Abstract LINERs may be the most common AGNs, and the signposts of accretion onto the massive black holes present in most galaxies. However, the LINER spectrum is the result of UV excitation, and, in at least some LINERs, a nuclear cluster of hot stars, rather than an AGN, dominates the energetics in the UV. Thus, it is still unknown if the UV continuum, or the optical emission lines it excites, have anything to do with an AGN. The demographics and accretion physics of low-luminosity AGNs hinge on this question. We propose to search for variability in a sample of 17 LINERs with compact UV nuclei. Variability can reveal an AGN component in the UV continuum, even when its light is not dominant. We will test systematically the handful of non-definitive reports of UV variability, and potentially quantify the AGN contribution to the UV emission. Variability in all or most objects will be strong evidence that LINERs mark dormant AGNs in most galaxies. Alternatively, a general null detection of variability will suggest that, even in LINERs with additional AGN signatures, the UV continuum is stellar in origin. Contemporaneous monitoring with the VLA/VLBA of 11 objects which have radio cores (five of which we already know are radio-variable) will reveal the relations between UV and radio variations. The UV-variable objects will be targeted for future, better-sampled, monitoring. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9454( 2) - 02/27/02 10:44 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The main objective of this program is to test if and how different kinds of LINERs vary when observed repeatedly at various time separations. We have simulated (Fig. 4) a typical random snapshot sampling pattern that will be obtained for 17 LINERs. The simulation assumes 260 snapshot ``windows'' during the observing cycle (i.e., an average of 5 snapshot scheduling opportunities per week), which the schedulers fill by drawing at random targets from a pool of five snapshot programs, including this one. Non-overlapping circles are separated by >2 weeks. One sees that, based solely on the random snapshot selection, most of the targets will likely be observed 3-6 times at intervals covering a broad range of timescales. As allowed for SNAPs, we will use the BETWEEN special requirement to prevent repeated observations of the same target at short intervals. The snapshot sample consists of 17 galaxies with LINER nuclei for which existing HST UV data show a compact nuclear source. Table 1 lists the targets. In Phase II, each target will be entered six times, producing a pool of 102 snapshots from which schedulers will select targets. The prime science will be done with the ACS/HRC F250W exposure. Previous images of all our targets at 2200 Angstrom\ have shown that at these wavelengths the emission is completely dominated by a point- like nucleus (see Fig. 1). A 5 to 25 min exposure, depending on brightness, in F250W, will reach S/N>= 50 (and typically S/N~ 100) for all the targets, based on the exposure-time calculator. We prefer the F250W over the F220W filter because the latter's red leak, considering the late-type stellar spectrum of the bulges, may result in a high stellar background. Furthermore, building on the experience of WFPC and WFPC2, the shorter wavelengths may be more susceptible to photometric instability. At longer wavelengths, the nuclei gradually become dwarfed by light from stars, to a degree that is not presently known for each galaxy. However, a consecutive 5- min F330W exposure will, at little extra cost, potentially provide information on color changes. Exposures will be CR-SPLIT to allow subsequent cosmic-ray removal. Overheads will consist of guide-star acquisition (6 min) initial filter/ filter change (2 min), and four readounts (4 min). With 5 min exposure time in F330W and 5 to 25 min exposure time in F250W (depending on object brightness) the total visit time per snapshot will be 22-42 min. Requested guiding mode is Fine Lock.
