Abstract We propose a deep X-ray/UV spectroscopy campaign on the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy MRK 279, using Chandra LETGS, HST/STIS, and FUSE. Our main scientific goal is to study the AGN outflow seen as an ionized absorber in this galaxy, focusing on the crucial connection between the X-ray and UV manifestations of the outflows. We will map the ionization and velocity structure, measure the elemental abundances and then determine the mass and kinetic luminosity flux of the outflow- all stepping stones for studying the importance of outflows in the evolution of AGN and their host galaxies. In addition we will use the LETGS data to determine the existence of relativistic CNO emission lines in the spectrum. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9688( 2) - 08/27/02 09:27 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain medium-resolution far-UV echelle spectra of Mrk 279 using the STIS FUV-MAMA, grating E140M, and the 0.2X0.2 aperture. Mrk 279 has a mean continuum flux at 1450 A of 5e-14 erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}~A^{-1}. Historical IUE and HST observations show UV flux variability at the tens of percent level. We plan to obtain the required 16 orbits of exposure time in 5 separate visits over a 5-day interval to match our observing periods to SAA-free orbit intervals. To ease scheduling difficulties, we have planned these visits as four 3-orbit visits and one 4-orbit visit. Real Time Justification ----------------------- We propose to coordinate our HST observations with Chandra and with FUSE. This HST proposal is part of a joint Chandra/HST project. The 360 ks Chandra observation will require 4-5 days to execute, so there is wide latitude in overlapping the HST and Chandra observations. The FUSE observations will be proposed for NRA 4, which covers observations starting in April 2003 and overlaps the HST Cycle 11 observing windows for Mrk 279. Since the FUSE Cycle 4 observing period begins later than the availability of Mrk 279 for HST and Chandra, we request that our HST and Chandra observations be scheduled no earlier than April 2003. Mrk 279 lies at a high declination, which makes scheduling with FUSE much easier. The FUSE spectra would cover the 912-1187 Angstrom range, including the O vi and LyBeta absorption lines.
