Abstract We propose to obtain SNAPSHOT STIS echelle observations of key tracers of hot interstellar gas (CIV, NV and SiIV) for selected FUSE Team OVI survey targets with known UV fluxes. By taking advantage of the SNAPSHOT observing mode we will efficiently obtain a large number of spectra suitable for the study of the highly ionized hot component of the interstellar medium (ISM). Our goals are to explore the physical conditions in and distribution of such gas, as well as to explore the nature of the interfaces between the hot ISM and the other interstellar gas phases. Using inter--comparisons of the various ionic ratios for CIV, NV, OVI and SiIV, we will be able to discriminate between the various models for the production of the highly ionized gas in the Galactic ISM. The survey will also enable detailed studies of regions already known to contain hot gas through X-ray emission measurements (e.g., SNRs and radio loops). The proposed SNAPSHOT observations will extend our previous Cycle 9 survey (which was compromised by the STIS side 1 failure), and should roughly double the number of stars for which high quality STIS observations of the important hot gas tracers are available, enabling us to derive a truly global view of the hot ISM. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9434( 5) - 03/31/03 14:44 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our goal is to obtain high-resolution STIS SNAPSHOT echelle observations of interstellar absorption lines for a large sample of stars using the E140M or E140H gratings with the 0.2"*0.2" slit, using a guide star and Fine Lock tracking for pointing stability. For most stars we will use the E140M grating (which covers the entire range from 1150- 1700 Angstroms), but for bright stars which would exceed the global countrate limits for the E140M grating we will use the E140H grating centered at 1489 Angstroms (which covers 1388-- 1590 Angstroms) to observe the CIV and SiIV doublets. We note that for many of the targets for which we propose to obtain E140H spectra there are E140H spectra covering the NV doublet taken as part of other programs. At the 3-7 km/s resolution of these proposed SNAPSHOT observations we should fully resolve the high ion lines, allowing us to distinguish between photoionization in warm (10^4 K) gas and collisional ionization in hot (10^5 K) gas. Our sample consists of all stars not successfully observed as part of our Cycle 9 program. The Cycle 9 list was created by first taking all FUSE Team ionO6 survey targets and checking for duplications with previous or planned GHRS or STIS observations. Then the available IUE spectra for the 199 stars without previous observations of CIV, NV and SiIV were used to calculate the exposure time necessary to achieve a S/N-ratio of 30 or higher at 1240, 1393, and 1550 Angstroms for each target with the E140H and E140M gratings. The STSDAS synphot simulation tools (primarily countrate and calcphot) were used to calculate the count rate at each wavelength as well as the global count rate for each spectrum -- all stars which ``passed'' this test as well as a small control sample were also run through the on-line STIS Spectroscopic Exposure Time Calculator to double--check the synphot calculations. Two lists of objects for which a S/N--ratio of >30 at each line could be achieved without violating the STIS global count rate limits were then generated for each grating, consisting of stars requiring exposure times of 5 or 10 minutes for the E140H grating and stars requiring exposure times of 10 or 20 minutes for the E140M grating. After removing targets observed during Cycle 9, the final target list consists of 40 E140H and 56 fainter E140M targets, roughly evenly divided between exposure times. The SNAPSHOT observing mode in Cycle 11 requires that the observations take less than 45 minutes, including all acquisition and exposure overheads. The times for guide star acquisition, target acquisition, and the MAMA spectroscopy overhead total 20 minutes (using the times listed in the Phase-1 instructions). Thus we have total exposure times of 25, 30, or 40 minutes. We will now consider observations of a randomly selected target from our sample. The star HD 64568 (07h53m38.21s -26deg14'02.6" epoch 2000.0) is a O4Vf star at a distance of approximately 5580 pc, roughly in the Galactic plane. It is fairly reddened, with an apparent visual magnitude of 9.38 and an E(B-V) of 0.26. Using the one low resolution IUE SWP spectrum of this star and the on- line STIS spectral simulator, we expect a S/N of ~30 at 1240 Angstroms, ~43 at 1400 Angstroms, and ~40 at 1550 Angstroms for a 20 minute E140M exposure. Note there are no high resolution observations of this line-of-sight, as for many of the stars in our sample. Real Time Justification ----------------------- NONE The FUSE Team OIV survey will provide far-UV spectra for the stars in this 9434( 5) - 03/31/03 14:44 - [ 3] SNAPSHOT program. Several of the collaborators have access to the FUSE data during its short proprietary period (6 months), but we expect that all of the FUSE data will be in the public domain by the time the proposed SNAPSHOT observations are available.
