9500( 18) - 09/03/02 11:18 - [ 1] PROPOSAL FOR HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE OBSERVATIONS ST ScI Use Only ID: 9500 Version: 18 Check-in Date: 03-Sep-2002 11:14:14 1.Proposal Title: The Evolution of Galaxy Structure from 10, 000 Galaxies with 0.1100 AGNs identified in the field, we will investigate whether the population of host galaxies evolved in the last 10^10 years. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9500( 18) - 09/03/02 11:18 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The goal of the proposed observations is to obtain k- corrected structural parameters for nearly all galaxies with redshifts, i.e. to m_R~ 24, across the 30'* 30' E-CDFS. noi Sample Size: The need for ~ 10, 000 galaxies within 0.25Sigma discrimination between pure exponential disks, pure R^1/4$ down to the sample limit, along with the ability to discriminate a bulge-disk system of unequal size, e.g. R_eff, bulge<0.5R_exp, disk, from a pure exponential or pure R^1/4-law. To estimate exposure times, we have performed image simulations (see Figure 1 and 4) to verify what to expect in the ACS images for the COMBO-17 sample galaxies with redshifts (m_r<24). We used the actual positions and magnitudes of the galaxies from COMBO-17, assigned exponential disks to the blue galaxies and R^1/4 profiles to the red galaxies. The sizes were ``invented'', drawing from published mean luminosity size relations (Simard Etal 1999); the flattennings from nearby distribution and the position angles were drawn at random. The system efficiency and the background levels (``average'') were taken from the ACS handbook. We then performed disk, bulge discrimination, size and flattening estimates with our GALFIT algorithm, accounting rigorously for the PSF and the noise (see Figure 4 for an example). From these image simulations we found that we need t_exp~ 45 minutes, or a one-orbit integration (dithered, with 3 CR- splits) to achieve sufficient S/N for Delta R/R~ 0.2 even for quite extended objects at the sample limit. Similarly, fitting the simulated images with GALFIT showed that with the proposed set-up and exposure times we can discriminate an exponential disk from an R^1/4-law with >99\ For galaxies with blue SEDīs, where the morphological k-corrections may be the largest, we found the t_exp requirements for the needed S/N requirements in V and z to be similar. The actual ACS data will differ from our simulations through their spatially varying PSFs and the ubiquitous field distortion. In addition to TinyTim PSFs we will also construct emipirical PSFs from the numerous stars throughout the 76 ACS tiles. Our GALFIT software is also set up to use complex transformation from model positions to pixel space and can hence fit even images with pervasive scale distortions. noi Total Orbit Request: Taken together, these boundary conditions imply 1 orbit/filter/pointing * 2 filters * 76 pointings =152 orbits. At a survey rate of >60 galaxies with redshifts (in two colors) per orbit, this survey may still demand substantive amounts of telescope time, but it is highly efficient.
