Abstract The question of whether the dwarf elliptical galaxy M32 contains a population of truly ancient stars has remained unsettled for decades. We recently used HST/WFPC2 to identify for the first time a population of RR Lyr stars in this galaxy. Since these stars are known only to be present in stellar populations older than 8-10 Gyr, we contend that M32 does possess an old stellar component and certainly cannot be comprised of only intermediate-age (~ 5 Gyr) stars as has been frequently suggested in the literature. Our earlier observations were insufficient to determine even the most basic photometric properties of these stars. Nor could we use the data to identify independent evidence of the old population that could help constrain just what fraction of the galaxy's stars are ancient. We propose new HST/ACS observations to (a) get periods and luminosities of the previously observed RR Lyr stars, (b) search for additional RR Lyr stars in a significantly larger volume of M32, and (c) obtain ultra-deep 2-color photometry to study the ancient main-sequence turnoff region of that galaxy directly, (d) look for radial population gradients in M32, both among the RR Lyr/Horizontal Branch and main-sequence populations, (e) compare the M31/M32 old populations in terms of metallicity spread, and (f) use the RR Lyr stars to precisely determine the relative and possibly the absolute distances of M32 and M31's halo. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9392( 6) - 11/13/03 17:04 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The only critical requirement is to obtain a consecutive series of observations over 18 orbits for both the M32 field and the M31 control field. The optimum observing strategy for RR Lyr stars (and one that is not possible from the ground) is to obtain continuous coverage through an entire pulsation period. We request a bit more to ensure that we can accurately phase RR Lyr stars of any plausible period (up to 0.75 days) and to obtain better phase coverage for the low-amplitude, short-period c-type variables that we have completely missed in our initial WFPC2 survey. We will also request similar roll angles and specific positions as shown in Figure 2 to improve our survey coverage in M32 itself, and to bring the M31 control field location closer to the M31 disk isophote on which the satellite galaxy lies. The need for an explicit control field is critical for this project. One of the persistent problems in past studies of this galaxy is the contamination it suffers from the disk and halo M31 stars on which the satellite system is superimposed. We identified 14 high-quality candidate RR Lyr stars in our M32 field, and about 15 other more dubious candidates, while in our control we identified 3-4 and 7-8, respectively. Coupled with the evidence of a radial gradient in the density of RR Lyr stars in the M32 field (though the number statistics are small) confirms that the variables are mostly M32 members. Without the control field, however we would have been uncertain of the level of M31 halo/bulge RR Lyr contamination. We request equal coverage for the control field as for M32 to ensure that our comparison of the findings in the two fields is free of bias. In particular, if we took the current control results only, we would have to make large and highly-uncertain corrections for detection efficiency and this would partly undermine the use of the controls in the first place. We have also argued in the scientific justification that the controls offer some important science in their own right -- comparison of the M31 and M32 RR Lyr populations, determination of the relative distances of the two galaxies -- so that the control can be justified on these grounds alone. But the overriding practical reason is to ensure that we have carried out a good experiment, with proper control and with minimal corrections for our observational setup. Real Time Justification ----------------------- There are no special requirements for this program. There are no coordinated observations requested for this program. Because of the nature of the variability of our targets, we require that the 8-orbit visits be scheduled close to at least one of the corresponding 5-orbit visits, and that the other 5-orbit visit be scheduled no more than 1 month from the other two visits. For example, visits 1 and 3 to M32 should be done within 1-2 days of each other; 9392( 6) - 11/13/03 17:04 - [ 3] visit 5 to that same target could then be scheduled up to one month later. The ORDER of the visits is not so important; thus one could do the visits to M32 in the order 5, 3, 1 or even 5, 1, 3 so long as visit 1 is close in time to either visit 3 or 5 as appropriate.
