Abstract We propose to use HST/NICMOS to make Target of Opportunity observations of the galactic microquasar GRS1915+105. This source possesses transient radio jets which exhibit apparent superluminal motions, and resolved infrared emission from these jets has been observed in GRS1915+105 (Sams, Eckart, and Sunyaev, 1996; Eikenberry and Fazio, 1996). Because the jet ejection events are correlated with X-ray outbursts, we will use observations of X-ray flares with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer to trigger the HST observations. We will then monitor GRS1915+105 periodically with NICMOS, obtaining relative astrometry, photometry, polarimetry, and grism spectroscopy of the jets and the parent object. These observations will allow us to greatly increase our understanding of the jets' radiative mechanisms and physical conditions, and their evolution with time. We require the capabilities of HST and NICMOS due to the small angular separations between the jets and the parent object (increasing from ~ 0.1 to ~ 0.8 arcsec over the span of the TOO observations) and the high reddening towards GRS1915+105 (A_V ~ 30 mag). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9423( 14) - 05/15/03 07:43 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to obtain images, polarimetry, and grism spectra of the jets and parent object after X-ray outburst. We chose NIC2 for its excellent spatial sampling at these wavelengths. We will first obtain images using 9x STEP2 MULTIACCUM exposures dithered to allow removal of bad pixels, cosmic rays, etc. The total exposure time of 396-s will provide photometric uncertainties of <1\ expected jet brightness (K ~ 13.9 mag), and allow us to detect sources as faint as K ~ 22.0 mag. We will then obtain images in 3 different polarizations using the long-wavelength polarizers, allowing us to measure the Stokes parameters for the jet (which can provide important constraints on the magnetic field). As recommended in the NICMOS manual, we will use 4 dithered positions to provide simultaneous background measurements. We will use STEP2 exposures, giving a total exposure of 176-s in each polarization angle, and thus going nearly as deep as the imaging observations. We will then switch to NIC3, take a brief STEP1 exposure (for target registration), and then take a grism spectrum with G206. We will take 4 STEP8 exposures (to avoid saturation at ~ 300-s), giving a total exposure time of 640-s. The resulting spectrum will have a signal-to- noise ratio >10 per pixel over the 1.6-2.5 micron range for the expected source brightness. We estimate the total time for these observations to be 51-minutes (of the 52-minute visibility period): 6 minutes for initial acquisition, 711-s for the imaging exposures (9 exposures with 44-s integration, 4-s overhead, and 15-s dither overhead), 996-s for the polarization measurements (3 filters with 4 exposures each, 44-s integration, 4-s overhead, 15-s dither overhead, and 16- s for each filter change), 285-s to switch to NIC3, 27-s for the NIC3 image (23-s integration, 4- s overhead), 16-s for the grism change, and 656-s for the spectrum (4 exposures with 160-s integration and 4-s overhead). Real Time Justification ----------------------- The TOO observations will be triggered by observations of the X-ray outburst as follows. The proposal team will first determine and alert STSCI that the plateau state in GRS1915+105 has been established. This state is defined as a 5-day interval in which the source is: 1. radio-loud (> 30 mJy above 8.3 GHz, using data from either the Green Bank Interferometer (GBI) or Ryle Telescope monitoring programs), 2. shows a flat radio spectrum (radio spectral index > - 0.2), 3. diplays an X-ray low-hard state (30-50 c/s; ASM rates (1- day bins) show deviations < 10\ We would then trigger the TOO request in 1 of 2 ways: , trigger \#1: detection of a breakout flare (50\% increase in radio or X-ray flux within 1 day) or , trigger \#2: spectral evolution strongly indicates an imminent jet (i.e. significant and correlated curvature in the ASM rate, HR2 value, and radio index (as in Figure 1b) indicates that the system is about to burst). This TOO prescription is capable of observing some portion of all of the major radio flares observed since the GBI program was implemented. We further note that we could not find any plateau states, as defined above, that did not result in an outburst. The false alarm probability is therefore not an important concern. We hope to obtain the first HST observation ~ 5 days after the initial outburst, and then obtain a further 8 observations periodically spaced at ~ 5-7 day intervals. We require this time coverage in order to track the jet position, brightness, polarization, and spectrum as a function of time. We estimate a 30-40\ triggering this proposal during Cycle 11, based on the 9423( 14) - 05/15/03 07:43 - [ 3] activity level of GRS 1915+105 in the past 7 years. The proposing team has an established record of providing coordinated ground-based observations (VLA, VLBA, Palomar 5-m) and space-based observations (RXTE, Chandra) of this object during outburst, and expect to provide the same during any outburst covered by HST.
