Abstract Jupiter's ring system consists of three components: the main band, the vertically- extended inner halo and the exterior gossamer rings. Each component illustrates aspects of dust dynamics within Jupiter's inclined magnetic field and its strong plasma environment. We will image all three components with ACS during an unusual, extended period of edge-on viewing, December 2002 through February 2003. For faint planetary rings, this geometry improves the signal-to-noise ratio considerably and permits an unambiguous decoupling of radial and vertical structure. Although the Jovian rings have been examined by four spacecraft and from the ground, we are still lacking in a systematic set of data that can distinguish between the ring's prominent dust population and its embedded macroscopic source bodies. We also do not know the size distribution of dust with sufficient accuracy to test rival theories of ring origin. Observations of the system at a range of wavelengths and phase angles with ACS will finally make this determination possible. Coordinated observations at the W. M. Keck Telescope will extend our wavelength coverage well into the IR. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9426( 19) - 12/27/02 11:23 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The High Resolution Channel (HRC) will be used to image the ring system and small inner moons at a spatial scale of 82-102 km/pixel. In all cases, we will position Jupiter just outside the field of view. Because diffraction spikes in ACS images will be parallel to the pixel grid, we will place Jupiter off one corner of the frame, such that its diffraction spikes occupy two edges of the image. The field will be oriented such that the edge-on rings extend diagonally across the frame (or as close to diagonally as can be achieved given spacecraft roll constraints). We will take advantage of an unusual opportunity from early December 2002 through early February 2003, where the rings remain nearly edge- on to Earth while sweeping out nearly the full range of possible phase angles from ~10 degrees down to 0.16 degrees. The edge-on geometry makes faint rings especially easy to see, because the material piles up along the line of sight. The ring opening angle to Earth stays generally below 0.07 degrees during this entire period, leading to projected ring thicknesses that will be unresolved by the ACS. Images of the main rings will be timed to include Adrastea and/or Metis to serve as a geometric and photometric references. For the main ring and halo, we have selected three broadband filters that are well separated in wavelength to map out the colors of the rings and moons: F475W, F606W, and F814W. Individual exposure times will be ~120 seconds to limit the smear of Adrastea and Metis and to reduce the chance that scattered light from Jupiter will saturate the CCD. Exposures of the gossamer ring can be longer because the small moons will not be present and the chance of saturation will be smaller. These will be centered on the ansa of the Amalthea ring, with care taken to ensure that the tip of the main ring falls inside the field of view, to serve as a pointing reference. Our goal is map out the rings' colors as functions of phase angle, while taking advantage of the edge-on viewing geometry. Of greatest interest will be the opposition effect, which only appears within a few tenths of a degree of backscatter. The minimum phase angle, 0.16 degrees, should capture this phenomenon. We request observations at phase angles roughly distributed as 8-10, 4, 1.5, 0.5, and 0.16 degrees. At two of these phase angles we will image both ansae of the main ring to search for asymmetries. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Our window of opportunity begins in early December 2002 and ends around opposition on February 2, 2003. The smallest phase angle is only available for a period of a few hours around 9:00 UTC on February 2, so its timing is rather critical. The timings of other visits have much greater flexibility, ranging from days to weeks. All observations will need to be planned at times when the larger Jovian moons fall outside the field of view. This is a significant restriction, but our ephemerides indicate that suitable opportunities come along frequently. Co-I Imke de Pater is planning coordinated observations of the Jovian ring using the 10-meter W. M. Keck Telescope. We will use adaptive optics to provide optimal resolution on the main ring and halo, plus deeper 2.3 micron exposures to explore the faintest components of the gossamer ring. The combined data sets will span nearly a factor of ten in wavelength, providing crucial information about the 1-10 micron range of particle sizes. Exactly simultaneous observations will be useful but not absolutely critical; paired HST/Keck observations that fall within hours to days of each other should be adequate for most of our purposes.
