Abstract The investigation of the Wind Momentum-Luminosity Relationship (WLR) of blue supergiant stars as an independent extragalactic distance indicator has reached a critical phase. Following our recent discovery and spectroscopic follow-up of several tens of stars outside of the Local Group in NGC 300 and NGC 3621, we can now calibrate the WLR in terms of spectral subtype and metallicity with a higher accuracy than hithertho possible with the statistically limited samples available in the nearby galaxies studied so far. This, however, requires high-resolution imaging to obtain accurate BVI photometry of a significant fraction of those stars for which we have spectroscopic information. This can be effectively accomplished with eight ACS/WFC fields in these two galaxies. As a further step, we can use the calibrated WLR to measure the first independent extragalactic distance. We then propose additional imaging of six ACS/WFC fields in M101 to select blue supergiant candidates for spectroscopic follow-up. Having recently discovered more than a hundred new Cepheids in NGC 300, the high-resolution imaging proposed for the photometry of blue supergiants can also be used, with no additional observing effort, to verify the effects of blending on the Cepheid distance to this galaxy, an important calibrator of secondary distance indicators. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9492( 5) - 03/12/02 08:30 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Basic requirements: We require images with the ACS/WFC and the following three filters: F435W (Johnson B), F555W (Johnson V ) and F814W (broad I ). This a minimum requirement for determining, besides the stellar brightness, also a sampling of the stellar flux distribution at three different wavelengths necessary to measure a reliable reddening value. All target galaxies are very extended objects when compared to the WFC field of view. In the two galaxies with available VLT spectra (NGC 300 and NGC 3621), the number and position of the selected fields are chosen in order to maximize the coverage of blue supergiants with excellent spectra and, in the case of NGC 300, of the Cepheids. These fields well map the radial extent of the supergiant distribution. A typical ACS/WFC field in NGC 300 will contain 5 blue supergiants and 5 Cepheids. Fewer spectra were obtained in the more distant and harder to resolve NGC 3621, and the number of blue supergiants is therefore lower. In M101 we plan to carry out a 10 x 6 arcmin mosaic (6 WFC fields) which will provide good radial coverage for a significant portion of the galaxy. The size of the mapped area and the estimated number of blue supergiant candidates within this region, in the order of 50, are optimal for spectroscopic follow-up with multiobject spectrographs at 10m-class telescopes (e.g. Keck/LRIS). Computation of the number of orbits: The mean magnitude of our targets in NGC 300 is V = 20, with the faintest targets at V = 21.5. However, our Cepheids have typical mean magnitudes approximately one magnitude fainter, V = 22.5. This is the same magnitude level of the faintest blue supergiants for which we need photometry in NGC 3621 and M101 (corresponding to absolute magnitude M_V = -7, both galaxies being roughly at the same distance). Therefore the following considerations apply equally well to all fields in the three target galaxies. With the ACS Exposure Time Calculator we obtain the following integration times required to reach down to V = 22.5, with S/N = 100 for a late B supergiant spectrum: 840 s in B, 870 s in V and 1040 s in I. Given the buffering limitations of the ACS/WFC (6 min overhead for exposures shorter than ~6 min), these exposure times can be slightly rounded up to 1080 s, and thus divided into 3 x 6 min exposures per filter, which nicely removes the buffering overhead, thus increasing the observing efficiency. An appropriate dithering pattern of 3 exposures will effectively remove cosmic rays hits. Photometric accuracy and PSF sampling will also be improved by this technique, as explained in the ACS Handbook. Using gain > 1 even the brightest star in the sample ( V = 18.5) will not exceed the CCDs full-well capacity. By dividing up the exposure times in this way, we can complete one ACS/WFC field in two orbits (the visibility period of our targets varies between 53 and 57 min). In the first orbit, we acquire the guide star (6.1 min), and execute 3 dithered B exposures (3 x 6 = 18 min), with overheads of 4 min for the first exposure (setup and read- out) and 2 x 2.5 min for the subsequent two read-outs. The total time in B, accounting for 3 x 0.5 min for dithering, is 34.6 minutes. Next we take 2 V frames: 2 x 6 min for the science exposures, and 4+2.5 min for the setup and read-out overheads, and an additional 0.5 min for the dithering, totalling 19 minutes for the 2 V exposures. The overall time is 53.6 minutes, which efficiently fills the visibility period of the first orbit. In the second orbit we re-acquire the guide star (5.7 min) and take the last V exposure (6 min+2.5 min overhead), for a total of 14.2 minutes. The remaining time in the visibility period is used for the 3 I frames (28.5 min, as for the B frames), leaving us at least 8-10 minutes for a fourth exposure in one of the 3 filters for increased S/N. In the M101 fields, the time remaining will be used for Halpha narrow-band imaging, of sufficient S/N to be useful in the target selection for the spectroscopic follow-up to discriminate against targets which are affected by nebular emission. In conclusion, to complete the proposed 14 ACS/WFC fields in the three galaxies we need 28 orbits. When computing the number of orbits required to carry out our program, we also considered the following alternative solutions, but each proved unsatisfactory:-ACS/HRC: although the photometry of crowded stellar populations might take advantage of the higher spatial resolution of the HRC, the much smaller field of view, combined with the extended nature of our target distributions, prevents us to carry out our program in a reasonable amount of time. The survey in M101 would also be unpractical.- WFPC2: while the smaller field of view of this camera could be compensated by a larger number of orbits, both the spatial resolution and the BVI throughput are considerably worse than with the ACS/WFC.
