Abstract Titan's stratospheric haze not only hides the surface in visible light, it also traces the progress of Titan's seasons and controls the solar flux into the troposphere. Since 1994, we have monitored the seasonal context on Titan. We propose to continue this program and, with ACS and NICMOS, we can add important new measurements. Spacecraft polarimetry has suggested small particles, while high phase angle images suggest larger particles. Two types of models have been used to successfully explain the discrepancy: larger particles held above smaller particles by Titan's atmospheric dynamics; or a more uniform distribution of fluffy aggregate aerosols. The distinction is not just a question of large particles vs. small, it is about the process that governs the evolution of Titan's haze. New constraints have been slow in coming. Titan's disk integrated polarization near zero-phase angle does not distinguish the models. Intensity alone does not distinguish the models. We have the opportunity to make a set of observations that can test the models. We propose to obtain disk-resolved polarization measurements from 0.2 to 2 micron. We will use this information to develop a set of constraints on the type of particles in Titan's stratosphere. We will also continue our program of monitoring seasonal change on Titan, and use the data sets to provide context to the Cassini mission. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9385( 4) - 05/16/02 15:35 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This proposal requires 10 orbits in cycle 11 (about December 2002). ACS: We request 6 ACS orbits in 2 visits. Each visit consists of an initial orbit followed by a pair of dithering orbits. All images are taken with the HRC. Each orbit is assumed to have a 53-minute visibility period. Orbit 1 uses the F220W filter and all 3 UV polarization filters. The exposures for the three images are with CRSPLIT=3. Overhead is 6 minutes for GSA and 4.5 minutes for each CRSPLIT=3 image, totaling 19.5 minutes. This allows 11 min and 10 sec per filter, which we expect to result in S/N just over 30 (in the individual image for each polarization filter). This allows us to detect 3% polarization, positive or negative). Orbits 2 and 3 allow 5 minutes for reacquisition. Within them, a four- position dither is executed to improve resolution. Two positions are imaged in orbit 2, and 2 positions are imaged in orbit 3. The filter being dithered is F250W at CRSPLIT=1, due to the dithering. F555W will be imaged once at CRSPLIT=2 in orbit 2 and F550M will be imaged once at CRSPLIT=2 in orbit 3. All images are taken in one position, then a small offset occurs and the dither images are retaken. The image overhead is therefore 6 exposures times 2.5 minutes, plus 1 exposure at 3.5 minutes, or 18.5 minutes total. Including 20 sec for the offset SAM, overhead is 23.83 minutes. A total exposure time of 15 seconds for F555W (orbit 2, at S/N above 200) and F550M (orbit 3 at, S/N nearly 200) and 4.8 minutes for each F255W images fills out the orbits with 29.1 minutes total exposure time. Orbit 4 allows 6 minutes for GSA, and uses F625W, F658N, and F775W, each with all 3 polarizers, and F892N. All images are CRSPLIT=2. 10 images at CRSPLIT=2 requires 35 minutes overhead, for a total of 41 minutes overhead and 12 minutes science exposures. We allocate 6.25 minutes to F892N, 6 sec to F625W, 100 sec to F658N, and 9 sec to F775W. This totals 5.75 minutes for the polarization images and 12 minutes for all images. S/N is between 200 and 250 for all images (note that at S/N 250 with CRSPLIT=2, there is a substantial margin for avoiding saturation). Orbits 5 and 6 allow 5 minutes for reaquisition, and form a four-position dither to increase spatial resolution. The filters being used are F330W with all polarization filters, F435W with all polarization filters, and F502N. All images use CRSPLIT=1. Total overhead is 40.33 minutes. Exposures of 71, 10, and 45 sec result in a total exposure time of 12.6 min and S/N of at least 100 in each frame. NICMOS: We request one NICMOS orbit. This orbit is a near-copy of the NICMOS orbits from 1997 (GO 7321). We will substitute two NIC1 filters at 0.95 and 0.97 micron (which were used to observe Titan by another 1997 proposal) for filters that we found to be less useful. (The new filters are useful for calibrating the STIS internally scattered light.) We are planning for 53 minutes of visibility. We allocate 6 minutes for acquisition. We will take all of the 6 NIC1 images, then take all of the 8 NIC2 images, offset by 5 arcsec and retake all of the NIC2 images. We do not use a 5-arcsec chop at the exposure level, since moving the camera causes problems when comparing the polarization images. With NREAD=2 for all 22 images, we have 180 sec of exposure-level overhead. We also have 396 sec of instrument set-up and filter change overhead (21 filter changes). In addition, we allocate 84 sec for a switch from NIC1 to NIC2 and 30 sec for a 5- arcsec SAM. This totals 17.5 minutes of overhead. This allows 35.5 minutes for science exposures (3 minutes more than in 1997). This allows us to duplicate the exposure times we used in 1997, which resulted in S/N near 200, and compensates for the fact that the two new filters require longer exposure times than the filters they replace. WFPC2: We request one WFCP2 orbit in each cycle. We will use exposure times and gains from previous cycles. In particular, this orbit is a near copy of the 1997 WFPC2 visit. A 53-minute orbit has 6 minutes for acquisition, 35 minutes of overhead for 7 CRSPLIT images, and 12 minutes for science exposures. This allows S/N of 150 for F336W and FQCH4N-D (with slightly higher exposure times than in 1997), and of 200 for all other filters. STIS We request two identical STIS orbits in each cycle. They will be separate visits. Of 53 minutes, we allow 6 minutes for GSA. An acquisition is required. We will use the F28x50LP aperture with an exposure time of 0.5 sec, as we did in 1997. The relevant parameters are ACQTYPE=DIFFUSE, CHECKBOX=9, and geometric centering. The checkbox is smaller than Titan, but Titan is somewhat limb darkened in this filter, so the acquisition will find a point very near the center easily (no more than 3 pixels from the center). We allocate 6 minutes for this. We will not use an ACQ/PEAK: while we use the 0.1" slit, Titan is about 0.8". Given several spectra, we will have an ex post facto determination of the slit position on the disk. We will take 8 exposures with CRSPLIT=2, using the G750L grating at 7715Angstrom (20 minutes of overhead). Before the first exposure there will be a “0.35 arcsec SAM. Between each exposure there will be a 0.1 arcsec SAM as we push-broom the slit across Titan (160 sec total overhead) This leaves 18.3 minutes of exposure time, or 137 sec per exposure. This is slightly higher than the exposure time from 1997, so we expect adequate S/N to repeat the measurement of methane abundance. As long as the slit is aligned within 30degrees of north- south, the above offsets will work; if the orientation has to be different, we will make a small adjustment to the initial offset accordingly. STIS contemporansous flat fields will be required. We assume these can be taken outside of the visibility window. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Time-critical: there are loose constraints on each visit. 1) All visits should occur near opposition (phase angle less than 2.6 degrees) for maximum spatial resolution. It is desirable for all orbits to occur within a 3-week period (since seasonal change is being studied). 2) The two STIS visits (one orbit each) should occur with the slit orientation near Titan's north-south. One STIS visit (Titan-bright) should occur when Titan's orbital longitude is 90-140 degrees (a 2+ day window every 16 days); the other (Titan-dark) should be at longitude 180-360 degrees. The two visits should occur within 24 days. The opposition time- frame will allow maximum spatial resolution and a more nearly north-south slit orientation. The relative timing of the visits is designed to allow direct recovery of the stratospheric methane path-length. If the visits are farther apart in time, or of a different face of Titan, that scientific objective will not be attainable. Close association of a STIS orbit with the WFPC2 and NICMOS orbits facilitates accurate correction for long-wavelength scattered light.
