Abstract We propose to determine the composition of Io's largest volcanic plume, Pele, with unprecedented accuracy. This will give us new constraints on the temperatures, pressures, and magma composition of this volcano, and thus an improved window into Io's interior. We will use the proven Jupiter transit spectroscopy technique, which resulted in the discovery of S_2 gas in the Pele plume, but will use exposures that are 4 times longer than in the discovery observations. This will allow us to accurately measure plume SO_2 abundances, seen only with low S/N in the discovery observations, and possibly SO, in addition to S_2, and gives the chance to discover other, currently unknown, plume components. We will also use ACS to obtain UV and visible images of the Pele plume in reflected light prior to Jupiter transit, to constrain the dust abundance and particle size in the plume. This will allow refined estimates of plume dust/gas ratios and resurfacing rates. We will repeat the observations four times to build up S/N to even higher levels, and to look for time variability in both dust and gas abundance and chemistry. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9440( 26) - 07/23/03 08:30 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We plan four identical observation sequences of 2 HST orbits each, for a total of 8 HST orbits. Each sequence consists of one orbit of ACS imaging of Io against dark sky immediately before Jupiter transit, followed by one orbit of STIS spectroscopy during the transit. \medskip noindent ACS Plume Imaging The first orbit of each sequence will be used for HRC imaging of Io in multiple filters against dark sky prior to Jupiter transit. Table 1 gives planned exposure times and S/N estimates. Note that HRC with F250W gives S/N = 389 in 900 seconds, while an equivalent WFPC2 F255W integration gives S/N = 60 for the same effective pixel area. We will target Io (which cannot be acquired directly while in transit) by offsetting from another nearby Galilean satellite. We will then obtain spectra using the G230LB grating and 0.1 arcsec slit, giving a 2100 - 3100 Angstrom\ spectral range (limited at the short end by grating-scattered light) with 3 Angstrom\ resolution. We use the CCD rather than the MAMA because bright-object protection issues prevent pointing the MAMA at Jupiter. In October 1999 we took five spectra with identical 255s exposure, stepping across the plume location. In Cycle 11 we plan one 1020s exposure at the plume location, followed by one 255s exposure offset by a slit width (0.1 arcsec) to either side of the long exposure, as insurance against pointing errors. This plan can be done in a single HST orbit (we have already done so, in December 2000- see below). With four times the integration time, we expect spectra with twice the S/N of the Cycle 8 spectra (Fig. 1). In the absence of obvious time variability we can further improve S/N by coadding spectra from all four orbits, giving a further doubling of S/N. noindent Pointing Accuracy We carried out this exact observing plan in December 2000 in the final orbit of our Cycle 8 program, but a pointing error resulted in neither the central 1020s exposure or either of the 255s exposures including Io or the Pele plume in the slit (Hubble Problem Report \#683). HST should be able to offset accurately enough from another Galilean satellite to put the Pele plume in the 0.1 arcsec slit, and an investigation could find no explanation for the pointing failure other than possible inaccuracies in the Galilean satellite ephemerides used by HST, which had errors in individual satellite positions of up to 0.17'', sufficient to account for the pointing failure. Since that observation, new Galilean satellite ephemerides with errors less than 0.002'' have been adopted by HST, so we do not expect a repeat of this failure. Experience with previous HST programs has shown that there are many suitable opportunites, however, and scheduling four such observations in one year will not be difficult.
