Abstract HD 209458 b is the first extrasolar planet known to transit the disk of its parent star. Precise measurement of both the photometric transit curve and the radial velocity orbit has allowed for an accurate estimation of the mass, radius, average density, and surface gravity. Numerous theoretical investigations of the planetary atmospheres have been presented in the literature, but no data capable of addressing these has yet been published. We propose to use the method of transmission spectroscopy to constrain greatly models of the planetary atmosphere. We will use STIS to disperse the stellar flux over a large number of detector pixels. The photometric signal is produced by summing the counts over a desired band. For each of twelve bands spanning the UV to the near-IR, we will obtain sufficient precision to detect variations in the transit depth greater than 5 X 10^-5. We have already made a detection of the sodium absorption signature in the planetary atmosphere. With these new data, we will be able to detect, if present, absorption due to Rayleigh scattering, water bands, and/or strong alkali metal lines. These observations will allow us to determine the broad characteristics of the planetary atmosphere. For example, we will be able to distinguish between models with a high cloud deck, and those with no clouds but reduced chemical abundances. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9447( 8) - 06/10/03 08:58 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe HD 209458 during four visits. For two of these visits, we will use the blue low-resolution grating G430L, and for the other two visits, we will use the red low- resolution grating G750L. Each visit will consist of five orbits. We have observed, in our previous GO/DD-8789 program, that the photometry is not adequately stable during the first orbit of a visit; however, excellent stability is maintained for subsequent orbits. We will time the observations so that, for each visit, two orbits will occur during transit, and two will occur outside of transit. Further details on the timing constraints are given in the ``Special Requirements'' section. The important point is that a very similar set of constraints was placed on our previous GO/DD-8789 visits, and these were accommodated within the HST orbit scheduling. In a 35 s exposure in G430L and a wide slit (52 X 2 arcsec), the brightest pixel in a single image will have 1.38 X 10^5 e- (at 457 nm), and the total e- over the entire detector would be 2.3 X 10^8. Dividing this wavelength coverage into six bands with roughly equal numbers of e- (e.g. 290--409 nm; 409--445 nm; 445--474 nm; 474-- 503 nm; 503--531 nm; 531--570 nm), then the precision in each band per exposure will be 1.6 X 10^-4. Of course we are free to redefine the band limits at any point in the analysis; we are simply illustrating a possible choice here. We will use a 64 pixel subarray, with a readout time of 20 s, so that each exposure requires a total of 55 s. For orbits 2--5, we can accommodate 48 such exposures per orbit (slightly less for orbit 1), and thus achieve a precision of 2.3 X 10^-5 during each orbit. Since there will be two out-of-transit orbits and two in-transit orbits, we will be able to detect a change in the transit depth of 7.0 X 10^-5 at the 3 Sigma level (this includes the degradation due to differencing the data in and out of transit). Combining the results of two such visits, we could achieve a 3 Sigma detection of an atmospheric absorption signature with a depth of 4.9 X 10^-5 in each of the example bands given. Similar numbers hold for 30 s exposures with G750L. Again, choosing six bands (as an example) with roughly equal numbers of e- (e.g. 524--588 nm; 588--638 nm; 638--688 nm; 688--743 nm; 743--825 nm; 825--1027 nm), we will again achieve a 3 Sigma detection of an atmospheric absorption signature with a depth of 4.7 X 10^-5 in each band. Of course, we can also search for narrow features, such as alkali metal absorption lines, by choosing more narrow bands. For example, consider the sodium absorption feature described earlier. With the low resolution G750L grating, the same wavelength band will now span 4 pixels. For each 30 s observation, the total counts in the band will be 1.34 X 10^6 e-, corresponding to a precision of 8.6 X 10^-4. Summing over all exposures, we achieve a precision of 6.2 X 10^-5 in this band. Thus, we would be able to confirm the observed signal with same level of confidence (4 Sigma). The important point is that despite the loss in resolution, we still have good sensitivity to individual absorption lines. The numbers above quantify our predicted detection limits for a convincing level of statistical significance (3 Sigma). However, we note that some of the current models predict variations that are very large compared to our sensitivity. For example, the no-cloud model of Brown (2001) (shown in Figure 3) has a water band near 700 nm with a typical depth of 2.5 X 10^- 4 that extends over one of the observational bands defined above. Similarly, the same model has a Rayleigh scattering feature at a similar amplitude over the majority of another band. These amplitudes are greatly in excess of our 3 Sigma upper limit of 5 X 10^-5: In each case, if such a signal were present, we would have an unimpeachable detection. We are 9447( 8) - 06/10/03 08:58 - [ 3] pushing the envelope of high precision SNR capabilities of STIS. Toward this end we will use contemporaneous flats as routinely available for G750L, and also request that such be allowed for G430L. Furthermore, we have noted in our GO/DD- 8789 observations (which provide the most stringent test of high SNR STIS/CCD capabilities to date) that the first orbit of a visit has transients unique to other orbits decreasing its utility for final results. The latter is only a loss of efficiency in the worst case that the first orbit of data must be ignored. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We will need to schedule our visits so as to observe the system at times spanning primary eclipse. Moreover, we desire to phase the two visits with each grating so that, when phased, the observations span nearly the entire transit duration. The period and transit epoch of HD 209458 are both known to an accuracy of several seconds, and hence with sufficient accuracy for the necessary phasing constraints during a phase II proposal. These timing constraints are within the limits that can be accommodated by HST: Very similar constraints were required and achieved in our observations of this system in our GO/DD-8789 program, and have also now been accommodated in scheduling the recent GO- 9055 observations. We will not require coordinated observations with other observatories. Calibration Justification ------------------------- We have requested special calibrations in the form of more extensive flat fields for this innovative program that is pushing the envelope of S/N for the STIS/CCD. In Phase I we requested that "contemporaneous flats" be obtained not only for G750L, but also for G430L. For both G430L and G750L the S/N reached by obtaining flats throughout the occultation period remains smaller than that for the star, and therefore the extensive flats are useful. For G430L this uses 52X2 + G430L to provide high S/N in the spectroscopic form in use for science. For G750L we collect G750L + 52X2 flats to S/N 1000 per pixel during each central occultation, and after the last orbit a series of G750L + 0.3X0.09 (slit recommended for contemporaneous flats appropriate to point sources) at much (about 500) higher S/N than using the default CCDFLATs. Additional Comments ------------------- We take an explicit WAVEcal at the end of each visit, but otherwise turn off the automatic wavecals which would reduce by a considerable amount our on- target time so critical for these observations. With our extremely high Signal- to-Noise for the repeated stellar observations relative wavelength offsets can in any case be derived to much higher precision from these spectra, than would be provided by a few auto wavecals. The requirement of obtaining high S/N contemporaneous flat fields throughout the program results in use of most of the time in the occultation periods. The need to obtain predictable phase coverage on the HD 209458b transit requires that the visibility periods be free of the SAA, the nearly full occultation periods impose the further constraint that the full five orbit sets must essentially be SAA free. 9447( 8) - 06/10/03 08:58 - [ 4] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9447( 8) - 06/10/03 08:58 - [ 5] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 HD209458 STAR, G V-IV RA=22H 3M 10.78S +/- 0.01S, J2000 V = 7.64+/-0.05 DEC=18D 53' 3.5" +/- 0.1", B-V = 0.58 PLATE-ID=01X1 Coordinate Source: HST_IMAGE Comments: Extrasolar planet host star.
