 minutes, divided into 2 exposures of 10 minutes to allow the elimination of cosmic rays. Assuming that the background bulge light in Seyferts can be represented by the spectral energy distribution of elliptical galaxies, and assuming that they have a V surface brightness of 16.3 mag arcsec^-2, typical of the nuclear region of Seyfert galaxies (Malkan et al. 1998), we find that a star cluster with U=22 will be detected with a S/N=24, while a cluster with U=24.5 would be at the limit of detectability (S/N=3). Notice that for regions where the galaxy background is lower we will be able to detect point sources even fainter than that. Our observations are programmed to detect starforming regions much fainter than has been done in previous HST ultraviolet imaging of Seyfert galaxies, or ground based observations. The detection limits given above will allow us to observe clusters at least two magnitudes fainter than what was achieved in previous studies (Colina et al. 1997; Gonzalez Delgado et al. 1998) as a result of the higher throughput of our setup (ACS/HRC + F330W). Considering the detection limit U=24.5, this corresponds to V=25.7 for a 10 Myr cluster (F330W-F606W=-1.23) and V=24.7 for a 100 Myr cluster (F330W- F606W=- 0.23). This means that at the median distance of our galaxies (36 Mpc), without considering extinction, we will be able to detect 10 Myr clusters with absolute magnitudes M_V=- 7.1 and 100 Myr ones with M_V=-8.1, corresponding to masses of ~2*10^3M_sun and ~2*10^4M_sun, respectively. Another advantage of using ACS/HRC+F330W pointed out above is its small red leak, less than 0.1 per cent. Other setup's, like ACS/HRC+F220W, have a red leak of the order of 30 per cent for objects with colors typical of galaxy bulges. Using the filter F220W would result in higher background levels, lower S/N and significant photometric problems. One possible problem for our analysis is the contamination of the images by line emission. In the case of the filter F330W this effect is minimal, since the only strong emission line contributing to this filter is NeVLambda3426Angstrom. The average equivalent width of this line is 18Angstrom\ for the Seyfert 2's of Gonzalez Delgado et al. (2001), which will represent a contamination of ~5 per cent to the flux inside this band. In the case of the NICMOS F160W images, the contamination from line emission is minimal. However, it can be strong for the WFPC2 F606W images, since the wavelength range of this filter goes from 4800 to 7200Angstrom, including the emission of HBeta, OIII, HAlpha and NII. In the case this line emission is associated with the AGN Narrow Line Region, it will most likely not affect our analysis, because this emission is smoothly distributed over a region of hundreds of parsecs (Falcke et al. 1998, Ferruit et al. 2000) and will only increase the background level around the star clusters. In the case of young star clusters the line contamination will be due to the cluster itself, which has enough ionizing photons to produce strong emission lines. However, this contamination is significant only for clusters younger than ~6 Myr, where the HAlpha emission, the strongest emission line in these clusters, is expected to have an equivalent width larger than 100Angstrom. This contamination will generate a spread in the color-color plot shown in Figure 2 which is perpendicular to that due to the reddening. Clusters older than 6 Myr will not be affected by this contamination. Considering that we will need 6.1 minutes for guide star acquisition, 3.5 minutes for overheads and will observe each one of the galaxies for 20 minutes, we will need a total of 29.6 minutes per galaxy, the average exposure time available for a snapshot observation. Personel - Our group has proven experience in this field and in the work with HST data. All the members of the group have been involved in some of the principal papers studying the stellar population in the nuclear region of Seyfert 2's, which determined the presence of starbursts in ~40 per cent of them. We have complementary expertise, which will allow us to obtain the best scientific results for this dataset. Most of us have already worked with HST imaging data and have experience on the study of stellar populations. The code Starburst99, which will be used to model the colors of the star clusters, was developed by Leitherer, being also extensively used by Gonzalez Delgado. Proprientary Rights - We pointed out in the Scientific Justification the questions we would like to address with the data obtained in this proposal and the complementary data available in the HST archive. However, we are aware of the value this dataset have to the astronomical community, and the fact that it can be used for other purposes.
