Abstract In 1994, HST produced the first detection of a supermassive black hole, of a few billion M(sun), in a galactic nucleus. That discovery marked the beginning of a new era for black hole studies. Today, the firm, dynamical detection of an intermediate mass black hole, one with 10^2 < \mh< 10^6 M(sun), would have an equally profound impact. No such detection exists. NGC 205 is the only galaxy in which one can be attempted. We propose to obtain for NGC 205 the most complete dataset available for any galaxy targeted by HST for similar studies. Eleven orbits with STIS will provide the kinematical information. One orbit with NIC1/F160W (~ H) will produce a surface brightness profile at ~ 0\Sec1 resolution. Variations of mass-to-light-ratio with age are minimized in the near IR, reducing the potential of biasing the deprojected mass density. Two orbits with ACS/HRC/F555W and F814W (~ V and I), at twice the NIC1 resolution, will allow us to quantify the broadening introduced by the NICMOS PSF in the H-band brightness profile. Furthermore, they will resolve the nucleus into individual stars: with the aid of a color magnitude diagram, stellar populations differing in age and/or metallicity can be identified, and an independent estimate of the mass density can be derived directly for each. To give all competing groups a fair chance of analyzing the data in a timely fashion, we ask for a reduced, three month proprietary period. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9448( 5) - 09/10/02 15:39 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ STIS Long Slit Observations: 11 orbits. Observations of the CaII absorption triplet (LambdaLambda = 8498, 8542, 8662 Angstrom) have become the standard choice for stellar dynamical studies; the higher surface brightness in the red allows higher S/N than could be achieved for the MgI lines at 5200 Angstrom. Since the ability of securely measuring the BH mass is lost unless the BH sphere of influence can be resolved, the use of the 52\sec * 0\Sec1 slit is imperative for our study (the narrower 0\Sec034 slit undersamples both the Line and Point Spread Functions, and would not provide increased spatial nor spectral resolution). The grating will be the G750M, with a spectral sampling of 19 km/s at 8500 Angstrom. This is comparable to the central velocity dispersion measured from the ground (e.g. Carter & Sadler 1990); velocity dispersions at least a factor two smaller can be measured from the data with minimal bias (Fig. 5). Based on our experience with the HST/STIS/G750M data for M33 (Merritt, Ferrarese & Joseph 2001) a S/N of at least 30 per pixel in the central data-point is necessary to produce Sigma and LOSVDs accurate enough for the dynamical modeling (see also Fig. 5). Using the on-line STIS Exposure Time Calculator, for R=13.5 mag arcsec^-2, G750M, and the 52*0\Sec1 slit, we need a total of 23, 000 seconds on target. Orbit visibility is 54 minutes for NGC 205. The first orbit will include the initial guide star acquisition (6m), target acquisition (8m) and peak-up (6m), plus a short (a few seconds) image of the field to confirm the position of the galaxy within the slit (9m overhead). This leaves a total of 17m for one CR-SPLIT scientific exposure (6m overhead), and a CCD fringe flat exposure (2m). For all other orbits the overhead will be 5m for GS re-acquisition, 6m for each CR- split science exposure, 1.5m for a wavecal exposure, and 2m for a flat exposure, leaving 39.5m for science observations. We therefore require 11 orbits of HST time to achieve a spectrum of the required S/N. The slit will be oriented along the major axis of the galaxy. Because most of the dynamical effects of the BH are contained within the central 0\Sec1, there is little advantage in obtaining spectra at more than one position angle. CCD fringe flat fields and wavecal calibration will be obtained for each science exposure. Each spectrum will be shifted relative to the others along the dispersion direction to facilitate removal of CCD defects. The possibility of dithering the observation to improve the spatial resolution will be discussed with the STIS Instrument Scientists if the proposal is successful. We do not request template star observations with this proposal. Four template stars already exist in the HST archive (two of spectral types G8-III, one K0- III and one K3-III) observed with the same instrumental configuration we propose to use, and are scheduled to be observed again next year as part of separate projects (GO-8591 and GO-9106). beginfigure plotonen205fig3.epsi endfigure NICMOS F160W Observations: 1 orbit. NIC1 observations will allow us to derive the surface brightness profile of the galaxy in the near-IR, at the highest possible spatial resolution. By using the F160W (H) filter (K is not available for NIC1), we will minimize the sensitivity of the mass-to-light ratio to variations in stellar population. Assuming R-H ~ 2.5, the galaxy H- band surface brightness will vary from 11 mag arcsec^-1 at 0\Sec05 to 17 mag arcsec^-1 at the edge of the field (5\Sec5). To be on the safe side, we set an upper limit to the exposure time for a single exposure of 240s, above which the detectors saturates for H < 10 mag arcsec^-1. The images will be ``chopped'', i.e. an exposure of the sky will be taken after each on-target exposure. Due to the large angular size of the galaxy, the telescope will likely have to be moved by a few arcmin, introducing a ~ 5m overhead per move. Additional overheads include 6m for guide star acquisition and 0.33m for small slews between each exposure (needed to correct for CCD defects). Therefore, within one orbit we will be able to take three series of on-target + sky exposures, with on-target integration time of 240s each. This will provide plenty of S/N 9448( 5) - 09/10/02 15:39 - [ 3] for our analysis. ACS/HRC F555W and F814W Observations: 2 orbits. By virtue of their very high spatial resolution (a factor two compared to NICMOS and WFPC2), the ACS observations will allow us 1) to quantify the broadening introduced in the H-band brightness profile by the NICMOS PSF; 2) to resolve the nuclear stellar population into individual stars and to assess the bias introduced by population gradients in the H-band mass-to- light ratio. Because of its superior resolution and red sensitivity, ACS/HRC is the instrument of choice for this study. The Instrument Manual advertises a PSF FWHM of 0\Sec034 (for dithered data, we will discuss the specific dithering pattern with the ACS instrument scientists), a factor 2 to 3 higher than can be achieved with WFPC2. The stellar population at r > 1\sec from the center of NGC205 can already be resolved using archival WFPC2 V (F555W) and I (F814W) images (Fig. 4), therefore we propose to use the same filters (F555W and F814W) with ACS to extend the CMD possibly as far into the nucleus as 0\Sec1. The use of the same filters for ACS as the ones used for the existing WFPC2 images will allow us to calibrate the ACS photometry using secondary standards identified in both fields. To match the depth of the CMD derived from the WFPC2 images (Fig. 4), we need S/N~ 3 for a V=25, I=24 point source. Assuming (rather conservatively) that half of the stars are unresolved at r=0\Sec2 from the center, we expect a stellar background of surface brightness V ~ 15.75, I ~ 14.25 at this radius (assuming an elliptical galaxy spectrum and using the surface brightness profile shown in Fig. 2). In these conditions, S/N=3 will be achieved in 2500s for a V=25 mag point source. The same exposure time will give S/N=2 for I=24, which is acceptable for our purposes. At least four dithered exposures will be necessary to properly remove CCD defects and improve the spatial resolution. For each 54m visibility period, overhead time will be 6m for guide star (re)- acquisition, 0.33m for each move within the dithering patter, and 2.5m for the first science exposure (1m for each subsequent one). If four exposures are taken per orbit, the total time left for science observations will be 2490s, which fulfills our requirements. We therefore ask for two orbits of ACS time, one in each filter. Notice that the nucleus, assuming an r^-1 surface brightness profile, will not be saturated in any of the images.
