Abstract We will collect a series of observations with the ACS/HRC from which we will derive a two-color global map of Pluto's surface. We will image Pluto at F435W and F555W, wavelengths that have been extensively studied from the ground over the past 50 years. The maps will provide albedos with accurate error determinations down to 52 degrees South latitude. These observations will provide a second epoch of HST mapping of the active surface of Pluto as it continues to receed from the Sun and will provide an important context for other detailed studies of Pluto. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9391( 6) - 05/06/02 13:01 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ These imaging observations of Pluto will be used to construct a global map of Pluto. Each visit covers one sub-Earth longitude in two colors. The longitude spacing between all visits give 12 distinct sub-Earth longitudes for a 30 degree spacing between visits. The visits need not be scheduled consecutively. In fact, it is desireable to spread out the visits over the year to provide for a larger degree of roll variations in the observations. To get this spread in observation, timing constraints were added to make half of the observations run before Pluto goes into conjuction with the Sun and half after. Each visit is further constrained to fall within a limited range of phase angle. This constraint spreads the observations out, covers a range of phase angles, and leads to variation in spacecraft roll angle through the dataset. The dither pattern chosen gives both large scale (bigger than Pluto) and small scale motions to fill a unit pixel with 16 distinct positions. Real Time Justification ----------------------- n/a Calibration Justification ------------------------- n/a Additional Comments ------------------- Best results will be obtained from this program if the PSF and geometric distortions are very well understood. This calibration work is beyond the scope of any GO program but will be well worth the time spent in the system-wide calibrations allotment to provide on-orbit verification of the calibration work already done on the ground with ACS. Also, the sub-array data will probably be easier to calibrate if the sub-array readout were fixed and centered on the detector instead of varying to stay centered on the target.
