Abstract The 3CR Snapshot Imaging Survey that we have undertaken has revealed the existence of spectacular sub-arcsecond emission- line disks in three FR II radio galaxies : 3C 109, 3C 184.1, and 3C 382. They span a redshift range of 0.06 < z < 0.31, have diameters of 3-15 kpc, and have nearly orthogonal disk and radio jet axes. We propose to measure the black hole (BH) masses in these three galaxies with STIS/G750M and test whether the masses correlate more tightly with the optical bulge luminosity, the radio luminosity, or the nuclear velocity dispersion. These will represent the first mass determinations of BHs in FR II galaxies. For 3C 184.1 and 3C 382, the radio M_BH-L_5_GHz correlation predicts BH masses ((11, 8)x10^9 M_sun) that are factors of ~10-55 greater than predicted by the optical M_BH-L_B relation ((0.2, 1)x10^9 M_sun), while for 3C 109, both relations yield a stunning BH mass of ~20x10^9 M_sun. A positive detection of these extreme BH masses would confirm radio luminosity as a sensitive indicator of BH mass and will extend the M_o-Sigma, M_BH- L_B, and M_BH-L_5_GHz relations to unprecedentedly large BH masses. Additionally, line and continuum diagnostics will be performed over 2900-10300 Ang to determine the physics of the disks (shocks vs. photoionization). This study will help constrain any evolutionary sequence between the BH masses and disks of the two FR types. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9495( 6) - 05/24/02 12:54 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The scientific goals of this project can be met with 5 orbits per target for a total of 15 orbits : 1. High-Resolution Spectroscopy : Disk Kinematics and BH Masses The kinematic measurements will be performed in 4 orbits/target with the G750M grating at three contiguous, parallel slit positions along the disks' major axis : 2 orbits on the nucleus with a 52X0.1 slit and 1 orbit each at two flanking positions offset by one slit width and using a 52X0.2 slit to account for the decreasing line surface brightness away from the major axis. The ionized gas kinematics will be studied with the H_Alpha+N II emission lines, the brightest optical emission lines in our galaxies. We will observe the emission lines with STIS and the G750M grating (0.56 Angstrom/pixel) at tilts of lambda_cen=8561, 7283, 6768 Ang for 3C 109, 3C 184.1, and 3C 382, respectively. This covers the H_Alpha+N II lines for all galaxies, and includes the (redshifted) S II lines for 3C 109 and 3C 184.1. The spectral resolution of the G750M grating is 2 pixels or 1.12 Angstrom, which corresponds to a velocity resolution of 40-48 km/sec at redshifted H_Alpha for our three targets, fully sufficient for studies of disk kinematics. In orbit 1, the 52X0.1 slit is centered on the nucleus and the orbit is divided into three exposures (CR- SPLIT=3) to remove the majority of the cosmic ray hits. Orbit 2 is identical to orbit 1 except for an offset of 4.5 pixels along the slit to correct for hot pixels and any remaining cosmic ray hits and also to improve the spatial resolution. In orbit 3, the 52X0.2 slit is offset from the nucleus by 0.15" and a total of four exposures are acquired with a two-point dither pattern along the slit (separation of 4.5 pix and CR-SPLIT=2 at each position). Orbit 4 is identical to orbit 3 except that the slit is offset from the nucleus in the opposite direction. Simulations with the STIS Exposure Time Calculator (ETC) indicate that H_Alpha does not saturate in any of the CR-SPLIT exposures. The G750M spectra are binned along the wavelength axis to reduce read noise. Since the redshifted H_Alpha complex is located in a heavily fringed region of the CCD, a contemporaneous fringe flat field is acquired in occultation at the end of each orbit. 2. Low-Resolution Spectroscopy: Physics of the Emission-line Gas The G430L (2.73 Angstrom/pixel, 2900-5700 Angstrom) and G750L (4.92 Angstrom/pixel, 5240-10270 Angstrom) gratings, coupled with a 52X0.2 slit, will be used to determine the ionization parameters of the emission-line gas of the disks in 1 orbit/target. This slit size represents a good compromise between throughput and spatial and spectral resolution. For both 3C 109 and 3C 184.1, the H_Beta to H_Alpha region falls in the G750L range while for 3C 382, H_Beta is located in the G430L span. For each target, orbit 5 is equally divided between the G430L and G750L spectra. Again, a two-point dither pattern is used for each grating with a CR-SPLIT=2. The spectra are binned by 2 pixels in the spatial direction and also by 2 pixels along the wavelength dispersion of G430L. A fringe flat field is obtained in G750L at the end of the orbit.
