Abstract We wish to search for rotation signatures in the initial portion (first 100 AU) of a sample of outflows emanating from T Tauri stars (TTSs). This project originates from our detection of systematic transverse radial velocity shifts in STIS spectra of the DG Tau jet (Bacciotti et al., 2002). The shifts, observed in a region where the flow is already collimated, but has not yet manifestly interacted with its environment, are consistent with the predictions of magneto- centrifugal launching models, and may constitute the first observed indication for rotation in the initial portion of a jet flow. Rotation is a fundamental ingredient in star formation theories, thus we propose to confirm the above result by carrying out a systematic survey in similar flows. We plan to take for each jet a STIS spectrum in the 6300 -- 6800 Angstrom range, with the slit perpendicular to the flow direction and at a distance of about 0.''3 from the source (i.e., in our targets, 40 -- 70 AU along the jet depending on inclination angle). Since the flows are resolved transversely with HST, the proposed slit orientation allows for the direct detection of systematic velocity shifts. Where found, we will check for consistency between the sense of rotation observed and that of the underlying disk through CO interferometric measurements. As a by- product, estimates of the excitation conditions across the flow (including ionization fraction) and of the mass outflow rates will be derived. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9435( 17) - 03/03/04 12:04 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We wish to search for signatures of rotation in a sample of T Tauri star jets close to their source (less than 100 AU). Our target list includes outflows from 8 sources, 3 of which are known to be bipolar. We propose to use the G750M STIS grating centered on 6581 Angstrom. Our spectra would then cover the range from 6295 Angstrom to 6867 Angstrom allowing us to capture in one setting HAlpha and all the strong red forbidden emission lines commonly observed in HH jets. We propose a slit width of 0.''1, since this will match the Point Spread Function of HST to give the maximum available resolution. The position angles of the flows have either been obtained from ground-based images or from images in the HST Archive. Pointing to the star will be achieved using ACQ/PEAK exposures with the slit rotated at right angles to the outflow. Then offsets by +/- 0.''3 will be applied (0.''6 and 1'' - 2'' for the HH 30 and the DG TAU jets respectively, as the stars are obscured by the disk dark lane). Our exposure times are largely determined by the flux in the SIILambda6731 line which can be weak because of high densities close the source. This line has generally about one half the line flux of the OILambda 6300 line. For the brighter of our objects, DG Tau, the SII Lambda6731 surface brightness is of about 10^-13 erg s^-1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2 AA^-1 in our STIS spectra and at ~ 0.''3 from the source. The jets from CW Tau and RW Aur have similar fluxes. Using the latest version of the STIS Exposure Time Calculator, we find that for an effective total integration time of 1800 sec (3 way cosmic ray split of one orbit i.e. 3x600s) one gets a S/N ratio of about 80 in regions free of stellar continuum emission. The S/N may be reduced to about 10 where surrounding nebulosity reflects the stellar continuum. Nonetheless, such a contribution can be subtracted from our spectra with standard techniques. For some of our objects, like DG Tau B, DP Tau, and LkHa 321, the relevant lines will be fainter by a factor 4 to 5. In these cases, for a SII Lambda6731 surface brightness of only about 2 10^-14 erg s^-1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2 AA^-1 an integration time of 3600 sec (again split for cosmic ray detection) will lead to a S/N of 28. Therefore, we are asking for two orbits for the objects with fainter lines. In calculating our total HST orbit requirements, we have allowed 7 minutes (on average) for guide star acquisition as well as 8 minutes for STIS target acquisition exposures and 5 minutes for peak-up. In addition we have assumed an instrument overhead of 3 minutes for readout, etc. E.g., for the case of CW Tau the total time per slit position is then 53 minutes, i.e. the visibility period of the star per orbit. Thus in summary, one to two orbits (depending on target) per slit position will provide us with data with a sufficient S/N ratio. In total we request 16 orbits for all 8 targets. We would like to point out that the studies proposed here are not feasible from the ground using adaptive optics in the near-infrared. The main reason is the lack of lines usable as diagnostics close to the source. The only important near-infrared lines emitted by YSO jets are the FeII 1.53 and 1.64 micron lines. However, relative to the adjacent continuum, these lines are 10--30 times fainter than, for example, the OI Lambda6300 line. Furthermore these lines have N_e, crit values of only a few 10^4cm^-3, which is much lower than that of the OI Lambda6300 line (N_e, crit ~ 10^6cm^-3) making the FeII lines unsuitable for scales of 0.1''--0.3'' where N_e values of 10^5--10^6cm^- 3 are sometimes observed.
