Abstract Now, for the first time, we can probe the duration of nuclear activity and its duty cycle and the relationship between the growth of the bulge (via a starburst) and the growth of the BH (via fueling the AGN). We have identified a class of powerful radio galaxy which displays both an outer `older' radio source as well as an inner `younger' radio source. These `double- doubles' are sources in which the current radio source is propagating outwards through the relic of the previous epoch of activity. In 3C 236 we found that repeated episodes of star formation and radio ejection were indeed temporally linked. We propose to obtain images of the host galaxies of 4 additional double-double radio galaxies in the NUV with STIS and the R band with ACS/HRC. The proposed HST observations will allow us to determine the existence of young star forming regions in these double-double sources. Follow up imaging and spectroscopy combined with our detailed radio imaging, will allow us to use the double-doubles to address critical questions concerning probe the relationship between star formation and AGN fueling, e.g., - Over what time scales do these processes occur ? -- are they short and intense or long and gradual ? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9501( 7) - 05/06/03 14:39 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain images of each of our 4 target galaxies using the STIS/NUV-MAMA, together with rest from U band (just blue- ward of the 4000Angstrom\ break) using the ACS/HRC. The STIS/NUV-MAMA observations are intended to provide sensitive indications of very young stellar populations (<=sssim 10^7 yr); we will use the F25QTZ long pass filter since this filter provides a wide bandpass across the NUV and provides better geocoronal line rejection than the F25SRF2. The STIS NUV-MAMA with F25QTZ also provides better S/N for our targets than the ACS/HRC with F220W. We have split the ACS/HRC and MAMA observations into separate orbits to allow the most efficient scheduling. Using the ACS/HRC we will obtain an image around rest-frame U-band for each object to provide a high resolution comparison with the NUV image and allow us to unambiguously identify the presence of blue knots due to young stars. We have chosen the rest frame U band as the comparison with the NUV (rather than a redder filter) because (1) the U-band provides stronger contrast between a blue population and the older red population which makes up the bulk of the galaxy, and (2) the filter is ideally placed for our follow up observations since a subsequent observation just red-ward of the 4000Angstrom\ break provides an important diagnostic of star burst age. We have calculated the spectrum of both continuous star formation as well as instantaneous star bursts at ages of 10^7 and 10^8 yr using the Starburst99 code (Leitherer etal 1999). We have normalized the brightness of the models to that of the blue knots in 3C236 (m_UV ~eq 24 at z ~ 0.1). For each source we re-scale the models to the appropriate redshift. We should detect knots similar to those in 3C236 in all 4 sources with the requested exposure time. We will need one orbit each for the MAMA and ACS/HRC observations for the three lower redshift objects and two orbits each for the MAMA and ACS/HRC observations for the z~eq 0.249 object. Thus, the total request is for 10 orbits. begintable*t. captionSome properties of the DDRGs we propose to observe. Columns 2 and 3 give the RA and DEC of the radio core in J2000; Column 4 gives the redshift; columns 5 and 6 give the size of the outer and inner structures, respectively. sectionWhy Do We Need HST? For this project we need both the high angular resolution and the UV sensitivity of HST. The STIS observations of 3C 236 show that the star forming knots are located about ~ 0arcs5 (800 pc) from the nucleus and are resolved with sizes ~ 0arcs3 (500 pc). Clearly these structures can only be resolved reliably with HST. Although a WFPC2 F702W image of 3C 236 was obtained and published, it was not until the STIS NUV image was obtained that the very blue knots were identified. Thus, the NUV imaging is critical to the success of this project and can only be accomplished with HST. Real Time Justification ----------------------- No special requirements.
