Abstract By virtue of their extreme properties, NLS1s have given us crucial leverage on the key physical parameters underlying the AGN phenomenon. There is also suggestive evidence of super-solar abundance in some NLS1s, possibly as a result of rapid nuclear star formation in the early/rejuvenated phase of galaxy evolution. The goal of this proposal is to measure accurately the metallicity in a NLS1 with high resolution X-ray and UV spectroscopy. Observations of elements with multiple ionization states in the X-ray band, and abundance sensitive lithium-like nitrogen (NV) in the UV allow accurate determination of ionization parameter, and thus metallicity. This is not only important for understanding the NLS1 phenomenon, but also for investigating evolutionary aspects of AGNS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9687( 2) - 08/29/02 11:20 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This is a joint Chandra-HST program. In the HST phases we will acquire four UV spectra of the NLS1 Mrk 1044 using the STIS FUV MAMA and the 52x0.2 slit. After acquisition for the visit, two G140L spectra will be acquired to cover the entire Far-UV spectral range (1150-1730A) at low dispersion, filling the time in orbit 1. This spectrum will be used to tie together all of the subsequent medium-dispersion spectra and provide good spectrophotometry of faint emission lines. The remaining 4 orbits are devoted to acquirign three sets of medium- resolution G140M spectra centered on the Ly-alpha, NV 1240, and CIV 1548, 1551 doublet. All use primary settings. Two orbits will be used for the weaker NV line, and 1 orbit each is required for the stronger Ly-alpha and CIV lines, completing the 5 orbits of time allocated to this program. Expected count rates based on archival IUE spectra are all well within the safety margins of the FUV MAMA detector. Spectra are taken 2 per orbit, with a slight dither offset along the slit of 2.5-arcsec to allow for better rejection of bad pixels and other artifacts. Real Time Justification ----------------------- none Calibration Justification ------------------------- none Additional Comments ------------------- This program is a joint Chandra-HST observation of Mark 1044. NLS1s are know to be rapidly variable X-ray sources but are less variable at UV and optical wavelengths.
