Abstract We have compiled a sample of 9 spatially resolved binary brown dwarfs (18 objects), and now propose ACS imaging and STIS spectroscopic follow-up observations. While theoretical models on the interplay of chemical and physical processes governing brown dwarf atmospheres have reached a high level of sophistication, interpretation of observational data remains difficult. As brown dwarfs never stabilize themselves on the hydrogen main sequence, there is always an ambiguity between the temperature or luminosity of any brown dwarf and its mass or age. The individual components of brown dwarf binaries, however, are expected to be coeval and have the same underlying chemical composition. This provides crucial constraints on any model, thus greatly reducing the number of the free parameters. The aim is to obtain photometric and spectroscopic data to probe the physical and chemical properties of the brown dwarf atmospheres, as well as second epoch astrometric data to characterize th e orbital motion. The study will provide important feedback on theoretical model atmospheres and evolutionary tracks for brown dwarfs. As such, it will be an important step towards a better understanding of objects with spectral properties intermediate between those of giant planets and late-type stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9451( 15) - 04/20/04 13:16 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ All brown dwarf binaries will first be imaged with ACS/HRC (WFPC2 in case ACS should not be available in Cycle 11) in order to obtain 2nd epoch data, and thus establish their current separation, position angle and rate of orbital motion. The filters SDSS r, SDSS i, and SDSS z will be used to obtain color information on the individual components of each brown dwarf binary system. Observations will be obtained in CR-SPLIT mode in order to facilitate rejection of cosmic rays events, and will consists of pairs of shorter exposures (avoiding saturation of the primary) and longer exposures (aiming at high SNR on the secondary). Expected exposure times are of the order of 20s and 1000s (SDSS r), 10s and 500s (SDSS i), and 4s and 240s (SDSS z). Including overheads for guide star acquisition and instrumental overheads this adds up to 55 min, and should thus easily fit in the average orbital visibility. Once the astrometric data has been obtained and analyzed, the resulting informatio n will be used to update the slit orientation for the STIS spectroscopy. STIS observations could thus commence at the earliest two to three months after the ACS/HRC observations. Standard STIS target acquisition for point sources will suffice to place both components of each binary brown dwarf in the 0.1 arcsec wide slit. STIS spectra will be obtained with G750L (spectral range 524 to 1027 nm, resolving power 530 to 1040) in CR- SPLIT mode. For the secondaries we aim at a SNR of ~25 at 650 nm in order to facilitate a good comparison with the theoretical models. For the average secondary this requires about 4100s. Including overheads this easily fits into two orbits. For the brightest object in our sample (2MASS1426+1557) only one orbit is required. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We request early acquisition observations for all brown dwarf binaries with ACS/HRC in order to obtain 2nd epoch data, and thus establish the current orbital properties (separation, position angle). This is needed to fine-tune the position angle of the entrance slit of STIS. A reduced proprietary period of 3 months is proposed for all observations resulting from these observations. Three months is sufficient for us to assess the data quality and carry out the initial analysis, and at the same time ensures timely access to the data by the general astronomical community.
