Abstract Rotation is now recognized as an important physical component in understanding massive stars. Theory suggests that rotation affects the lifetimes, chemical yields, stellar evolution tracks, and the supernova and compact remnant properties (Heger & Langer 2000, Maeder & Meynet 2000). In a Cycle 7 program, we proved that rotational mixing occurs in massive main sequence stars (Venn et al. 2001). In this proposal, we want to quantitatively test model predictions and constrain the theory for a better understanding of massive star evolution. We are requesting HST STIS observations of the BIII 2066 Angstrom resonance line of seven massive stars in three young clusters carefully selected from IUE analyses. These stars show traces of boron depletion, but without nitrogen enrichment; rotation is the only theory able to explain this abundance pattern. These new abundances will allow us to test rotating model predictions: that mixing strength increases with stellar age, mass, and rotation rate. They will also help to quantitatively constrain the rotational mixing efficiencies in massive stars. One very high S/N spectrum of a moderately boron-depleted star is also requested. We wish to measure its 11B/10B ratio, which is predicted to change as boron is depleted in the rotating models. This ratio will further confirm rotational effects and observationally constrain the 10B(p, Alpha) thermonuclear reaction rate, which is presently highly uncertain. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9437( 5) - 05/07/03 09:26 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Target Selection: We are requesting HST STIS observations of the BIII 2066 Angstrom line in seven main sequence B-type stars. Stars in the temperature range of 20, 000 - 29, 000 K were shown to be the most reliable boron abundance indicators by Venn et al.(2001). All of the targets have sharp-lined spectra (see vsini values in the Table below); these stars probably have typical B-star rotational velocities (>200 km s^-1), but are seen nearly pole-on. All targets are in young clusters, thus we have preliminary estimates of their ages (although these preliminary ages are from standard evolution tracks, and part of this proposal are consistent mass, age, evolution state determinations from the new rotating tracks). Published analyses of these stars (Gies & Lambert 1992 ApJ 387, 673; Cunha & Lambert 1994 ApJ 426, 170) show they have normal, unenriched nitrogen abundances in their atmospheres. Analysis of archival IUE spectra (Proffitt & Quigley 2001 ApJ 548, 429) suggest they may also have low boron abundances. This configuration allows sufficient resolution of the BIII 2066 Angstrom feature, given the vsini values of our targets, and STIS ETC calculations show that the observations will not exceed the MAMA brightness limits. Unfortunately, all other configurations exceeded the MAMA brightness limits. In the Table below, we show our exposure time estimates per star. We have calculated the S/N estimate for 10, 20, and 30 inutem exposures, and then determined the number of exposures necessary to reach S/N=100; we also summarize the total exposure time per star. Three different exposure times were used in order to (a) minimize potential spectral line broadening due to variability, e.g., HD214993 is a known Beta Ceph variable, with noticable spectral line variations (>= 10 kms) in ~36m. (b) minimize the number of exposures, and thus wavelength calibrations (at 4m each) and eventually the number of orbits. Exposure times were estimated using Kurucz model fluxes to calculate the observed flux for each star at 2066 Angstrom. For HD36285, we are requesting a very high S/N, high resolution spectrum to determine the 11B/10B ratio. Using the documented throughput for the unsupported 31x0.05NDA slit (dex ND factor of 0.4), we estimated the exposure time using the E230H grating. We require this slit to be able to dither the exposure to maximize the S/N, without exceeding the MAMA brightness limits. From its flux estimate at 2066 Angstrom (above table), an exposure of 195 minutes yields S/N=300 (Poisson), with very high resolution (~0.05 Angstrom per resolution element, or 8 km/s, which is similar to vsini for this star). A global count rate of 1.8e5 is just under the MAMA limits. A check on the 9437( 5) - 05/07/03 09:26 - [ 3] potential cross order contamination using a theoretical PSF suggests less than 1%. We believe that we will be able to model this small effect in the order overlap sufficiently well to achieve a true S/N>= 200. Although this slit is unsupported, it is the only way to obtain the requisite spectrum. Orbit estimates: The total number of orbits per star have been estimated using the exposure times determined above, and including time for the appropriate overhead requirements. One important additional point is that the BIII 2066 Angstrom feature can be observed in three different E230M set ups (for Lambda_c of 1978, 2124, and 2269). In order to obtain the best possible S/N, we have selected to make some of the exposures at each Lambda_c setup. Thus, we include time for the slight wavelength offsets (or tilt changes) between otherwise identical, sequential exposures.
