Abstract We propose the most comprehensive imaging survey to date of low-redshift, early-type galaxies. Our goal is to exploit the exceptional imaging capabilities of the ACS by acquiring deep images --- in the SDSS g^ and z^ bandpasses --- for 163 E, S0, dE, dE, N and dS0 galaxies in Virgo, the nearest rich cluster. This extraordinary dataset would likely constitute one of the principal legacies of HST, and would have widespread applications for many diverse areas of astrophysics. Our immediate scientific objectives are threefold: (1) measure metallicities, ages and radii for the many thousands of globular clusters (GCs) in these galaxies, and use this information to derive the protogalactic mass spectrum of each galaxy; (2) measure the central luminosity and color profile of each galaxy, and use this information to carry out a completely independent test of the merging hierarchy inferred from the GCs, with the aid of N-body codes that simulate the merger of galaxies containing massive black holes; and (3) calibrate the z^ -band SBF method, measure Virgo's 3-D structure, and carry out the definitive study of the GC luminosity function's precision as a standard candle. Our proposed Virgo Cluster Survey will yield a database of unprecedented depth, precision and uniformity, and will enable us to study the record of galaxy and cluster formation in a level of detail which will never be possible with more distant systems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9401( 4) - 04/15/03 17:57 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ noindentunderbarObservational and Technical Requirements: At the distance of Virgo, (m-M) ~eq 31, GCs appear nearly as point-sources, being only partially resolved even at HST resolution. Our goal is to obtain a near-complete census of GCs in each of program galaxies. A high level of completeness is essential if we are to minimize the statistical uncertainties in the measured metallicity distributions (thanks to the excellent metallicity sensitivity of the (g^- z^ ) index, sampling errors will be the dominant source of error in reconstructing the mass spectra of protogalactic fragments from the measured metallicity distributions). Moreover, a thorough census of GCs and other compact sources, such as foreground stars and background galaxies, is needed before the SBF technique can be applied; the fainter we can identify and remove these sources, the smaller their contribution to the measured SBF signal. By reaching well past the GCLF turnover, their effect on the derived distance is negligible. To first order, the GCLF has a Gaussian form with peak M_V ~eq -7.4 and Sigma ~ 1.3 mag (Harris 1991). At Virgo, the GCLF turnover occurs at V ~eq 23.8. Thus, observations to a limiting magnitude of V_ lim = 25.75 will reach 1.5Sigma past the GCLF peak and include ~ 93\ level of photometric completeness for the Galactic GC system). To reach this limit with a signal-to-noise of S/N = 5 (for both the metal-rich and metal-poor GC populations, and in both filters) we require exposure times of t = 750s in F475W and 1120s in F850LP (see Figure 5) with the ACS/WFC, or one orbit per galaxy. Each series will be CR-SPLIT into a pair of exposures to ensure adequate removal of cosmic rays. WFC is preferred over HRC on the basis of its much larger field of view. specialpsfile=virgo3.eps hoffset=-20 voffset=-595 hscale=82. vscale=82. 2.85truein The nucleus of each galaxy will be centered on the ACS/WFC, allowing us to measure the luminosity and color profile out to a distance of R ~ 100^prime (7.2 kpc) with complete azimuthal coverage, and to R ~ 142^prime (10.3 kpc) with partial coverage. For the brightest galaxies in our sample, the images of the nuclei will have S/N ~eq 150 and 250 per pixel in the g^ and z^ bandpasses, respectively. (At the distance of Virgo, the ``break" in the luminosity profile should occur between 0arcs1 <~e R_b <~e 1^ , well suited to WFC's 0arcs5 pixels). At R ~ 100^prime , we calculate that the surface brightness profiles will have uncertainties of 0.01 (g^ ) and 0.004 (z^ ) mag, for an annulus of width 1^prime . Uncertainties on the measured surface brightness profiles (in 1^prime annular rings) for the faintest galaxies in our sample will vary between 0.001 mag at the galaxy center to 0.1 mag at R ~ 50^prime , at which point the surface brightness falls below Mu_V ~ 26 mag arcsec^-2. Thus, in the inner regions of all galaxies in our sample, the pixel- to-pixel variance will be dominated by stellar photon-counting statistics, allowing us to apply the SBF technique. At a declination of Delta ~eq 13^degrees, target visibility for Virgo is 52 min; guide star acquisition for each orbit will require 6.1 min. Filter changes, camera setups and readouts will require 4 + 2.5 = 6.5 min per series, or 13 min in total. All exposures exceed 6 min, so there is no penalty for dumping the buffer. Total ``on source" integration is then 31.2 min per orbit. noindentunderbarEstimated Timeline: Our team has previous experience in all observational and theoretical facets of this program, including HST surface photometry and isophotal analysis (Ferrarese et al. 1994), SBF techniques (Tonry et al. 2001; Blakeslee et al. 2001; Mei et al. 2001) and extragalactic GC systems (Blakeslee & Tonry 1996; Blakeslee et al. 1997; C\^ote et al. 1998; 2001ab). Our group has developed 9401( 4) - 04/15/03 17:57 - [ 3] state-of-the-art N-body algorithms for modeling the density structure of merger remnants (Milosavljevic & Merritt 2001; Merritt & Cruz 2001) and Monte-Carlo algorithms for modeling GC metallicity distributions in hierarchical formation scenarios (C\^ote et al. 1998; 2000; 2001a). Thus, we are confident that the program can be completed, and the results submitted for publication, within HST's usual one- year proprietary period. noindentunderbarData Products, Education and Public Outreach: Given the pivotal role played by the Virgo Cluster in modern astrophysics, we expect our database to be a valuable resource for the community for years to come. Our survey will be the definitive study of the early-type galaxy population in a low-redshift cluster, and provide a ``baseline" to aid in the interpretation of clusters at high redshift. We plan to make our results available to the general community through both the refereed journals and a dedicated website. A natural byproduct of our program will be an multi-color imaging database which is sure to capture the public interest. We will therefore maintain separate scientific and public websites, to meet the needs of these respective communities. Scientific data products will include a master database of GCs (including positions, magnitudes, colors, radii), azimuthally-averaged and 2D surface brightness and color profiles, and a catalog reporting GCLF and SBF distances to each of our program galaxies. We plan to make the software used to derive protogalactic mass spectra from GC metallicity distributions generally available through our website. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None.
