Abstract We have obtained excellent, new ground-based blue optical and HAlpha spectra of a sample of very early-type stars in the Magellanic Clouds in order to measure their physical properties, for comparison with the extensive data that exists for higher- metallicity Galactic stars. Our aim is to understand how effective temperatures depend upon metallicity (necessary in determining IMFs), and to explore the astrophysically interesting regime of stars of extreme temperatures, masses, and luminosities. In order to do this, we need to measure the stellar wind terminal velocities for our stars, necessary to constrain the stellar models. These can only be measured with STIS/FUV on HST. In addition, we will obtain higher spatial resolution data on the HAlpha line for stars for which nebular contamination is significant in our ground-based data. We also include several R136 stars with excellent STIS/CCD data but which lack UV line measures. These new HST data will provide important information about the strengths of stellar winds at extreme luminosities and the calibration of the Wind Momentum- Luminosity Relationship at lower metallicities. This proposal was highly rated in Cycle 9, but only 4 snapshots were obtained. We have completed the analysis of these plus additional data from the archives, but need spectra of the remaining objects if we are to answer the questions we pose. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9412( 2) - 01/03/02 06:45 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ For the STIS/FUV observations we will be using grating G140L. We plan to utilize the 0.2x0.2 arcsec aperture to alleviate any concern about neighboring stars in these the Magellanic Clouds regions. For the STIS/CCD observations, we will use the 52x0.2 arcsecond slit with the G750M grating (Halpha), as well as for occasional measurements of the HeI 3187 and HeII 3203 lines (G430M/3165) and/or HeI 4471 and HeII 4542 (G430M/4451) Neither of these require STIS peak- ups. In several cases we will need to do the acquisition on a nearby (<1 arcminte) offset star to avoid problems with crowded fields. In the cases where we require both STIS/FUV and STIS/CCD data, we can combine these into a single orbit, as we generally meet both of the criteria on p. 43 of the Primer, namely that there is less than 30 minutes of science using the CCD at a single target, and we are observing the target for only one orbit. The exceptions are the heavily reddened target LH90-Br58, which we observe in two (CVZ) orbits, but for which our STIS/CCD exposure is well below the 1800 sec limit. We also require a single CVZ orbit for the R136 stars. For R136, we will begin with an acquisition of a isolated offset star, and then make successful small angle maneuvers to each. Although nominally not needed, we will perform a PEAK on our offset star, as we have no other reference for the observations. We include a short full FOV image before and after the R136 observations as a check on variability. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We have adopted the CVZ visibility period for LH90-Br58 (2 orbits) and the four R136 objects (1 orbit), as they fall well within the predicted Cycle 11 CVZs, and scheduling this way would be most efficient; otherwise, the number of orbits will need to be increased to 3 and 2, respectively.
