Abstract We propose to image one ACS field containing four spectroscopically confirmed Ly- alpha\ emitters at z=4.5 in restframe UV and a narrowband filter containing the Ly- alpha line. These observations will (A) Reveal the morphology of the four spectroscopically confirmed sources. The high equivalent widths of the Ly-alpha\ line in these four galaxies in particular and this population in general cannot be explained without invoking one or more of: extreme youth of the stellar population, zero metallicity, energetic winds or type II quasars. Comparison of morphologies in the line and continuum would help favor or rule out some of these possibilties. This would also tell us whether the star-formation is uniformly distributed or centrally concentrated or concentrated but in many clumps? Proximity of these galaxies (average projected physical separation of 200 kpc, with one pair 30 kpc apart) also makes interactions likely. (B) Extend the luminosity function of Ly-alpha\ sources by 2.5 magnitudes due to better spatial resolution of HST and sensitivity of ACS. We will be able to detect sources with line flux of ~eq 2 * 10^-18 \ergcm2s over 11.5 sq-arcmins (~ 100 sources). This complements the LALA (Large Area Lyman Alpha) survey which covers 1/3 square-degree to a line sensitivity of ~eq 2 * 10^- 17. Thus we get a picture of this patch of young universe in two ways: statistics of faint galaxies and morphologies of relatively bright ones. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9411( 4) - 01/17/03 11:32 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ paragraphGeneral Considerations and Broadband Imaging: We have two main goals using the same data set: (A) Obtain high quality continuum photometry and basic morphological information for four spectroscopically confirmed z ~ 4.5 Ly- alpha\ emitting galaxies in a single ACS WFC field. (B) Extend the luminosity function of compact Ly-alpha\ emitters to fainter levels than can be achieved with ~ 1'' resolution ground based data. (We choose ACS for its combination of solid angle and efficiency.) These galaxies were selected for their Ly-alpha\ emission at observed 6600 Angstrom wavelengths. Their flux therefore shows a strong decrement for Lambda < 6600Angstrom (and drops to ~ 0 for Lambda < 4950 Angstrom). On the red side of this break, though, the galaxies are expected to have fairly blue continuum slopes. Combining these constraints, we therefore expect that the optimal signal to noise ratio for fixed observing time will be achieved using the F814W filter: Redder filters lose due to the declining quantum efficiency of the chips at longer wavelengths, while bluer filters lose signal as they sample increasing regions where little or no flux is expected from the object. This was confirmed using the ACS imaging ETC with a model for the continuum flux consisting of an f_Lambda \propto lambda^-1.5 power law truncated at Lambda = 6600Angstrom. The choice of F814W as the continuum filter implies that faint Ly-alpha\ emitters will be selected based on F658N - F814W colors. We have examined such candidate selection in our ground-based LALA survey, which includes filters with the same bandpasses, and find that the samples selected form F658N - F814W and from F658N - Johnson R colors are very similar. (The overlap is ~ 80\ and objects found only from F658N - F814W colors are invariably near the cutoff for F658N - Johnson R; i.e., there are no catastrophic misidentifications). Our spectrocopically confirmed Ly-alpha galaxies are unresolved in ground based images. Some of them are also undetected in the continuum filters. The improved spatial resolution offered by HST will allow much more sensitive searches for the stellar continuum in these galaxies: known galaxy populations at these redshifts (including Ly-alpha\ emitters) are quite compact. For an illustrative calculation, we take a flux level of 175 nJy at R band. This corresponds to the brightest continuum flux level from the sample and to the 3Sigma upper flux limits for the undetected objects, measured in a 2.25'' diameter aperture in ~ 1'' seeing from the ground. We further fix the half-light radius at 0.21'', in order to reproduce the mean observed surface brightness of z~ 4 galaxies from Roche et al (1998) (Mu_I ~ 24.0). To achieve a mean signal to noise ratio s/n ~ 10 per ACS WFC resolution element (2x2 pixels) inside the half light radius then requires t ~ 35$ ksec of integration time. With the typical half-light radius assumed above, we then expect some 14 resolution elements inside the half light radius, with a mean s/n=10. To see if this is sufficient for morphological analysis, we follow Ratnatunga et al (1999)'s results for the HST Medium Deep Survey analysis. They define a logarithmic signal to noise index xi for extended objects as the base 10 logarithm of the sum of individual pixels' s/n ratio, where the sum runs over all contiguous pixels above 1Sigma. Using only those pixels inside the half light radius, we infer xi ~ 2.1. Allowing for some contribution from pixels outside the half light radius gives 2.1 <~ xi <~ 2.4. Ratnatunga et al find that this range is sufficient to distinguish between disk-like (exponential profile) and bulge-like (de Vaucouleurs profile) morphologies. (Our analysis need not follow that of Ratnatunga et al 1999 closely if the Ly- alpha\ emitters have complex or disturbed morphologies. Rather, we take their formalism as an illustrative calculation of how good an image is required to extract morphological information on faint galaxies.) We note further that xi is invariant under changes in the half light radius (at least for objects that are well detected and resolved), so our morphological analysis of spectroscopically confirmed Ly-alpha\ sources will still be possible if the 9411( 4) - 01/17/03 11:32 - [ 3] half light radius is a bit larger or smaller. In addition to morphological information, we will obtain reliable continuum flux measurements with high statistical accuracy. (The approximate signal to noise after summing all pixels inside the half light radius \rhl scales as s/n ~ 8 * 10^-0.4 (R-27.9) * (0.21'' / \rhl), where R is the total Cousins R magnitude. Since surface brightness is approximately constant in starbursts Meurer et al 1997, we expect \rhl proptohboxflux^1/2 and s/n proptohboxflux^1/2. This is sufficient to detect the stellar continuum for sources with equivalent widths as large as 1750Angstrom (observer frame), or 320Angstrom\ (emission frame). As such, it will allow a major improvement in our equivalent width measurements, which currently depend on ground based images with 5Sigma limiting magnitude ~ 25.6. The total exposure time will be split into ~ 20 to 30 individual dithered exposures in order to reject cosmic rays and reconstruct fully sampled images in the data analysis. paragraphNarrowband imaging: We also request 17 orbits for narrowband observations in the F658N filter. Such observations will yield a mean s/n >= 5.5 per resolution element within the half light radius for the characteristic source brightnesses and sizes used above. While somewhat less deep than the broadband filter for continuum sources, the final narrowband image will be effectively deeper than the broadband for sources with strong emission lines in the bandpass, including our close pair of spectroscopically confirmed z=4.5 Ly-alpha\ emitters. In these cases, it will be possible to compare the stellar continuum light and line emission morphologies. Additionally, this deep narrowband exposure will sample the luminosity function in the Ly-alpha line at levels up to ~ 2.5 magnitudes fainter than our ground- based survey for compact Ly-alpha\ sources, assuming only that the surface brightness of starbursts is approximately independent of luminosity at high redshift as it is locally (Meurer et al 1997). paragraphSanity check: As a final consistency check on our observations, we note that Roche, Lowenthal, and Woodgate (2001) used broad and narrow band WFPC2 observations with integration times very similar to our request in order to to resolve a z=2.4 Ly-alpha source into an interacting pair, fit a de Vaucouleurs profille to one component and an exponential disk to the other, and identify many Ly-alpha\ emitters too faint for previous ground based observations of their field. Like us, they used a continuum filter offset to the red side of the narrow band. Our observtions will allow us to do similar science in a larger field, with better sampling and a better sensitivity limit thanks to the improved throughput of the ACS. paragraphCoordinated parallel observations: Our ground- based Large Area Lyman Alpha survey has a full field size of 36'. The spectroscopically confirmed Ly- alpha\ emitters that we will target with the ACS WFC lie near the center of this field. Thus, NICMOS and STIS will both be able to observe other portions of the LALA survey field in parallel. (WFPC2 would be another natural choice but is unfortunately not allowed as a coordinated parallel instrument with ACS primary.) Each of these instruments brings something interesting to our followup efforts, and we request coordinated parallel observations in all three. We plan spectroscopic followup of candidate Ly-alpha\ emitters in the parallel fields after the HST observations are executed and the precise locations of the parallel data are known. For STIS, we choose the unfiltered 50CCD configuration to maximize both imaging field of view and bandpass. In the absence of narrow band filters, we will use all the exposure time for a single ultradeep unfiltered image. Finally, NICMOS will allow a unique addition to our science by probing rest- frame optical light at sensitivity levels unattainable from the ground. We will use ultradeep F110W and F160W band images (~ 40 ksec each) with the NIC3 camera to study the older stellar populations in any candidates falling in the NIC3 field of view. (We choose NIC3 over the other, smaller, NICMOS cameras to ensure a reasonable expectation that there will be one or more good emission line candidates observed.)
