Abstract The final death throes of merging spiral galaxy nuclei are hidden behind dusty maelstroms of colliding gas clouds and glaring star formation activity. The dynamically important centers of mass can only be uncovered by imaging at NIR wavelengths and with the high spatial resolution of HST. We propose a near-infrared imaging program to inspect the physical processes of merging at spatial scales of ~100 pc. The Toomre Sequence provides the best sample of merging galaxies for such a study, because it has been studied extensively from the ground, and the global properties are well understood. Our previous Cycle 9 WFPC2 images of the nuclei have revealed a wealth of information on star forming activity and dust, but based on those data alone it is impossible to determine the locations of the current centers of mass. Determining the mass centers and stellar density profiles is important for understanding both the kinematics and the dynamical evolution of the nuclei, and the formation of nuclear density cusps in galaxies. We propose J, H and K band imaging of the nuclei in early and intermediate stage mergers in the Toomre Sequence. Because of the much reduced effect of dust extinction, the near-infrared images are also optimally suited to searches for nuclear rings and bars around the nuclei. Combined with our ongoing Cycle 9 program, these data will provide a detailed view of the structure and evolution of a sequence of merger nuclei. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9402( 4) - 10/02/02 13:30 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe each of the galaxies in the sample for 1 orbit, yielding a total of 11 orbits. The visit on NGC 7592A has an ORIENT requirement because the two components fit within the NIC2 field of view, but only when the camera is oriented in such a way that the diameter of the field of view is close to the line on the sky connecting the two components. The NIC2 camera has a field- of-view of 19.2 arcsec * 19.2 arcsec, and a pixel size of 0.075 arcsec. The median visibility time per orbit for our targets is 53 minutes. Each orbit will start with a 6 minute guide-star acquisition. For each galaxy we will do center the observations on the galaxy nucleus, with the following setups: (a) NIC2 camera + F110W filter. (b) NIC2 camera + F160W filter. (c) NIC2 camera + F205W filter. All exposures will be obtained in MULTIACCUM mode and with the STEP32 or STEP64 sampling sequence. The observations in the F110W and F160W filters will use a generic dither pattern with two dithered exposures separated by 0.6 arcsec in x and in y-directions (total of 0.8485 arcsec at angle 45 deg), which equals exactly 8 pixels ineach of x and y directions. This dithering strategy will allow us to correct for the transient bad pixels in the NICMOS cameras and bad columns and rows in x or y directions. Chopping, to allow proper background subtraction, will be done only for exposure (c). We will use the generic LINE patterns, as there appeared to be problems with the implementation of the NICMOS instrument-specific chopping patterns. We will first do the dither pattern on the galaxy center, and after that offset to a position either 60 or 90 arcsec away in an empty region of the sky, as judged by the Digital Sky Survey images or our previous WFPC2 images. The orientation angle of the chop is given in the pattern definition, in the celestial frame. This angle corresponds directly to the position angle measured east of north on the sky. The telescope will move to this new position to measure the background in an exposure dithered in a way similar to the exposure on the galaxy, and having an equal exposure time as the exposure on the galaxy (around 15 minutes). The dithered positions are made in the POS TARG frame with position angle 45 degrees, offsetting exactly eight pixels in x and in y directions. Ground-based or HST-based near-IR photometry in J, H and K is available for a few galaxies in the Toomre sequence. Based on previous NIR observations of NGC 3921 and NGC 7252 in a Cycle 7 program (GO 7268; P.I. van der Marel), we estimate that the median surface brightnesses in the central 1 arcsec for the galaxies in the sample are (in mag/arcsec**2): F110W: 15.0; F160W: 14.5; and F205W: 13.8. For a 6 minute exposure time in F110W and F160W and 15 minutes in F205W given, we would expect the following S/N per pixel: F110W: 90, F160W: 80 and F205W: 100. These values were calculated using the NICMOS Exposure Time Calculator (ETC). At larger distances from the galaxy center the S/N per pixel is lower. However, more pixels are available at a given distance, and pixels can easily be binned in radius to obtain an adequate S/N also at these larger radii. The surface brightness profile Sigma(r) out to r ~ 10 arcsec can therefore be accurately determined from each of the NICMOS images. All target coordinates were determined from our HST/WFPC2 images.
