Abstract We propose to use the large improvement in sensitivity and wide-field resolution provided by ACS to obtain for the first time the complete ~ 0.1 M_Sun to ~ 100 M_Sun IMF of a single massive young cluster. We will obtain BVI + nebular deep (V ~ 27) WFC photometry of six cluster and one background pointings and we will use the auto- parallel capacity of ACS to simultaneously acquire deep NUV+U+V photometry of selected regions in the cluster. Special care has been taken to treat all the complications which arise in the reduction of data for the purpose of calculating the IMF of a young cluster. We have chosen as our object of study N11 in the LMC because it arguably provides the best combination of stellar mass range (> 40 O stars, with several O3 stars), spatial resolution (1 WFC pixel = 0.0125 pc), low extinction (E(B-V) ~ 0.1), crowding, background confusion, and nebular contamination in comparison to other Galactic and Local Group clusters. It also has the advantage of having two separate regions, one which has already stopped forming stars and another one which is still forming them, thus allowing us to search for differences in the IMF between those two cases. The ACS data will be complemented with IR ground-based observations obtained using Gemini South, for which we already have been awarded time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9419( 4) - 11/04/02 08:17 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to use the ACS WFC with five different filters: F435W, F550M, F814W, F658N, and F660N. The WFC filters were selected to provide three-color (BVI) optical continuum photometry, with F550M and F814W being our base filters for the construction of complete color-magnitude diagrams of the cluster. F550M is preferred to F555W due to its much better blocking of nebular lines such as [O III] 5007 and H Beta (a problem expected to be serious in the LH 10 region). F435W will be used in combination with the previous two filters and the HRC data to produce color-color diagrams to map the extinction using the early-type stars in the field. The nebular filters F658N and F660N will be used to further reduce the effect of nebular contamination (in the form of both line emission and nebular continuum) by subtracting linear combinations of those images from the continuum images. The ACS auto-parallel capability will be used to obtain simultaneous observations with the HRC with another five filters: F220M, F250W, F330W, F550M, and F502N. The choice of HRC filters is predetermined by the selection of WFC ones. The F550M HRC images will be compared with the ones obtained with the WFC using the same filter to measure the effect of crowding, since the smaller pixel size of the HRC provides a better sampling of the PSF around 5 500 Angstrom. The F220M, F250W, and F330W will be used to characterize the massive star population and the extinction law using color- color diagrams. The F502N data will be used in conjunction with the WFC F658N and F660N images in a second phase of the study to analyze the interaction between the massive stars and the surrounding medium. We propose the use of three WFC pointings for LH9 (Fig. 1, right), three more for LH 10 (Fig. 1, left), and an additional one to measure the background population (outside the field shown in Fig. 1). The pointings were selected in order to cover most of LH 9 and all of LH 10 with the WFC while at the same time imaging the most interesting parts of the cluster with the HRC (note that LH 9 is imaged with the HRC when LH 10 is being observed with the WFC and viceversa). The central regions of both LH 9 and LH 10 will be covered in all of their three corresponding WFC pointings while their outskirts will be imaged by only one or two pointings (note also that the combination of the six WFC fields creates a single contiguous region). The visibility is 57 minutes/orbit for the declination of N11. The exposure times were chosen to optimize the (primary) WFC data while still obtaining at least one HRC observation. The HRC exposure times are calculated according to the rules specified in chapter 8 of the ACS manual (data are obtained only when the WFC exposure time is at least 465 s and ~ 1 minute is lost due to buffer dumps). The overheads involved are the guide star acquisition (360 s) or reacquisition (300 s) at the beginning of each orbit, the first exposure overhead (240 s) and the subsequent exposure overhead (150 s). For each WFC continuum filter we propose one short and one or two long exposures in order not to saturate the brightest stars in the field. The short exposure time was calculated using photometric data from the literature (Parker et al. 1992, Walborn et al. 1999) and the ACS ETC. The long exposure time was chosen in order to maximize the detection of weak red stars (i.e. low-mass pre-main- sequence stars). We used the ETC again to test that, for example, an m_V = 26 9419( 4) - 11/04/02 08:17 - [ 3] (M_V ~ 7.2) M-type star near the center of LH 9 or LH 10 will have a S/N ratio of 37.9 in F814W and 16.0 in F550M, which should make it clearly detectable. Even a similar m_V = 27 star would have a S/N ratio of 23.5 in F814W and 6.7 in F550M, still easily detectable.
