Abstract We propose to utilize the unique UV capabilities of STIS and ACS/HRC in order to study the spatial and seasonal variations in ozone, condensates, and dust in the Martian atmosphere. The data obtained will be critical in addressing recent breakthroughs in understanding the basic radiative, transport, and microphysical processes that provide for both long-term and short-term balance within the global Mars climate system. The proposal includes both Cycle 11 & 12 observations in order to span the classic dust storm season on Mars and provide the first good opportunity for HST to synoptically observe a dusty atmosphere on the planet. The UV observations will complement broad-band visible and IR observations that will be made during the Mars Global Surveyor Extended Mission and will provide support for the future UV observations of MARCI on the 2005 Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9384( 6) - 02/13/03 14:56 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose combined Mars ACS/HRC and STIS observations totaling 8 orbits between January, 2003, when the solar elongation of Mars exceeds 50 degrees, through June, 2003, when the angular size of the planet will be about 12 arc seconds. These observations will continue during Cycle 12, when the effective resolution at the sub earth point will be ~ 7 km/pixel, identical to MGS global maps. The season on Mars during this period is spring and early summer in the Southern Hemisphere. This provides our first opportunity to obtain STIS observations or HST images of the classic dust storm season on the planet and will extend our knowledge of the seasonal variability of dust and ozone on Mars. Cycle 11 provides an opportunity for combined HST/Mars Global Surveyor observations; the UV observations will also provide useful input for the design of the MARCI camera for the 2005 Mars Reconnaissance Mission. In order to achieve these goals, we propose regularly spaced pairs of visits b y STIS and HRC on consecutive orbits that will provide the coverage needed to determine the seasonal behaviors of ozone and condensate opacities. The pairs will be targeted to the same face of Mars in order to separate the desired seasonal dependencies from geographic variation The pairs consist of an orbit of UV and visible HRC exposures followed by an orbit of STIS spectral scans. Real Time Justification ----------------------- The pairs and triplets must be scheduled on consecutive orbits of HST. Support of Current Mars Exploration Program The Hubble Space Telescope offers a significant contribution to studies of the Martian atmosphere and climate. It can provide unique scientific data in support of NASA's goals in solar system exploration and will, in addition, support spacecraft involved in the NASA Mars Exploration Program. Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) is currently observing Mars from an orbit that is almost circular and fixed relative to the sun in such a way that the local time on the illuminated side of the planet is 1400 at the spacecraft's nadir. The Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) on MGS maps Mars daily at a constant resolution of 8 km/pixel (using a hard wired variable summing algorithm) in two broad wavelength bands: violet (400-450 nm) and red (575-625 nm). Because MOC is always targeted at the nadir, the local times at the equator span only 12:17 to 15:43. The HST images therefore add diurnal information that is missing from MOC. The MARCI Wide Angle Camera that will be on the 2005 Mars Reconnaissance O rbiter will includes UV imaging capability; this is the first UV camera that will be flown to Mars. HRC and STIS observations in Cycles 11 and 12 will be invaluable in designing the optical system for the MARCI UV imaging. In summary, there are several important ways in which HST images and spectra can complement the spacecraft maps and provide unique information: * Concurrent HST and spacecraft imaging make it possible to address the diurnal dependence of atmospheric phenomena that is missing from MGS orbiter data. * HST UV images and spectra are quantitatively optimized for measurements of Mars atmospheric ozone. * Calibration based on the UV image pair measurements by HRC will be useful in determining the final MARCI configuration (James, Clancy, and Lee are MARCI investigation team members). We note that the currently adopted calibration of MOC was based upon HST images. * The HST imaging observations are also especially valuable for modeling opacities due to condensate clouds and dust in the Martian atmosphere and the wavelength-dependent absorption properties of the dust aerosols. * STIS UV determinations of atmospheric ozone, water ice clouds, and cloud-tracked winds will relate directly to temperature, water vapor, and aerosol measurements that will be made by PMIRR, which will also be launched in 2005. 9384( 6) -
