Abstract We propose a STIS G140L spectroscopic Snapshot program of bright (V<=16.5) AGN not previously observed in the UV to discover new high-column density (N_H >= 10^15 cm^- 2) LyAlpha absorbers in the local Universe (z <= 0.45). Many more of these high column density systems are needed because: (1) They contribute most of the baryons to the local IGM; (2) They include systems for which valuable metallicity and D/H measurements can be made with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS); (3) They include many of the ``warm-hot'' absorbers, thought to be a large baryon reservoir in the local Universe; and (4) They are most likely to be ``associated'' with galaxy halos. Because of their low-z, many of these absorbers can be located relative to galaxies of known redshifts, allowing an immediate scientific return from these snapshots. Perhaps the most important, lasting results of this survey require higher resolution reobservations with COS by our GTO team. Using these snapshots to select the best targets, we will obtain COS R~22, 000 spectra to determine the D/H and metallicity of absorbers in galaxy halos, groups, and voids. We will use pairs and ``constellations'' of AGN to determine absorber sizes, shapes, and covering factors. Candidate ``warm-hot'' absorbers will be reobserved with COS to determine their numbers accurately and to assess their metallicity, sizes, and relationships to galaxies and galaxy groups. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9506( 5) - 06/23/03 08:36 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ SAMPLE DESCRIPTION , Our snapshot sample is drawn primarily from three recent AGN surveys: FIRST, SDSS and the Hamburg surveys. A few objects come from 6DF and the Veron Catalog for AGN not previously observed using IUE (or HST). A few AGN observed but not detected with IUE in the far-UV also will be included. We have limited the total sample to ~140 objects by targeting ~110 bright AGN (V<=16.5) and ~30 fainter AGN (16.5 < V < 17.5) that have not been observed previously at UV wavelengths. Unlike previous snapshot proposals that targeted high-z AGN, to perform He II Gunn-Peterson test experiments or to find high-z pairs or D/H experiments, our interests lie in the lower redshift LyAlpha forest. The targets we have chosen, with 0.1 < z < 0.45, maximize IGM pathlength and are better for reducing the possibility of having the far-UV absorbed by higher z Lyman limit systems or for misidentifications of higher-z Lyman series lines as low-z LyAlpha. Our restriction of the AGN redshift range to 0.1<= z <=0.45 ensures that the AGN LyAlpha emission line is observable before the longward end (1760 Angstrom) of the COS far-UV gratings, while still maximizing discovery pathlengths. In addition, we have restricted the FIRST survey objects by color to maximize the likelihood that these objects have sufficient UV flux. Because FIRST is a radio- selected sample of bright AGN, it contains some highly reddened objects. We have selected only the bluest of those sources (O-E <=1.0). Thanks to the excellent work by these AGN surveyors, there are >200 new, bright AGN, from which we selected ~110. We include ~30 AGN fainter than V=16.5, but brighter than V=17.5, to include a few close pairs and triples to do the absorber size test with COS. We chose a few coincidences with foreground galaxies in the CfA redshift survey to probe galaxy halos. While the G140L spectra for these objects will not be quite sufficient over the full redshift pathlength to obtain a limiting EW=0.6Angstrom, these data will still be adequate to measure continuum flux and thUSenable USto select the best candidate pairs and triples, as well as the best foreground galaxy probes to observe with COS. An example of this type of target is Q1652+395, which is 17' away from MRK501. The IUE spectrum of Q1652+395 did not detect this object, so an HST snapshot will determine if this pair is an important target for COS. We have already identified a potential ``constellation'' of 4 bright AGN in the south, with separations of 11-30', that could be ideal for this work if they have substantial far-UV flux. These snapshot observations could return substantial science on these objects if a high column density absorber is detected at a common redshift between them. , BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF OBSERVATIONS , Snapshots are an ideal technique for this program. Using the G140L grating on STIS we can obtain adequate S/N in just a few minutes time, requiring a total setup plUSintegration time of 15-25 minutes per target. For example, using the G140L with the 52'' * 0.2'' slit on a V=16.5 AGN at z=0.35 with a standard AGN spectrum (F_1400 = 3.5 * 10^-15 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 AA^-1) requires 7 min to obtain S/N=8 at 1500 Angstrom. Higher redshift objects require slightly longer integration times, not because their flux is less, but because the DQE of the grating + detector is declining redward of 1500 Angstrom. The slightly fainter AGN we will target for the pairs and foreground galaxy work will require 15-20 min of integration and will attain the above EW limit for only a portion of the 1200-1500 Angstrom\ wavelength range. In either case, we estimate 6 min to setup the instrument and acquire the target, for a total of 15-30 min of total telescope time per object. According to the histograms of successful snapshot observations displayed in Soderblom et al.\ (2001), these time constraints 9506( 5) - 06/23/03 08:36 - [ 3] place these observations within the time range for the most often obtained snaps. We will utilize the new (in Cycle 11) SNAP capability of ranking our targets by listing our best examples of pairs and ``constellations'' of AGN as ``high'', our best foreground galaxy probes as ``high'' (approximately half the total in each case), the single, bright AGN which fall in the SDSS sky region as ``medium'', and the other bright AGN as ``low''.
