Abstract We propose to conduct the first of a two-part deep galactic plane survey on one ACIS-I field in Baade's Window, a region of low obscuration near the galactic center. The survey will reach a sensitivity limit of Lx ~ 3x10^30 erg/s for sources in the galactic bulge, and thus provide the first census of accretion powered binaries (cataclysmic variables and quiescent low mass x-ray binaries) as well as millsecond pulsars to constrain the stellar and binary evolution of the bulge vs the populations in globular clusters and the disk. Optical identifications will be made with a coordinated mosaic survey with ACS on HST (B/R/Halpha), to achieve a sensitivity for CVs down to their luminosity function peak at Mv ~9. A later, followup survey would complete the coverage of Baades Window. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9690( 3) - 11/07/02 10:20 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This ACS dataset will involve a 2-by-2 ACS/WFC mosaic of Baade's Window, with an extra field offset from the side of this mosaic and a 6th pointing centered close to the globular cluster NGC 6522. Each pointing will comprise one orbit with the following exposures: 1x180s F625W, 1x340s F625W, 3x340s F658N and 1x340s F435W. The 2-by-2 mosaic is chosen to provide several arcsec of overlap between adjacent pointings. POS-TARGs are used to specify the telescope positions, using the center of the 2-by-2 mosaic as the positional zeropoint. The position of this center was chosen for having a small n_H in Baade's Window and to provide minimal overlap between this ACS field and existing WPPC2 datasets. A general 2-by-2 ACS mosaic with a few percent of overlap has the following pattern: Pos#2 Pos#3 0, 196 193, 211 Pos#1 Pos#4 0, 0 193, 15 where the ordered pairs are pos-targs in arcsec in X and Y. The non-square shape of this pattern is because of the non-square shape of the ACS detector on the sky (this pattern worked well for GO9442). For the Baade's Window mosaic we have defined a position in RA, Dec at the center of the mosaic and then set up pos- targ offsets in X and Y. With a center position of 193/2,(196+15+211)/4 and taking this as the zeropoint, the new pos-targ offsets are: Pos#2 Pos#3-96.5, 90.5 96.5, 105.5 Pos#1 Pos#4-96.5,-105.5 96.5,-90.5 These 4 pointing will take 4 orbits. For the 5th we have chosen a position overlapping to the north of the mosaic (0, 294). The 6th orbit observes NGC 6522 (where we have specified the cluster position with a POS-TARG offset of 20" in the y-direction to offset the chip gap a little more than the default 10" from cluster center). Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Notes: (1) These observations use a POS TARG pattern to perform the 2-by-2 mosaic which takes the target outside of the aperture for 12 of the 36 exposures (130->180; 250->300). Hence 12 feasibility warnings have arisen for this Phase II. We received a similar warning for a 3-by-3 ACS mosaic of Omega Centauri (GO-9442), but in both cases we believe that no true problem has been identified with our POS TARG pattern. 8 of the 9 mosaic pointings worked perfectly for GO-9442, with one failing for as-yet unknown reasons.
