Abstract The study of distant cluster galaxies requires two key ingredients: (1) deep high- resolution imaging, to constrain galaxy structure; and (2) 8m-class spectroscopy, to measure stellar content, star-formation rates, dynamics, and cluster membership. We will reach both conditions with the addition of HST/ACS imaging to our suite of VLT (36 nights) and NTT (20 nights) observations of 10 confirmed clusters at z~0.8, drawn from the ESO Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS). The proposed HST/ACS data will complement our existing optical/IR imaging and spectroscopy with quantitative measures of cluster galaxy morphologies (i.e. sizes and shapes, bulge-disk decompositions, asymmetry parameters), and with measurements of cluster masses via weak lensing. Major advantages unique to the EDisCS project include: (i) uniform selection of clusters; (ii) large enough sample sizes to characterize the substantial cluster-to-cluster variation in galaxy populations; (iii) large quantities of high quality data from 8m telescopes; (iv) uniform measurements of morphologies, spectroscopic and photometric redshifts, SEDs, star- formation/AGN activities, and internal kinematics; (v) optical selection of clusters to complement the X-ray selection of almost all high-z clusters in the ACS GTO programs; (vi) forefront numerical simulations designed specifically to allow physical interpretation of observed differences between the high-z and local clusters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9476( 13) - 08/04/03 09:24 - [ 3] Observations Description ------------------------ Our specific ACS observing strategy is designed to balance several goals: (1) to measure structural parameters and morphologies over the area where we will have 8m broadband imaging and spectroscopy; (2) to reach sufficient depth to make reliable detections of S0 disks and to measure structural parameters for cluster galaxies and shape parameters for background lensed galaxies; (3) to optimize comparisons with existing z~0.4 HST observations. FILTER SELECTION: We will compare the proposed sample at z~0.8 to lower redshift clusters (z~0.4) already available in the HST archives and z~0 clusters from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. To sample similar rest-frame wavelengths, we require a very red filter for the high-redshift observations. Our options include F814W and F850LP. Although the background will be lower in F850LP, F814W provides higher throughput. The latter effect dominates, leading to required exposure times with F814W that are about half that with F850LP. Therefore, we propose to use the F814W filter, which is a close match to rest-frame B. REQUIRED DEPTH AND TARGET COVERAGE: The EDisCS clusters have been observed photometrically and spectroscopically using FORS2 (FOcal Reducer/low dispersion Spectrograph) on the VLT. It is possible to cover the 6.5'x6.5' extent of the ground-based imaging data with four pointings of the smaller 3.4'x3.4' field of view of the ACS/WFC. Balancing scientific motives for going deep over the entire area where we have groundbased data against a limited number of available orbits, we propose to tile the FORS2 field in four pointings, with one additional deep central pointing. For the four shallow pointings, we will follow the example of van Dokkum et al. (1999), who demonstrated that 108 minutes with WFPC2 is sufficient for detecting mergers, and morphologically classifying ellipticals and star-forming disk galaxies in MS 1054-03, a cluster at z = 0.83. Accounting for the increased sensitivity of the ACS, and the appropriate overheads, we will exceed that depth in one orbit per pointing. The resulting depth will allow us to classify mergers and measure galaxies' structural parameters. However, based upon independent exposure time calculations for redshifted model spirals, this depth will probably not allow us to to trace faint disks beyond one or two scale lengths (hampering separating S0's from ellipticals) or to detect faint galaxies that are not undergoing somewhat enhanced star formation. The deep central pointing will probe to lower surface brightnesses, fainter magnitudes, and larger galactic radii in the region of the cluster containing the most galaxies. We aim for a depth comparable to the z~0.4 comparison samples. To calculate the required exposure times, we scale from the MORPHS collaboration, which has observed several intermediate redshift clusters with WFPC2. They used an exposure time of roughly 283 minutes for clusters at z ~ 0.5. This exposure time allowed for reliable morphological classification down to I_814 ~ 23.0, which corresponds to M_V ~ -19. The ACS is a factor of 4.5 more sensitive than WFPC2 in the F814W filter. However, because our targets are at a higher redshift, we need to consider the effects of both k-corrections and cosmological surface brightness dimming. The k-correction between z = 0.55 and z = 0.8 depends on galaxy type, but is negligible for late type spirals in F814W. Although the k-correction for ellipticals is much larger, the ellipticals are sufficiently high surface brightness that they will be more easily detected than spiral disks. Cosmological dimming will lead the surface brightnesses of cluster galaxies to decrease by 0.65 magnitudes per square arcsecond between z=0.55 and z=0.8. Adopting the conservative assumption that Poisson noise from the background counts dominates that of the source counts, 9476( 13) - 08/04/03 09:24 - [ 4] surface brightness dimming requires us to increase the exposure time by a factor of 3.3. Therefore, to do as well at z ~0.8 with ACS as MORPHS did with WFPC2 at z ~ 0.55, we require exposure times of 283 minutes * 3.3 / 4.5, or 208 minutes. Allowing for typical overheads, this can be reached in 5 orbits. We have also verified the above exposure times using independent calculations of limiting surface brightnesses for redshifted spirals and ellipticals. ORBIT TALLY: For each of our z ~ 0.8, clusters, we propose four tiled one-orbit pointings and one central pointing of four additional orbits. This will bring the total effective exposure time up to 5 orbits in the central regions of the cluster. We are requesting eight orbits per cluster, for a total of 80 orbits for 10 clusters. Each of the four single-orbit tilings will be placed in individual visits. In order to minimize our need for limited SAA-free time, we are dividing our four central pointings into 2 visits. The grand total for all 10 clusters is 60 visits. DITHERING STRATEGY: For the four 1-orbit tilings, we will use the default 2-point DITHER-LINE pattern defined for the WFC. This will allow us to remove detector artifacts while spanning the 50 pixel interchip gap. Spanning the interchip gap aids in mass reconstruction from lensing, because the shape of the observed area enters into the analysis. Additionally, a large shift will aid in the creation of distortion maps, which must be highly accurate for lensing studies. Each pointing will be CR-SPLIT, to aid in the removal of cosmic rays, for a total of four exposures per orbit. Each of these four exposures should have a sky noise that is ~3.7 times the read noise, assuming parameters for the background that mimic those expected under LOW-SKY conditions. For the central pointings, we will use a 2-point dithering pattern that utilizes small sub-pixel shifts (pattern 12 in ISR ACS 2001-7), for the purpose of increasing resolution. Further dithering will take place between each orbit in order to ensure that the interchip gap does not fall on the same part of the sky for more than one orbit. In order to accomplish this, we are using the default WFC DITHER-LINE pattern with pattern 12 from the ISR ACS 2001-7 as the secondary pattern. FLUX DETERMINATION: Because we are observing a high redshift galaxy cluster, we have opted to follow the example for point sources provided in the Phase 2 Instructions, rather than that for extended sources. Based on our groundbased V and I band imaging, our target galaxies have apparent I-band magnitudes from 18-26 and V-I colors spread around 1.5. Our SExtractor catalogs reveal that the brightest star in any of the cluster fields has an apparent I band magnitutude of 12. Real Time Justification ----------------------- LOW-SKY: To cover the area over which we will have groundbased observations in a plausible number of orbits, we were forced to accept a shallower exposure time outside of the center of the cluster than would be optimal for several scientific goals. This shortfall will be a major impediment to deriving weak lensing maps of the cluster mass at large radii (>1-2 Mpc), because the construction of the maps depend upon measuring slight changes in elongation of heavily surface brightness dimmed blue background galaxies. Given the uncertainties in using optical richness, X-ray brightness, or even velocity dispersions as a stand-in for the mass of potentially non-virialized clusters, lensing measurements are extremely important. For these reasons, we are requesting the LOW SKY option. Observations of high redshift cluster galaxies are surface brightness limited, and thus the reduced background with the LOW SKY option dramatically increases the limiting isophotal radius of individual 9476( 13) - 08/04/03 09:24 - [ 5] galaxies, even after including the reduced usable fraction of an orbit. ORIENT: As already stated, one of the strengths of our program is the wealth of high quality groundbased photometry and spectroscopy from 8-m telscopes. In order to obtain structural parameters for all the galaxies for which we will have stellar content, star-formation rates, and dynamics, it is necessary to tile our WFC observations over a 6.5'x6.5' field of view. In order to have the separate tiles be contiguous over this field of view, some overlap is required. This constrains the acceptable values of ORIENT to a range of 4 degrees. We have experimented with angles around 90, 0, 180, and 270 degrees. The latter 3 values proved to be unschedulable for our targets. For values of ORIENT near 90 degrees, we maintain reasonable schedulability while meeting our scientific requirements. For the 4-orbit/2-visit deeper central pointings, we require that the second visit be performed at the same value of ORIENT as the first.
