Abstract We propose to correlate the X-ray variability of the M87 jet against morphological changes and variability seen in high resolution HST optical/UV observations. We have already been granted Chandra bi-monthly monitoring between Nov. 2001 and Aug. 2002, as well as HST observations in Nov. 2001. Here we propose for a second HST epoch in Aug. 2002 which will allow measurement of optical/UV variability and morphological changes during the Chandra run. These observations will elucidate the X-ray emission mechanism for the jet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9461( 2) - 02/14/02 07:53 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain STIS NUV/F25QTZ image of the jet using a single orbit. The superluminal knots in region HST-1 which have estimated fluxes 2 * 10^-18 erg cm^-2 s^-1 AA^-1 at 3000Angstrom\ (assuming a nu^-1 spectrum found in nearby knots) will have SNR=24 in 2400 sec. Sub-exposures will be dithered to improve PSF sampling by the 0.024" pixels and minimize detector artifacts. There should be no bright object issues for the M87 nucleus or jet. WFPC2 images will be obtained in F300W, F450W, F606W, and F814W with PC1 to provide spectral coverage throughout the optical band. We have chosen WFPC2 instead of ACS, so as to better match the spectral coverage and plate scale of the WFPC2 observation already scheduled in Nov. 2001. The Chandra observations have already been scheduled. These will utilize the ACIS-S3 chip and are 5 ksec each, scheduled at 2 month intervals during AO3. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We request that the observation be scheduled in August 2002 near the time of our last Chandra AO3 observation.
