Abstract We propose deep observations of two X-ray-bright jets newly discovered in our A02 Survey, both with optical counterparts in our HST images. The targets were selected because of their interesting physical properties. Our goals are to obtain high- quality x-ray and optical images to study the jet morphologies and determine the x- ray and optical spectra. Both the morphologies and spectra will test the origin of x-rays, whether they are from inverse Compton on microwave background phtons vs direct synchrotron emission, allowing us to determine the jet physical parameters (Lorentz factors, particle distributions, and beaming) at different locations in the jet. This has important implications on the modes of energy transport and dissipation in relativistic jets. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9682( 4) - 09/19/02 11:05 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our AO2 HST survey was performed with STIS in CLEAR mode and exposures of 1 orbit per target, with no spectral information. Both 1136--135 and 1150+497 exhibit an optical counterpart to the jet. Here we aim at three observations in three filters for each target to constrain the optical spectrum. The selected instrument is the ACS because of its larger observing efficiency, with the WFC camera and the filters F475W (SDSS g), F625W (SDSS r), and F814W (Broad I). The total energy band spanned by the three filters is plotted in Figure 2. As the predicted optical slopes are quite steep, at least three filters are necessary to constrain the optical continuum. The exposure times were calculated using the exposure time calculator (ETC), assuming the optical slopes and fluxes predicted by our models in the three bands for each knot (Table 2). We calculated the exposures necessary to obtain a signal-to-noise ratio per pixel of 3. This gives total exposures of 1 orbit for 1136--135, which has the brightest optical knots, and 2 orbits for 1150+497 which is weaker.
